What's Your Memory?: The Ballpark in Arlington

The Ballpark in Arlington, aka Ameriquest Field in Arlington, aka Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, aka Globe Life Park in Arlington, is actually now a former MLB ballpark. Sort of. The Rangers were set to cut the ribbon on their new home, Globe Life Field, this season, but like many planning a sparkling rookie year in 2020, the long trip to the majors has gotten longer, and the dream is on hold. I guess it's appropriate that the naming sponsor on the park is an insurance company.

The ballpark will (allegedly) continue on as a soccer (USL) and football (XFL) facility but ends it's baseball career having yielded a 5-3 record to the Mets, hosting the Amazin's in 2003, 2011, and 2017.

Maybe a history of only eight games makes memories harder to find or maybe it makes them more vivid. I associate the park with Jacob deGrom breaking down in tears after his second straight nightmare start in an otherwise wonderful 2017 season. It's hard to conceive, but replace this start and his one immediately previous against Milwaukee with average outings, and deGrom might be sitting on three straight Cy Young seasons. He somehow rallied from this nadir of mortality and reeled off winning decisions in his next eight starts. Without checking, I'm going to go ahead and declare that to be a career-best streak.

Most of my other TBA memories are not Metly — Jim Morris making his cinematic debut in the person of Dennis Quaid, and Josh Hamilton accidentally killing a guy — but I'm sure you'll remind me of one or two.

The MLB debut of Jose Reyes. An 11-0 Mets romp behind Al Leiter where the Rangers throw up a fringe pitcher in relief to stop the bleeding. A fellow by the name of R.A. Dickey. I think the Mets played in the stadium's inaugural game during the exhibition season.

I'm remembering a TBA exhibition win that possibly featured an Anthony Recker walkoff grand slam. It may or may not have closed out a strong grapefruit season.

Got there once for a game during Texas's Arod era, a non-Met game snuck in during a biz trip. Really hot summer night. I had great seats (few rows behind the 3rd base dugout) and was surrounded by people oblivious to the fact there was a game going on. I think about that when talk comes of netting extensions as any number of dummies including some kids coulda got killed. Long walk from the parking lot to the field. Was the same site as a Six Flags park iirc.

I do recall Jose debuted there.I associate high-scoring games by the Mets and the Rangers when they play

My only memory is driving past it, going from DFW airport to Dallas and thinking "it looks nice".

Went out to run errands on a Saturday afternoon as the Mets played in Arlington in 2011. Mets were at bat. I'd get out of the car, take care of an errand, get back in, the Mets would still be batting. Repeatedly, all in the same inning, which yielded eight runs en route to a 14-5 rout of the Rangers.

One of my better shopping trips.

Got to visit it last summer while on work travel in Dallas. Went with a bunch of coworkers, most of whom were not baseball fans, but were all willing to go along and have beers and soak up some summer weather. It was 90 degrees and we were 4-5 rows from the top of the stadium, but, at least, we were in the shade.

We got there during the top of the first inning and by the time we had reached our seats the Rays had put up an 8 spot or something. Took the lightly populated crowd right out of the game.

Still, a pleasant enough place for baseball. It was "dollar dog" night, so, you gotta like that.

My Mets memories are way more limited. The Reyes debut is about it for me.
