The Black Lives Matter Thread

That police station in Minneapolis that protesters burned down -- not even a start. It's gonna take a hell of a lot more burning down to stop this.

Protestors light Wendy's on fire, enter interstate after Atlanta death

Excerpt:

An Atlanta Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks, 27, was fatally shot by police Friday night was set on fire.

June 13, 2020 - Atlanta - Wendy's in flames, after demonstrators blocked the interstate and set it on fire. Protestors gather at University Ave. at the Atlanta Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Atlanta police Friday evening during a struggle in a Wendy's drive-thru line.

The restaurant caught fire Saturday after protestors broke windows at the restaurant and threw fireworks inside.

Oh, that's what it's gonna take. When a Civil War defeat, Reconstruction and a 20 years Civil Rights movement barely changes anything, there's really nothing left to do. I just hope that some of this rioting is also a response to the cesspool of criminality that occupies the White House.

I think the DC folk have been, though I haven't seen much coverage of it lately. When the idiot wasn't timidly descending ramps after his drugged speech at West Point, he was building a wall around the white house and the protesters turned it into a memorial. not sure where we're at now.

That Wendy's is not safe. someone was just murdered there friday and the police even know who did it and haven't charge him! If we can't have a fast food place that's safe for the public, it's hard to feel bad if it's gone.

It's really hard to buy into the argument that there's something fundamentally unsafe about that particular Wendy's. Do we need to destroy every building that hosts a murder? If so, that would include the Dakota Building and St Patrick's Cathedral.

I'm not rooting for burning. And I'm certainly not going outside to burn anything. Especially with this deadly and very contagious virus out there. But that's what it's gonna take. I'm just opining. That's the only leverage they really have. And we have 400 years of history to support this. Cop's are gonna continue to brutalize and cover-up even with these riots because they can. Not because they shouldn't. Because they can, and because they can get away with it.

Re: The Black Lives Matter Thread

The country's had 400 years to help them. How much longer should they have to wait? When is enough enough? Enough should've been enough way before I was even born. And we're still all-deliberate-speeding them. And the scumbag GOP has taken over the country and intends to set it back 100, maybe 200 years. Black felons in Florida still can't vote even though the State overwhelmingly passed a resolution to abolish its draconian felon anti-voting laws. The Supreme Court shredded the voting rights act and is now hell bent on upholding all forms of voting suppression laws. All that's left now is for the GOP to proclaim that the sun revolves around the earth and for the AMA to bring back blood-letting and leech therapy. Oh, and the nutjobs that are propping up the vile GOP that believe in the invisible man in the fucking sky with the magical powers that will fix everything -- but only if you telepath your secret thoughts and wishes to him. That's real progress.

Real progress doesn't typically happen without violent revolution. Because that's all that the power structure will really listen to.

Re: The Black Lives Matter Thread

Well, burning a Wendy's doesn't really solve the problem. What goes a long way toward solving the problem is being able to fire those Philly cops. But police unions have gotten so strong and so confrontational that it's impossible to fire a bad cop and make sure he doesn't work somewhere else. They will reflexively defend the most heinous behavior and attack anyone who doesn't support them. Until something is done about actually being allowed to hold police accountable for their actions, all of this is just talk. And you'll keep having George Floyds.

Cuomo signed legislation this week banning chokeholds and opening disciplinary records. So if an officer is caught on video giving someone a chokehold, he'll go through a long process during which he'll be paid and probably get off on a technicality. Even if he's found guilty and fired, he'll quickly find a job somewhere else, even though his records will be open.

This is not to say all cops are monsters. But there's no incentive to rein in the ones who are.

Good ol' Charley Pierce on Albequerque, excerpted -- natch!

Excerpt:

What little I understood about this country is now completely obsolete. Things have come so unstrung that I look out from the aquarium that is my life now and I don't recognize what I'm looking at anymore. The news is exotic and unfamiliar. My fellow citizens appear to be at the end of a very short rope. And, in general, the country seems unprepared for anything that might happen, and a lot of things are happening at once. There is now only one overriding question:

What is this bullshit, anyway?

Item: things got wildly out of hand in Albuquerque on Monday night.

[***]

This is the second episode that I know of in which armed camo clowns gathered to protect a statue. (There was an earlier one in Brandenburg, Kentucky.) Now, someone has been shot. It's only a matter of time before one of these episodes turns into a serious firefight in which unarmed demonstrators get caught between the police and the militia—and neither group, I feel safe in observing, is predisposed to support the demonstrators if things get wild all at once.

[***]

This is really time for serious national leadership, which I seem to recall as having been something valuable. Instead, we've got a president* who seems to relish stoking this unrest, a supine Republican Party that's just trying to get to November without disintegrating entirely, and general prayer rising in the country that we just get through another day without a mass casualty event, or yet another African-American citizen's dying in dubious circumstances.

Re: The Black Lives Matter Thread

Viral video alert! Racist scumbag "Karen" accuses Filipino black man of defacing his own property with "Black Lives Matter" graffiti, never considering that a black man could own a house in her upscale San Fran neighborhood. She thought she could disguise her racism in politeness. The sanctimonious typewriter thought the homeowner needed her approval to express his political opinions. She called the cops, who showed up and didn't even bother getting out of their patrol car because they immediately recognized the homeowner, a law-abiding citizen who's been living in that house for about 20 years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNOro7utXpQ

The husband in the background was eventually fired from his job after the video went viral. The homeowner, James Juanillo, was on Lawrence O'Donnell's MSNBC show last night, where he gave a wonderfully persuasive and articulate interview, answering the tough question -- why didn't he simply tell the "Karen" that he was the owner of the home in question -- which he refused to do, by design. If I find video of Juanillo's MSNBC appearance, I'll post it.

Damn, that was moving. It's an odd feeling, being at protest and wanting it to be peaceful, so your friends and family and neighbors all get home safely, and the buildings you've seen your whole life stay in-tact, but at the same time having a thought in the back of your head that if everyone's lights are out at 9pm, the police whose brutality we're protesting against will be very happy the protest has gone quiet, and if there's nothing to report on the news, sadly, that protest probably yields little but content for instagram. I don't want shit to burn, but I see why it does.
