The Painted Bird (2019)

Just learned that Jerzy Kosinsky's novel The Painted Bird was released as a Czech movie last year. There must be an immediate American release pending because the interwebs are full of very recent takes. Am totally psyched. I read the book about 30 years ago and absolutely loved it. I read it two more times since then. Nothing to review yet, but here's the trailer.

One of the pullquotes from the reviews said that it will "stay with the viewer long after leaving the cinema."

But beyond Covid-19, how do arthouse cinemas survive without the free alternative weekly street tabloid to plug them?

Our local arthouse, the Bethel Cinema announced that it has closed permanently.

I watched it the other night. Unrelentingly grim. Some memorable disturbing shots but can't say I enjoyed it.

Do you usually enjoy memorable disturbing shots?

Lolol

Me, it depends, I guess. I haven't seen the movie. But I read the book three times before I learned of this movie. And right after starting this thread a few months ago, I went and re-read the book yet again. The book is chock-full-of scenes that would make disturbing shots in a movie. Many times over. Much of the book is very grim -- and violent. Imaginatively violent.

How did it come by its title?

How did it come by its title?

The book is about a child who is separated from his parents during WWII and wanders the countryside and forests of some unnamed European country, hiding and occasionally being taken in by strangers.

**SPOILER ALERT**

The book derives its title from an episode where the boy is taken in by a bird catcher. The bird catcher paints a bird that he had caught in several very bright colors and then releases the bird. The bird, now free, eventually finds his own family and tries to rejoin it. But the flock does not recognize the stray bird, now covered entirely in garish paints. So the flock, believing that an enemy bird is trying to infiltrate its ranks, attacks the painted bird, killing it.
