Re: Met it Like Beckham

Former top draft pick, 11 years in the bigs, never became a star, but I suppose useful as a RH hitting infield reserve. Tim Teufel appears 3rd on his list as "similar batters."

Optimistic Mets fan does it again.

Hoping to join a proud contingentt of former #1 overall picks for other teams who eventually became Mets:

I don;t think Beckham was a #1 #1, the White Sox grabbed him with 8th pick, so not bad

I had to go to bbrdotcom and look; I have like zero recollection of Shawon

Dunston's 42 G with the Mets. And I had season tickets in 1999. Scary.

Conflation alert: Gordon Beckham was drafted in the same draft as Tim Beckham who was the 1/1 pick that year.

Both were from Georgia and neither lived up to his potential but the similarities ended there.

Tim was a black HS pick who played the OF; Gordon is white, an IF, and was drafted out of UGa

Played a huge role in GSS game, and for such a short-timer really helped forge the spirit of that '99 group.

Overall #1 pick in '82, four picks ahead of Dwight Gooden.

    Re: Met it Like Beckham

Yeah, he was no longer a SS by that point but still had enough athletic skillz at age 36 to fit in a couple of different places.

And, hell, he hit .344 in 93 ABs over those 42 games. He didn't draw a single walk as a Met but he barely did that during

his entire career anyway so it wasn't like he was going to start then.

    Overall #1 pick in '82 ...

Well, yeah, that's how he got into this discussion: former #1 overalls who became Mets later in their careers, only Edgy conflated his Beckhams so this most recent pick up doesn't actually qualify

even if he does make the squad.

And the Mets totally would have drafted Dunston had they the top pick, they admitted as much themselves. They claimed to have Gooden #2 on their list while obviously other teams didn't but

who knows with that stuff. 90%* of picks are made with the claim that 'This was the guy we really wanted in this slot' when probably about 90% are not.

    * totally made up percentages

Maybe I should start a Prevagen regimen or something.

    Or start smoking pot again.

    I appreciate the de-conflation.

I knew that. And but the Mets didn't pick first. The Cubs did.

    Re: Met it Like Beckham

The guys in between Dunston and Gooden were non-performers. The #2 guy (shortstop Augie Schmidt, Blue Jays) never reached the majors, and the next two guys (pitchers Jimmy Jones, Padres, and Brian Oelkers, Twins) made it, but they were sub-replacement performers. Gooden, despite his early decline, had the best career of all the first rounders, and it wasn't particularly close.

The real prize of that draft, though, went in the second round, #39 overall — an outfielder picked by the Giants.

FWIW, Tim Beckham is ALSO an available free agent at present, as far as we know.
