Vacationing in the pandemic

I badly need a break but what to do?

All out of ideas and sorta uncomfortable about departing NYS we've made reservations to camp at Taughannock Falls State Park in August which I never heard of until last night and can't pronounce. Anyone been? Sounds like a nice place to spend a day but not necessarily a week, so may turn out to be a base for area wine trips/hiking etc.

Re: Vacationing in the pandemic

I've never camped there, so I can't speak to the park, but the falls is nice.(taller than Niagara) "Tog a knock". my wife went to Cornell, right there, so we've been a few times, including last May on the way home from Buffalo's graduation.

We're actually also looking at a fingerlakes house rental or something. though we should probably get on that. Trying to decide on risk/benefit to see if another family wants to come or not.

also because it's what I do...there are a ton of breweries and wineries in that area. I really like Wagner (has both), we considered getting married there. Abandon Brewing is around Seneca on Keuka Lake, but if you find it in stores, the beer is good and the brewer's a Mets fan.

I feel the same way (as JCL). We're going for a weekend upstate (near Hunter) for four nights. Was going to fly to Portland to see my daughter but have backed out of that. Need to find something else, however, 'cause it's what keeps me sane.

Re: Vacationing in the pandemic

We're supposed to head to Cape Cod in a couple weeks. We go every year to a house that has been in the family for almost 100 years. I'm on the fence about the travel but at least we're coming from CT, and we're not on any travel restriction lists. For now, anyway.

I have purchased a cargo box for the roof of the car, and a hitch rack that can hold all 4 bikes, so at least we can try to bring as much stuff as we'll need for the week that we are there. Gonna set up a grocery delivery as well.

We're doing a full week in the Adirondacks at the end of July. Even if nothing is open attractions-wise we can hike, boat, swim, etc. Should be nice.

I've been at that falls in Taughannock ... but it was like a millionteen years ago so, other than that, I got nuthin'

Outdoorsy type of vacationing is def the way to go this year ... as long as you're not jam-packed in next to others.

I'm afraid to go too far. What if the car breaks down or there's an accident? Going

to a strange emergency room? Yikes! We're going to try and mix things up this three day

weekend and do some stuff we don't normally do or haven't done in awhile. Nothing out

of state, but will involve some travel.

Re: Vacationing in the pandemic

We cancelled our week in Virginia Beach with 8 friends scheduled for next month. Mrs Lefty won't stay in a hotel room for the foreseeable future and flying is out of the question. So we're happy we took that week in Aruba in January. Will be self-quarantining for 14 days soon so we can go see Lefty Jr in DC for a few days. But that's it for vacations for the foreseeable future. When (if?) there's a vaccine, we're going to have a lot of pent-up traveling to do.

Yeah, I have no desire to go anywhere at all. I'm glad I've done a lot of traveling in my life because I'm not sure when I'll be able to do so again.

Me neither. Air conditioning for the Summer and a good book or movie and I'm happy.

Looks like the money we would have spent on vacation this year will be used on a new roof. We would have needed one in another year or two, anyhow. We may take some day trips toward the end of the year.

Re: Vacationing in the pandemic

Just got back from a week in the Adirondacks. This was really the near-ideal Covid vacation - we spent a week swimming, hiking and kayaking, having campfires and smores and dinner on the grill. Almost no social mingling and no reliance on entertainment options that aren't open anyway. Pics here.

The kids were a bit bored here and there but given the circumstances it went pretty well. New York state has some real untapped beauty. This is a barely-ever visited part of the Adirondacks (the far Northwest edge of the territory), but not any less scenic than the more well-tread regions around Lake George, Old Forge, etc.

Those are gorgeous!

My brother has a cabin up there somewhere and he's there all the time despite the long drive.

Did you take the hummingbird feeder?

Currently in DC with Lefty Jr after our 14-day family quarantine. Everybody in DC is wearing a mask (except Louie Gohmert, I guess). Took a nice long hike in Rock Creek Park this morning before it got too hot. Got takeout from The Federalist Pig. Loaded him up with toilet paper so his mother doesn't worry. And now we're bingeing The Mandalorian together. You don't know how much you miss your kid until you don't see them for 6 months.

Life is good.

No that was on the property and fully filled when we arrived. We watched them with fascination all week.

Break out the lobster-crackers and drawn butter, y'all, we just booked our Maine event: a cabin for a week right around Camden/Rockport, August 18-24.

Re: Vacationing in the pandemic

We're heading to Maine the week after LWFS. Our 4-day trip to the Catskills took away worries I might have had. Stayed at a small hotel where they were super-conscious of all the disinfecting/distancing rules. No maid service but ok. Ate at outside tables in restaurants. Great hiking, even saw a bear. Came back recharged the way you should after a vacation. For Maine: 3 nights at the beach in Bath; 3 nights near Arcadia; 2 nights in Portland. We had planned this year for 5 weeks in Southeast Asia but this'll do.

The family used to vacation on Monhegan Island Maine. Reachable only by boat from Port Clyde near Rockland/Camden, it may be a bit long for a day trip but there are accommodations

there (no idea what their status is these days) so if you're not booked solid already it might be worth looking into for a night or two. Not that there's a ton to do on the island other than

hiking and picnic-ing (although isn't that kind of the point?) and wondering what it would be like to live there year round as 30-some families actually do, but it might be cool to actually

be off the continent for a day or so. If you go tell 'em we said 'Hi' was last there in like the early '80s

I think my cousin just came back from there (shared two cabins/distanced appropriately with friends who booked WAY early). Will check it out, though.

Are out-of-state Maine visitors required to self-quarantine upon arrival this year?

In coastal Maine, the perfect pace for self-quarantining

By Walter Nicklin

July 31, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. EDT

Excerpt:

It's been an annual ritual for longer than I care to admit: summer weeks on the rocky coast of Maine. Much of the appeal, as with any tradition, is its changeless character. The precise times for high and low tides change each day, but in a predictable fashion. Although my children have grown from toddlers to adults — as old as I was when I first took them to Maine — the magical tide pools in which they used to splash are everlasting. The world might be going to hell, but summertime in Maine remains forever constant — “true north,” both literally and metaphorically.

Until this summer.

[***]

[T]he governor declared that all out-of-state visitors would be required to self-quarantine for 14 days. Mainers' cordial, symbiotic relationship with so-called “summer people” now took on a wary, fearful tone. With my car's Virginia license plates, I might as well be Typhoid Mary.

[***]

On the horizon 11 miles out is Monhegan Island, inspiration for some of America's best-known artists — Robert Henri, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Jamie Wyeth. In my mind's eye I can see their work. And is that a mermaid I hear singing?

Re: Vacationing in the pandemic

Vermonters and New Hampshirites haven't had to quarantine when going to Maine. Maine added New Yorkers, Connecticuters and New Jerseyites to that list last month. Folks from Massachusetts and Rhode Island are saying - what about us?
