Judging from what I saw in the dugout, dude can't even splinter a bat properly.

Considering that, given the quality of his ABs lately, he might have swung at maybe half of those 12 balls ... it progress.

Pete Alonso's on pace to set the major league record for biggest decrease in homers from one season to the next.

Who holds that record? Brady Anderson after that one big year?

I assume Ted Williams, from 1942 to 1943.

I dunno. Williams didn't play in '43. So he didn't have a season in '43.

Well, it's similarly questionable whether this is going to be a "season" in any meaningful sense, but even better is Hack Wilson going from 56 in 1930 to 13 in 1931, a difference of 43.

Agree. But still, lotsa flukey stuff will come from this season. Lotsa stuff's gonna have to be asterisked.

I figured Pete'd hit 10 or 12 homers, tops this year. Between the shortened season, that the opposition would have studied him intensely -- and continue to do so -- based on his awesome rookie season, and that last year's baseball was likely juiced to an extent greater than ever in baseball history, I expected a big drop in homers, anyways, even adjusting for the pandemic conditions.

On the other hand, though, and to Pete's credit, last season's hit tracking data indicated that Alonso didn't benefit as much from the juiced baseball as much as other players did. His power is for real and his home run hitting mechanics are solid. Pete still outhomered every other major leaguer last year, with the same ball and playing his home games in a pitcher's park.

Yeah, i was looking for someone who didnt come with an asterisk.

Hack Wilson led the league in 1930 in HR, RBI, BB, SLG ,OPS, OPS+ ... but baseball-reference says no mvp votes?

The modern version of the MVP was introduced in 1931, replacing the "League Awards", which stopped in 1929, according to Wikipedia:

The league would do well, and create a lot of interest, if they elected to retroactively honor players with awards that didn't yet exist in the season in question.

Maybe they should save this exercise for the next covid stoppage when everyone is more desperate for anything to write about!

I was thinking the other day that "There's no way this lineup should be unproductive. Maybe they just need a vet, especially with the batting coach working offsite."

And then I remembered Canó.

Re: Pete Alonso Sucks

I wonder how much the hitting coach matters - the only time I really think of them is when they are being fired as a scapegoat after a slow start instead of the manager
