The Marlins bring their all their cooties to New York and the Mets try to build some momentum. Don Mattingly, currently filling out lineup cards with names of players he's scarcely been introduced to, has allegedly tapped Sandy Alcantara to start. Michael Wacha defends for the homies. If things work out, the Mets build a nice little bridge to deGrom Day, Andrés Giménez continues to establish himself as the greatest #60 in baseball history, and President Trump is removed from office.

I just realized what a good thread title this is! So what's up with the Marlins? Their ragtag team swept three from the Orioles the last few days. Did the Marlins slap together a decent team? Or are the Orioles really that hapless? This is a major opportunity for the Mets, and I hope they take advantage of it. If they can sweep the Marlins they'll be at .500, the division will be tightened up, and the Mets will be right in the heart of things. (And a .500 record is probably all that's necessary to make the playoffs.)

We have no idea who's even starting tonight. THEY seemingly don't, either. If it's not time this weekend for 1-2 iterations of the traditional Get Shut Down By an Unpedigreed Rookie Right-Hander, I don't know when it will be.

The odd part is that they got mostly good pitching this past week [0 R / 4 H; 1 R / 4 H; 7 R / 11 H] despite having several of their better pitchers missing due to Covid. They did it by using 4, 5, and 5 pitchers in those games (iow, almost as many pitchers as hits allowed) w/only two guys going longer than 3 innings (including the guy who gave up most of the runs). On the other hand it was Baltimore and the Marlins won those games by 1, 1, and 1 run

So the rookie in his debut K'd the side, although with an Alonso 2B mixed in. On the other hand he didn't figure to go long in this game anyway and the fact that it took him nearly 30 pitches to get through the frame likely shortened his outing by an inning. Wacha had already K'd the side in top one but managed to do so w/no hits and in a more reasonable 19 pitches.

Is Wacha going to get ANY borderline calls tonight? There have been about 6-to-8 just-on/just-off pitches by him tonight and I don't think he's had a single one go his way so far.

It didn't matter but I agree with Gary about the decision to PH Dozier for Nimmo. Lefty/righty I understand but Dozier isn't very good and Nimmo excels at getting on baseball which was needed down 3. It worked out as the ump missed the call on 3-2.

Half of me wanted Alonso to take a big turn there to force a throw, especially with a wet ball. The other half of me was glad Alonso didn't take a turn at all there, because he might have fallen on his ass on the wet turf.

Edgy--That q. was raised on Twitter (about Hamilton): @TimBritton I wondered if he'd PR right away. I think because Dozier wasn't the tying run, they were saving Hamilton in case he could run for someone else. (Idk who that "someone else" would have been. They opted against Alonso, and Hamilton may have scored had he run for Pete.)

Nimmo's stopping at 3d cost them a run and perhaps the game. I'm still surprised at Dom's failure to get the tying run in. Above it all, one minor leaguer after another and they lost.
