I've been watching network nightly news programs more in recent weeks in order to catch up on whatever is going on in Covid-land and what I've noticed is that the phrase
'BREAKING NEWS' is attached to just about every story they do even when it's not really 'breaking' (something I've long associated with a story that's happening or still
developing as you're going to air) and often when it's not really news. And it's not confined to just one network because they're all doing the same thing.
- tonight the news of Larry Kramer's death was listed that way (NBC) even though it was at least a half day since it occurred.
- last week when those fires hit San Francisco it was early in the morning Eastern time and yet it was listed as 'Breaking' as we neared 7 PM
- and of course the fact that Covid-19 deaths rose that day is usually the lead story and always listed as 'Breaking' even though it's hardly news. Now if the total number
of deaths had gone down in this country since the day before ... THAT, my friends, would be breaking news.
