Admin Request: On Sharing Stories
Edgy MD Jun 15 2020 08:27 PM |
Guys, thanks for sharing all that you share. Most of what I've read that's been shared here is richer and more useful than journalism I'm getting elsewhere. But please let's stay within good standards and copy and paste only one or two key paragraphs, and then include a link for those who want to read more.

Some sites are realllllly bad with this. some of these garbage web 2.0 designs make it really tough. also at least include a synopsis. I can't click on every link someone says "hey, click this" on.

This seems sensible because some of the articles linked are behind a paywall or require a membership. And if I do click, I also want reputable sites that won't woof my cookies all over the Internet. So the preview of a paragraph or two helps me determine if I want to click or not. Later

That's true. A little more context than "Hey, lookie what I found ..." is appreciated.

Same here. My POV here is that this forum is best when it's about what YOU/WE think, not merely a parroting of what others write/tweet/yap. That doesn't mean outside sources can't and shouldn't enhance our thinking but one shouldn't be a substitute for the other. In short, posts such as: TRUMP IS AT IT AGAIN [link]; or OH GREAT, MORE JETER WORSHIP [link] are the worst things around here, both lazy and boring. Beyond that (at least according to several here) they're also the most likely to be ignored meaning that they're unlikely to advance the topic anyway, and that's assuming they were even part of a discussion in the first place. Some posts seem to just be dropped into vaguely related threads for lack of anywhere else to go. The better posts which seek to attach an outside source to enlighten an ongoing discussion, IMO, go more like this: - tell us, rather than have us guess, what the linked article is actually about [Joel Sherman admits he 'Makes up shit "all the time" '] - pick out a choice sentence or three that best synopsizes its central point ["Getting actual sources is too much work ... so I just pretend to talk to people" short meaningful excerpts are better than none at all AND they're better than the entire piece regurgitated onto the page - add in YOUR thoughts on the matter such as why you agree/disagree with what's being said - THEN provide the link for those whose interest is piqued enough to want read in more detail
