Anyone remember the "Washington Redskins"?

Benjamin Grimm

The team, under unprecedented pressure, is going to do a "thorough review" of the team's name.

I don't know how long it should take to review a two-syllable word, but there you have it.

Re: Anyone remember the "Washington Redskins"?

I think the team, meaning owner Daniel Snyder, is trying to figure out a way to save face on the name change that he swore just a few years ago was NEVER coming: 'and you can quote me on that and put it in

all CAPS'
was (more or less) his quote. But the change is obviously coming so it's only a matter of when not if. The league is pressuring them to change and now major sponsors have jumped aboard including

Fed Ex (whose name is on their freakin stadium) and Nike who have taken Redskins merchandise off their websites. And when 'see no evil' corporations like the NFL & Nike get behind something -- even belatedly

and only on the heels of recent racial turmoil -- you know it's an idea well past its due date.

They should just change it to red skin potatoes - they can keep the name and just change the mascot and the merch.

I still don't think Snyder will change the name. He's been on team Trump from the beginning and he'll use Trump's tweet from this morning as cover for as long as he can.

I kind of think that once you undergo a "thorough review," whatever that is, you're kind of letting the toothpaste out of the tube.

Then again, Snyder is real slithery, and if anybody can get the toothpaste back in, he can.

Maybe something honoring the D.C. punk scene? All the choices-- Minor Threat, Fugazi, Bad Brains-- seem neatly, doubly resonant.

Anyway, it's official as of this morning. New name TBA.

According to ABC news this morning, the name they like is already taken and they are exploring negotiations with the owner of that name/logo.

they should have printed it out, scribbled over the logo, done a sloppy diagonal scan of it, and released that. would have been hilarious.

Well, sure.

There's also a stadium deal in this for Snyder if he plays his cards right.

Their current stadium (only 26 years old but pre-Snyder) is one no one likes and is a place no one likes (Suburban Md). The 'ancestral' home of the erstwhile 'Skins' is eastern DC where the old RFK stadium still is.

The idea to put a new stadium there, back in the city and more easily reachable to DC residents and those on the Virginia side of town, has been floated for years. But DC is, of course, federal land and neither

they nor the city of DC wanted to do Snyder any favors while he was still toting around that name. That some are convinced that moving the team back 'where it belongs' is going to instantly reverse their fortunes

are kidding themselves since it's tough to overestimate how much damage the Snyder era has done to the image of that team which OWNED the city 12 months a year for decades!

But wait, there's more!!!

Various sources are touting variations on a story that there's a whole buncha trash about to come down the chute. Nobody seems to be tipping their hand ... yet, but apparently a to-be released Washington Post

story is coming out on Thursday, and those in the know are just now hinting at it:

- “The warped and toxic culture of the Washington Football Team is about to be exposed in a sickening fashion . . . Again” [CBS' Jason La Canfora, a former team beat reporter]

- “What's coming is disappointing and sad.” [Julie Donaldson, NBC Sports]

- “There is much more going on . . . than a name change . . And it's not good. I did not get specifics, but get ready people.” [Scott Abraham of ABC 7]

- “A real busy week. And it's not all going to be about the name and it's not all going to be pretty.” [JP Finlay NBC Sports Washington]

Re: Anyone remember the "Washington Redskins"?

Twitter is on fire that damning news about Daniel Snyder will be released today or tomorrow. Most are speculating it will be sell-the-team-type bad.

I was a Redskins fan from the time I was 11 until 2016. I jumped to the Rams when they moved to LA. I made the switch because I didn't like the owner, coach, QB and fan base. But I also made the switch because I could not defend the name. It clashed with what my core beliefs had become. I switched to a new team that was in a new city with a new QB and a new coach and stadium on the way.

I'm glad I made the switch. Especially this week.

1. Snyder has long since failed to demonstrate that he is much more than a poopyface.

2. Yes, posters at the MOFo used to pine for him to buy the Mets.

3. The president touts him as a friend and supporter.

4. Minority owners had apparently gotten wind of the story and had been trying to sell their shares before it breaks.

Now someone with a lick of sense quietly trademarks potential names well in advance even if you publicly deny you're changing anything. This is done all the time, and was probably done by some of the people they're fighting in trademark court right now.

If I were a fan of the team, I wouldn't be too pleased with any of these. I might like "Swifts" if the logo includes the bird, and not Taylor. Griffins might be good too, if it's the lion-eagle creature, and not Merv.

RE: "lion-eagle creature" - only if they spell it Gryphon - not to be confused with any person or persons unknown. I will suggest a totally innocuous name - the Washington Fleet. Fleet has several connotations - a bunch of boats, for one. Speedy, for another. But there is an enema by that name as well, which opens the door (pardon me) for potential memes.

Washington went through this once before, not too long ago in the great scheme of things. When the NBA team dropped "The Bullets" as a nickname, the renaming of the team was turned over to the fans — via a poll featuring multiple obviously unworkable or confusing options and one boring-but-best-of-a-bad lot option that the organization had seemingly already selected anyhow.
