This was the same (seemingly lopsided) pitching matchup from six days ago, a game which the Mets won 3-1. Porcello was terrific for 7 innings and Lugo just as good over the final 2. Scherzer, on the other hand, struggled through the 1st (1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 27 pitches) then left with a "Tight Hamstring" (not sure whether it was his blue hamstring or his brown one). Nats have so far played only AL East teams (3-6) and the Mets (2-1) -- no Braves, no Marlins, no Phillies, and also no BoSox -- and even with last night's outburst, they're still near the bottom of both leagues in RS/G

Like the 4th dinky cue-shot National hit tonight... gets erased by a clinical DP (against Trea Turner, no less). It's shocking how refreshing even moderately-good defense is from this team.

I don't think that he forgot, I think that he thought it was a ball and the ump got around to calling it a strike as it was halfway to the backstop and Conforto's mind went elsewhere.

So after we got two on w/one out in the 7th: GiDP - K - K - GO - K - PO - K ... and I bet the whole sequence didn't take a total of 20 pitches. Only the pop-out left the infield although it was caught by an infielder so that doesn't really count either.

This game turned on Alonso's bedshot of a pinch hitting appearance. The McNeil DP also, but that was hardly a failure. Wasted good pitching and good fielding. Rojas needs to get these guys out of this winning allergy

Tack on another 0-4 to a RiSP that was at .213 before the game began And w/2 outs and RiSP it was .139 so now that's lower too.

When you are this bad there are many shitty options to choose from.

Yeah, but a lot of good pitching and fielding kept them right in it and one bounce away for most of the last seven innings. I demand a philosophical review of the hitting approach.
