This Year's Jacob deGrom Deserves His Own Thread Thread

batmagadanleadoff

Jacob deGrom is now baseball's hardest throwing pitcher. His pitches have ticked up a few MPH's over last season. His average fastball is 99MPH and his average slider is now averaging almost 94MPH.

This stat shows Jacob deGrom is getting even better, which is scary

Excerpt:

Good luck trying to hit anything thrown by New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom these days.

The 2020 NL Cy Young Award watch:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2020-pitching-leaders.shtml

deGrom wouldn't and shouldn't win it if the season ended right now, but he's one of the NL's best 10 pitchers this season, so far, and within striking distance of the league's very best. And by very best, I'm talking about based upon just three or four starts.

Re: This Year's Jacob deGrom Deserves His Own Thread Thread

Either that or there's more important Mets stories to cover right now -- like how Luis Guillorme might be the next Ty Cobb all thanks to a coupl'a lucky grounders that got through the infield for singles, soaring his batting average to three zillion and a half based on like six at bats.

Who the fuck cares when deGrom's next start is. Besides, if the Mets can win two more games, they probably clinch a playoff spot.

Well, when he skipped Friday, the report was that he would throw on Sunday or Monday and see how it felt.

The report yesterday was... what was expected. No report. Rest. Hurry up and wait.

Re: This Year's Jacob deGrom Deserves His Own Thread Thread

Mets' COVID and a missed start might have doomed deGrom's chances at the CY Young. he is 1 start behind the league leaders (8 to their 9) - that could prove fatal in such a short season.

The current contenders as I see them:

deGrom is second to Darvish in ERA and ERA+ and is first by a slim hair in FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). deGrom leads the league in strikeouts and K/9 despite the innings difference.

Bauer is the only one with less innings and I included him because he has thrown 2 shutouts! what if he threw 2 more? the stats are going to be hard to separate in such a short year so that is a great narrative for him with voters.

Fried just went on the DL which will likely remove him from the running - he was notable for having allowed zero homers which could have been a nice story for his candidacy if it kept up. He was also undefeated.

I think if it ended today, Darvish wins the award with deGrom 2nd and Fried 3rd.

Re: This Year's Jacob deGrom Deserves His Own Thread Thread

That newfound 100+ MPH fastball (yes, that's right -- "plus" (+)) and deGrom's sudden status as baseball's hardest throwing pitcher must be having a positive effect. Because deGrom's on pace to have the best season of his career -- better even than both of his Cy seasons -- at least pro-rated, granted, because he won't get to pitch even half as many innings as he's thrown in either of his two Cy seasons.

An oral history of Jake deGrom's college days, as told by his Stetson teammates and coaches. Can someone double-check this piece? I think it says that Davey Johnson --that Davey Johnson-- was the one who got deGrom to switch from infielder to pitcher in college. But I'm not 100% sure. I'm maybe 90% sure -- with a little bit of doubt. Because if it was Davey, I think I would've heard that story by now, which I haven't.

Re: This Year's Jacob deGrom Deserves His Own Thread Thread

So I went through my bummed out moment last night, as the dream of deGrom winning his third straight Cy seemed to die after the Rays game. Sigh. I thought he was still in the race going into last night's game, but no longer among the real frontrunners after his next to last disastrous outing where he gave up three runs and had to leave after two innings because of a hamstring issue.

deGrom was excellent last night. I'll take two runs allowed over seven innings with 14 K's and consistently hitting 100MPH on the gun every time out. But I thought deGrom needed to be even better than that to make a move on the Cy, plus needing for some of the frontrunners to get roughed up some in their final starts for deGrom to make up lost ground.

But this morning, I checked fangraphs and deGrom's leading the NL in xFIP, and he's second in fWAR to Darvish, 2.7 to 2.6 -- and that one tenth that separates Jake from the top fWAR spot is statistically insignificant, especially where fWAR is a theoretical statistic anyways. So who the hell knows? It looks like deGrom's chances are better than I thought last night, right after the end of the Mets game.

Bauer has 2 more starts (the only "candidate" that does) so he has an extra chance to impress the voters.

I really think they should have decided to award three MVP, CY, and ROY awards this year, one for East, one for Central, and one for West. Everything else is off-kilter this season. This would be the least crazy thing on the list.

Sure. But in a 162 game season, there'd be more separation between the pitchers. This year, there's at least a half dozen pitchers that have a realistic shot at the NL Cy Young. Some of those have better chances than others, but they all have a plausible shot.

Just as most CY / MVP / ROY contests boil down to September, this final week is essentially the September of this year so the final one or two starts for those guys will likely play a big part in deciding things.

Sure. But in a 162 game season, there'd be more separation between the pitchers. This year, there's at least a half dozen pitchers that have a realistic shot at the NL Cy Young. Some of those have better chances than others, but they all have a plausible shot.

Well that's pretty much my point, that this upcoming/on-going week and the final one or two starts from each will have an over-sized influence on these awards.

Trevor Bauer making it hard on Jake's Cy#3 campaign: 4IP -- O runs on one hit allowed, no walks, 5 K's so far tonight.

He finally gave up a run but 6 innings 3 hits 1 walk 1 run 9 Ks is still really good.

12 K's over 6 innings, not nine. And he lowered his ERA to 1.73. deGrom can't catch that ERA even if he pitches a complete game shutout in his final start.

The K's don't compute. If Bauer had 5 K's after four innings, he can't end up with 12 after six. Unless he struck everybody out over the last two innings and got four in one inning because of a ball that got away from his catcher. But the ESPN gamecast box score sez 12. Your nine K's are probably right.

12 K's over EIGHT innings - my update wasn't the end of his outing.

deGrom's not gonna win another close race with this club behind him. I know some of you like this race but I hate following the individual awards because you gotta hope the other guys screw up

Well, if nothing else, the Mets should get a taste of all the major awards voting — in some cases more than one player. Conforto and Smitty should see some MVP love, and Peterson and Gimenez should drink from the Rookie of the Year well. Some rebel might throw some points to Guillorme too, but unfortunately, they historically only give RoY voters three votes.

I'm no longer sure what the club has to do with this. Pitcher Wins, thankfully, are pretty much meaningless by now, in Cy voting Otherwise, there's no way deGrom would've won any of his other Cys. Unless you mean defense?

Though, granted, deGrom's no longer in the driver's seat. I'm guessing that ERA is the most weighted stat and deGrom probably has to pitch something like 11 innings of no-hit ball in his final start to win the 2020 Cy.

But we'll see.

Re: This Year's Jacob deGrom Deserves His Own Thread Thread

Jayson Stark, who will be voting on the end of the season NL awards, reveals his ballots for The Athletic.

https://theathletic.com/2090616/2020/09/25/stark-handing-out-my-2020-awards-from-cy-young-to-cy-yuk-mvp-to-lvp/

Stark would give Trevor Bauer his first place vote for this year's Cy Young award but concedes that the category is somewhat muddled and that deGrom could still overtake Bauer on his ballot -- but that deGrom would have to have a spectacular final outing.

In the made-up category of LVP or Least Valuable Player, Stark gives the NL award to Yoenis Cespedes. And in the other category Stark makes up, --The Cy Yuk award,-- Steven Matz gets Stark's third place vote.

Jacob named a finalist for NL Cy Young, much as Meryl Streep inevitably gains an Oscar nomination.
