You're Out

Thom Brennaman -- local TV Reds announcer and Fox game-of-the-week caller got hot-mic'ed during last night's game using the F-word.

Not that f-word, but "fag." But, it was way worse than just that. There was dripping contempt in his voice as he expressed it.

Came back after and excused himself from the broadcast (as a home run was hit, remarkably), apologizing but you could tell he knew there was no "not guilty" plea available to him.

He's been invited to speak at the Republican Convention so not all is lost

Referred to Kansas City as "one of the fag capitals of the world." Which I had not known. Always learning new things from my hateful friends at Fox!

Re: You're Out

I'm thinking it was New York since he was calling Matt Harvey Night. But whatever.

Brennaman in the games I've heard seems okay. The Reds fans who hear him everyday find him pompous but popular, like Joe Buck also a Fox star and son of a broadcast legend.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I find it pleasantly amusing when another self-important

windbag publically shits the bed and has to take the sheets out to the dumpster

and throw them away along with his career. Buh-bye, Brenny...

It takes a certain kind of person to work for FOX.

And they prove it each and every day.

Local sports announcers like him aren't really working for FOX. I mean they are in the long run but in an entirely separate sphere from the news division.

SNY is Wilpon owned but the cable station that carries the Mets could just as easily be part of one of the inter-connected networks of local affiliates that

broadcasts most Baseball/Hoops/Hockey regular season stuff, one of them being under the FOX umbrella, and, if so, it's not like they wouldn't hire or

keep Gary, Keith & Ron to do games. In fact FOX did hire Keith to do some studio work on their national games back in the fall of '18 I think it was.

I think FOX was trying to sell those cable-locals as a package and that Disney was set to buy, but that either fell through or I'm screwing up the details.

But more importantly, the VERY FIRST THING they teach you in broadcast elementary school is to treat EVERY mic as if it's a HOT mic. You wouldn't

figure a second generation broadcaster would get tripped up on that but I guess complacency sets in eventually.

Even more important, don't be a homophobic asshole who would say things like that in the first place. If he said that yesterday in the booth, chances are it's probably not the first time in 14 years he's muttered some stuff like that in front of co-workers.

Yeah, I mean whoever he was talking to is likely just as bad and probably

should just go slither away as well.

It's probable anyway. I didn't hear cackling like Billy Bush from the other person, but Thom seemed to know he could say that in front of whoever he was in front of without any consequences.

So when are we going to get to find out what 'Fag Capital' he's talking about?

I mean, some people might want to make plans, either towards or away from, said city based on Brennermann's recommendations.

A notable part for me is that it was during the pre-game show.

I've heard enough radio broadcasters hit the autopilot by the sixth inning, well into beer three or four, but shit-talking like your Uncle Todd before the first pitch is hardcore.

You know, he wasn't specific, was he referring to Kansas City, KS or Kansas City, MO? 80% of the city is on the Missouri side but maybe things are a little crazier in Kansas.

Y'know, asking for a friend.

Lots of tributes to Kobe Bryant today on what would have been his birthday with probably no mentions of his in-game/on-court gay slur towards a ref near the tail-end of his career.

Outrage in these sorts of cases can be ... let's say selective.

Kobe, at the time of the slur, was fined by, I believe the league rather than the team, and not suspended by either.

Here's the thing-- it's not just that he said the word. It's that the "slip-up"-- along with each subsequent apology attempt-- reveals that he's kind of a troglodyte. And if your job is to build a bridge to the public on a nightly basis, and serve as a sort of audio ambassador for the ballclub... how helpful is it to the club that the public knows this guy feels this way about them/their family and friends? Never mind whether forgiveness is deserved... in a case like this, in a job like his, how is forgiveness plausible?

Re: You're Out

That's perfectly valid. I mean to suggest that the inital infraction itself is worthy of a suspension. Worse has been said here — sometimes maliciously, sometimes ironically. I admit that I haven't closely followed his attempts to eat his words, and if he's chronically fumbling them, I certainly amn't going to defend him.

Re: You're Out

The thing is, NO apology is ever considered good enough by the general public. No one has yet found the magic words to show contrition without also seeming to make excuses, or without seeming to be mostly sorry about being caught, or any number of other things. You can either say too little, or too much. If you get into a situation where you have to apologize, you're doomed. That seems to be where we are these days.

Re: You're Out

Even more damning than the content of his words was the tone of them. He did not use that word in a joking way or with any degree of levity. It sounded like it came from a position of hate, or disgust. He's not coming back from that.

If you'd like to call a local Cincy talk sports show to discuss it(or just to tell them what a Jerk Pete Rose was), the number was 1-800-THE-BIG1 (1-800-843-2441) when I was in an airport listening to it.

OE: it may have been 1-800- BIG-RED1 - it was several years ago.
