Boyz II Men: The 2020 Draft

In what will hopefully be the last MLB draft ever, the Mets pick 19th. And while a lot of rankings and mock drafts diverge mightily at that point, one name that keeps coming bouncing into the picture is Pennsylvania high school outfielder Austin Hendrick. He seeminlgy fits the Mets' recent profile because they've taken advanced high school bats (Jarred Kelenic and Brett Baty) in the first round the last two years. But then they turned around and flipped Kelenic, so what does that even mean? But he's a 19-year-old senior, so he fits their profile.

Anyhow, he's generally listed third among high school hitters in the mockerinos, thanks to a wicked fast swing (see below). Downside is that he's in a good position to demand over-slot value (he'd be eligible to re-enter the draft after only one year of college), and the Mets may be in cost control mode with the team on the block and revenues non-existent.

But look at this rip.

Another name I either keep hearing a lot, or simply heard once but remembered, because it's a cool name, is another prep outfielder, Californian Pete Crow-Armstrong. He's behind Hendrick as a hitter, perhaps, but he's got a strong profile for sticking in center. Wicked fast, athletic, easy movements, and has the old projectible frame that gets the scouts all gooey. Was having a great year at Harvard-Westlake and raising his draft profile before his season got shut down with the pandemic.

Need 20 minutes of talking to a dorky high school jock? You're in luck.

That was on the National Geographic Channel last night.

And it wasn't pretty.

Pre-draft ca-ca I've read said their first two picks are likely to be 6'6" lefty pitchers (one in college, one in high school) with them targeting outfielders later in the draft.

Stay tuned.

Don't get too 'cited about Camper Wrongs-Otter, though. I've got mockers that are seeing him go as high as #7 to the Pirates. Raunchiest Kind has a good chance to be off the board too.

One mocketeer has the Mets grabbing up another outfielder with the pornalicious name of Dillon Diggler. Scouts dig his bat control, and like Dale Murphy or Craig Biggio or Bryce Harper, he combines the disciplined ruggedness for catcher and the athleticism for centerfield, and could end up sticking at either.

The Mets also select at #52 and #69 (compensation for losing Zack Wheelie).

In a strange bit of draft predictions working out, which almost never happens , the Mets have selected California schoolboy outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, who they've been reportedly in love with since last Fall.

Pete is from LA's elite Harvard-Westlake High School so he's all about the hyphens. Both of his parents are Hollywood actors, one a Crow, and the other an Armstrong.

Do the Mets get Timothy Busfield, too?

Molly Knight has a fine profile of Pete Crow-Armstrong in The Athletic. He's a mindful, thoughtful person who thinks about more than baseball--just like another Pete we know:

https://theathletic.com/1865359/2020/06/10/an-mlb-managers-dream-the-promise-and-awakening-of-pete-crow-armstrong/

If you don't subscribe, I've brought a clip:

[BLOCKQUOTE]I ask Crow-Armstrong about how he feels about his big night. “I'm super excited. Me and everybody else in this position have been working our asses off our whole lives for this moment, and it feels right to celebrate,” he says.

He then takes a long, deep breath.

“But at the same time, there are so many more important things happening in the world right now,” he adds. “I find myself trying to make space for the joy in my own personal life that is happening tonight, but tomorrow it's back to what matters. I hope we don't lose the momentum.”[/BLOCKQUOTE]

Re: Boyz II Men: The 2020 Draft

After the pick, one of the ESPN analysts said that Pete doesn't have the hit tool necessary to go far ... yet. That seems to contradict the scouting reports which say he can hit, but not with much power.

I'll insert my annual concern here about high school lefty hitters not having much much experience against lefty pitchers.

CF: That's valid but this Pete was supposed to go earlier. Keith Law, smart guy at The Athletic, had the Mets taking a college SP because his mock guessed that they wouldn't find the bat they wanted still available at 19. A few teams, including Boston, made surprise picks so C-A was still there (Law had him at 12).

Keep in mind also that there's always going to be Some questions hanging over just about everyone, particularly so with high schoolers.

True 'Can't Miss' prospects rarely exist outside of the top five overall picks (often there aren't even that many) and even can't miss prospects can and often do miss.

Re: Boyz II Men: The 2020 Draft

Funny to see the first round include only 29 picks and then realizing ... oh, yeah ...

In the second round, the Mets rolled the dice on Mississippi State's J.T. Ginn. J.T. (who I'm going to assume is named for Justin Timberlake) was a former first rounder (Dodgers, 2018) who instead elected to go the college route. After being the SEC Frosh of the Year, he kicked off his sophomore season by getting knocked out early in the opener and then checking in for Tommy John surgery in March.

As much as the pick was a gamble, taking a guy while his stock was falling, the Mets might have to match the Dodgers' first round $$ in order to see the gamble through.

Re: Boyz II Men: The 2020 Draft

I dont know. If I was him I'd take a long hard look at the idea of getting under contract and rehabbing under the eyes of major League doctors. Will there even be college baseball next spring? And with Tommy John would he even pitch at all? The minor league season if there is one goes several months longer to where he could pitch off a mound in a game in 15 months after surgery. Whats the draft stock look like if nobody has seen him for another year?

In Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Mets see a ‘left-handed magician'

Excerpt:

With the 19th pick Wednesday night, New York snagged center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong out of Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles. The 18-year-old Crow-Armstrong is a defensively gifted athlete with one of the highest ceilings in the draft — and the chance to jump ahead of every other outfielder in the Mets' system.

“All spring, I called him the left-handed magician in center field,” said Tommy Tanous, senior adviser to amateur scouting. “He's one of the rare players you watch in batting practice play defense … He's a fearless center fielder. He's probably the easiest center fielder I've had a chance to scout.”

“The anticipation element to his game is as good as I've seen in a really long time in an amateur center fielder,” said scouting director Marc Tramuta. “There's such a natural glide and ease to what he does in center field. It's just different than everybody else.”

Re: Boyz II Men: The 2020 Draft

Yeah, it's a tough choice, and there's certainly an argument that this may be his last chance to cash his chips in, so he might be advised to jump at slot money.

A fastball with running action and a "wipeout slider" were both described as double-plus offerings before his season ended, and I get the idea that throwing them might be part of why his season ended. My super-advanced biomechanics studies at Outyerhole University tell me he loads a lot of stored energy in his elbow before exploding out to full extension.

Pick 69 Isiah Greene - lefty hitting high school outfielder:

From SNY:
The Mets selected outfielder Isaiah Greene from Corona High school in Corona, California.

Greene, 18, was the No. 62-ranked prospect per MLB.com and has a commitment to Missouri.

A lefty-swinging center fielder who plays plus defense and should be able to stick in center, Greene had a huge senior season and "has a chance to be a really exciting, toolsy player," draft analyst Jon Mayo said on the MLB Network broadcast after Greene was drafted.

MLB.com scouting report snippet:

Even without much polish, Greene really stood out against top competition over the summer and fall. Though he didn't hit as well out of the gate this spring, he may be the most improved player in the area over the last year and there's still plenty of room for growth, giving teams reason to consider the Missouri recruit in the early rounds.

Orze's money pitch is the splitter — a pitch that has been relegated, by health concerns, to a secondary pitch by those who still throw it. And even those guys have slowed it down to use more as a change of pace, much like the traditional forkball.

Orze, though, still lets it fly, Sutter-style. Watch him go, listen to some corporate rock, and enjoy your orzegasm.
