Yo painted himself as unreliable for any team looking to sign him next season. He's made his big money, but he'll be signing a pretty cheap contract next year. There are right ways to opt out, and wrong ways. Yo did it the wrong way.

Maybe between that and the pandemic, he'd rather take his chances in 2021. He's already got enough money to live out his life like a king.

Like Namor said in the MIA thread, best case for him NOT looking like an unprofessional, immature and petulant child is if someone connected to him was tasked with providing Brodie/Rojas with the information, and there was a simple communication breakdown there.

If he'd only phoned in this morning to tell the Mets he was opting out, that would've made a huge difference. Then the Mets probably win and Peterson probably hurls a no-hitter.

It's also not a completely UNamateurish thing to put out a passive-aggressive, "but it's TRUE" press release just before a game. Assuming it went EXACTLY the way that Mets management said-- and keep in mind, this is coming from the "pay no attention to the chair-throwing behind you: NO CHAIRS HAVE BEEN THROWN" set-- if BVW had gone the "personal reasons-undisclosed" route, and then let Cespedes hang himself... it might have been a lot less of a shitshow for the organization.

And now follow up stories indicate that Ces was upset over not being in the starting lineup and that his decision to opt out over "corona virus concerns" may actually have a bunch to do with the idea that not playing everyday will hurt his odds of reaching various performance bonus levels.

There are reasons to give a guy hitting .161 the day off that have nothing to do with money, especially when the guy just returned from a two-year injury holiday and is clearly not all the way back. But hey, if his attitude was getting in the way, it's addition by subtraction.

I loved watching him but F him. The Mets did everything they could to get him ready to play and inserted him in the lineup right away even though he hadn't played in two years, didn't play in the March games, and only played in 2 exhibition games. He wasn't laying off any fastballs and couldn't hit a curve but he thought that he should be playing every day and might have been upset that he wouldn't reach his "incentives" because he wasn't playing every day. Good riddance. If the last 50 games are as bad as the 1st 10 at least we can now learn whether JD and Dom are good enough for full-time roles in '21.

Cespedes, for his slow start, was still on pace to make about $7M this season.

I don't blame him or anyone else for opting out, you had to expect some guys would, and he's always been especially enigmatic and never came off as a super reliable team guy indoctrinated into that whole tribal baseball culture, so he was at the top of my list of likely dropout candidates. The Mets probably did set out to embarrass him with their initial and subsequent announcements, but IMO, were punishing him primarily for resisting the tribe, less so for not communicating, and even less than that for being concerned about corona. They could have pretended he was not feeling well until they knew the deal. BVW definitely implied Ces had $$ concerns and that wouldn't surprise me, but it's all irrelevant now. I think it might be interesting if our play continues at this terrible pace or some guys cannot right themselves (Porcello or whomever) might consider the corona bail as the season goes on.

These two have been on a collision course for a while. Remember the Mets said they didn't expect him to play and Yo jumps on social media showing vids of him, in fact playing, and contradicting the Mets. The contract re-working I'm sure sewed a few more seeds of division, too. Not surprised he seemed to say "eff the Mets" and up and bailed, but a little surprised the Mets let us all believe he could've gotten kidnapped in the middle of the night or something to make Yo look like shit.

When the cases started going up in Centre County I was furious that my husband's company didn't close, but with all the problems with unemployment payments I'm glad he's working Plus it is still pretty low unless PSU opens up

It really, really doesn't. Here's the thing: I think there's no WAY CAA made a contract without receipts... so they wouldn't publicize/leak information countering the public narrative without being able to back it up. I CERTAINLY believe that BVW might attempt a "technically true" bullshit spin. I also think it's strange that so few people have even mentioned that the fact that it's Van Waganen-- his former agent, privy to all manner of personal info that the team might not have previously known-- at the head of the figurative table? I mean, is it any surprise that after the team sued him, and HIS FORMER PROFESSIONAL CONFIDANT is now his keeper, that he might be slightly paranoid about being treated fairly?
