I've always been rooting for him as he came up through the minors, though only because of his stats. Seeing his attitude, starting last spring when he essentially lost any chance at starting to Pete Alonso, yet showed no bitterness, and cheered Pete along, impressed me mightily. And after last night, I'm even more impressed. He's a real mensch.

Count me among the Dominic Smith fans. He seems like a good guy and he has obviously worked hard to earn his place on the roster.

The thing is, his stats were mostly no big thing in the minors, especially for a first-rounder. And while he hit well enough to keep advancing (and that first-round tag helped there), between the growing gut and the always sleepy eyes, it was easy enough to suspect that he wasn't going to blossom. I don't know if he quit smoking weed or it's all in the sleep apnia dianosis, but now he looks like he can hit anybody out there. He still takes at least one crazy swing per game, but I saw him down 0-2 against a lefty a few games ago and I was surprised to realize that I was still feeling good about his chances, and then he smashed the next pitch.



He got some pitches to hit in an at-bat yesterday and came up empty, and then he tried to destroy his helmet with his bare hands after going to the dugout. Now we know that he was having trouble keeping his head in the game.

What a great band name: The Since-Deleted Tweets. The whole Dom Smith angle is just fascinating. The initial hype, followed by iirc, some smartassy comment from (I think-does anyone else remember this?) Keith Law tearing him down as a young prospect, chatter about his weight and attitude, dismissal that eventually permeated the fan base, amazon comeback. Currently he's way better than Alonso, and the very soul of the team

Possibly, but there was definitely quite a bit of whinging about the weight/supposedly diminished defensive range during Dom's first couple of minor-league scuffles.
