I didn't know where to put this...and I meant to have posted this yesterday, but last week my wife found this 1985 Mets scorebook at a local thrift store. It has a Shea game ticket attached from 35 years ago yesterday.

Bonus: Ray Knight signed the empty scorecard.

Aug 16th is the anniversary of a bad date for royalty.

72 years ago today, Babe Ruth died

53 years ago today, Elvis Presley died

2 years ago today, Aretha Franklin died

That's a Sultan (of swat), a King (of Rock 'n Roll), and a Queen (of soul)

Elvis was 43 years ago.

My parents were at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965. They do not have any souvenirs of the occasion, alas.

50 years ago this weekend -- Thursday March 11 thru Saturday March 13: The Allman Brothers Band, Live at the Fillmore East.

The recordings were all apparently done on Fri & Sat. On opening night Thursday, the Allmans were the opening act for Elvin Bishop and Edgar Winter. But when promoter Bill Graham saw the house start

to empty when the 'warmup act' finished their set, he quickly shuffled the deck for the weekend dates and the ABB went on last on Friday & Saturday nights (and into Saturday and Sunday mornings).

I may be going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing that the writer here is a fan.

That was the first REM album I bought on CD rather than vinyl and kinda knew even then it was a ripoff that would not last

When a favorite band takes a turn that isn't quite a pure sellout, but tends to piss you off, there's usually a track you grumblingly forgive them for, right? The track that makes you wish they had gone in that direction.

There was like 31 flavors of REM on this record.

You got your Mandolin Rain, you got your old-school mumbly-grumbly Stipe; new-school, annunciated, Voice of a Generation Stipe; you've got your RnB funk, you got country, you got guest vocalists, you got your sunshine pop.

For me tracks 7-9-10-11 all hold up as REM-worthy, so I guess I like country/guest vocalist/Mills-sung REM. If I never hear Religion or Radio Song again I wouldn't give a damn.

Yeah, I can live on side two also. I mostly love "Texarkana," but those damn baroque string beds are there, and they take the countermelody at times, answering the tag at the end of the refrain with a line that should have gone to the guitar.

Yah I also go with Texarcana. Less whiny than most.

So you made me re-listen to this album for the first time since I don't know when.

    Thoughts:

    1. This much more Light Rock than I remembered.

    2. When I was a freshman in college in 1991-1992 and worked at the college radio station, my DJ partner and I would mix together songs (we didn't call 'em mashups back then) in "clever" ways. One mix was "Endgame" with "You Can't Touch This," which we called R.E.M.C. Hammer. I'd totally forgot about that until today.

    3. To answer Edgy's question, "Half A World Away" is a pretty song. I don't know if it's the direction I wanted R.E.M. to have gone in, especially since it easily could've fit on either of their two previous albums, but it was pleasant to listen to. "Me in Honey" is good too.

I'm sure a bunch of them were, although if you read the linked NYPost account it talks about the crowd swelling to around 2.500 as word of mouth got around.

A local TV station got wind and came down to take a look (that's where the film is from) and it mentions Roger Angell in the stands sitting with former big league

hurler Smoky Joe Wood. Wood, who pitched mostly for the Red Sox from 1908 thru 1922, was a 91 y/o Connecticut resident at the time.

Sunday was the 50th anniversary of the Concert for Bangladesh.

I had dreams of it being my first concert. My friend's father had some dealings with Allen Klein and he (the father) thought that maybe he could get tickets and if so I could go with the father and my friend. Meanwhile, my family was going on a vacation to Montauk which ordinarily I would have looked forward to but I really wanted to go to that concert. My family was uninterested in my wishes and took me along to Montauk. As it turned out my friend's father was unable to score tix from Klein so it was moot but I didn't know that until I got back from Montauk and throughout the whole vacation I grumbled about my missed opportunity.

Fifty years ago today, I attended my very first Mets game. I was eight years old.

I remember a scoreboard message that wished Cleon Jones a happy birthday.

I remember being excited to see Gil Hodges come out of the dugout for a mound visit.

And I remember that our seats were near the back of the Mezzanine section. My parents had never been to Shea before, so didn't know how awful those seats were. You couldn't see the sky or the scoreboard. (Terrible stadium design!) They complained to an usher and we got moved to better seats.

Mets lost 1-0. I didn't get to see the Mets score a run until my grandfather treated me to my second ballgame, the following June, a win over the Pirates which happened to be Jim Fregosi's best day as a Met.
