That was such a stupid idea, but since it's still remembered 21 years later, I guess it was successful, in a way.

Nice to hear Bob Murphy again. I had forgotten how he pronounced the days of the week... Mundy, Tuesdy, Wednesdy.

Re: Seven Minutes on Mercury

I think the Turn Ahead the Clock concept was really cool, and some of the uniforms with the oversized logos, or the Diamondbacks with the snake wrapping around the jersey was pretty neat. That's why whole Mercury Mets concept was a huge disappointment to me. They had so much to potentially work with -- a skyline, an apple, the Unisphere, Liberty, bridges, Mr. Met -- and they came up with Mercury Mets? Any team could have done that. I don't know if the team came up with that, or MLB. But someone should have sent that back to the drawing board.

That said, I have a Mercury Mets jersey and cap!

I think they did better than most teams.

Stupid? Sure, but at least they went their own way with it. That's a pretty rare thing.

I never understood the hate for Turn Ahead the Clock Night. It was one night and it was funny. I 'spose it's all part of the long history of the "no fun in baseball crowd."

The uni tops pop up occasionally, if not often, on ebay ... almost always a Piazza Mercury jersey. Caps are rarer, but they're out there. I have a cap and a Piazza Mercury jersey.

I remember going to a Mets flagship store right in front of or very near to the Lipstick Building in 1999, where presumably, Bernie Madoff was ponziing away, and seeing a bunch of Mercury Mets jerseys for sale displayed on a wall instead of on a clothing rack. They were available in several players. I considered buying an Olerud one but in the end, didn't.

It's been so long. I think I got them from a place called "Manny's Baseball Land." It was a mail order place, but they were based in Hobe Sound, Fla. and had an outlet store there. It wasn't far from my parents and I got a lot of things there.

You can see a photo of my cap and jersey in the greatest book ever about Mets uniform numbers!
