Inspired by KC's remark in the AON thread...

I've been thinking about gasoline brands lately, as a kid I loved how this basic commodity was differentiated primarily by their colorful logos. Most of the new-school brand imagery is ugly (Lukoil), lazy (Valero, Speedway) or tries too hard (BP). These aren't all of them but:

It occurs to me I rarely see Texaco stations anymore, and as kid that stood out for for reliability, even if as a matter of taste, I preferred blue to red as a primary color. Come to think of it, the c-store and retailization of gas has really de-emphasized the service station as a thing so I also don't see much Shell or Chevron out there anymore either.

Sunoco was exciting with the bright yellow/red and the arrow shooting through it. Wow.

Gulf to me was a brand for your grandfather, or guys who liked golf. It looked like a orange golf ball. I think this was because there was a Gulf station near my grandfather's home.

Esso with its squiggliness became EXXON and got pretty severe. Cool tiger but underutilized as a brand asset.

Mobil: Classy, graceful brand, flying horse, good for your car. Yes.

BP: (old school) was very British, a forest green you'd see on a hunt, that has since become a photoshop bullshit green.

Citgo: Get outta here with your ugly red triangle.

Amoco: Cool fire, yet, pollution and danger!

Chevron: Gas for chevrorets. Not exciting.

Getty: Boring but good associations with Mets sponsorship. It was also the station closest to my house growing up. I think these all became Lukoils at one point when the Russians took over.

Union 76: DYNAMITE logo, association with racing, but saw very few stations in the NE. When I am out west I love to buy gas at 76 (or Sinclair, which I don;t ever remember around here). Easily 10 better than Phillips 66.

Shell: The gas preferred by scallops. My mom collected scallop shells so I had a soft spot for them. As a kid I sent away from the free "Shell answer man" series of car-care booklets but never really read them. I just liked having them.

Vote for the coolest brand (your definition of cool) and explain your choice. Does the coolness of gas logos influence your purchase decisions?

Mobil.

As a Jets fan, I started to use Hess gas (Leon Hess owned the team) but every time I used it my car had problems, so I stopped.

The was a brand new Sinclair station in Norwalk just off Rt 7 on the Post Road. I passed it on the way to work. But since I don't work there any more, I don't know if it is still there.

The logo doesn't mean anything in my choice of gas.

Went with Sunoco's lightning bolt, it's just cool. Will rate top ten in another post.

Re: Let's Talk About Gas

marathon, clearly, is the superior fuel for the long haul.

sinclair comes in a clear second, because dinosaur.

octan has been, since 1992, the official fictional fuel brand in the lego universe, and they take third.

dinoco provides fuel in the cars multiverse, so they get fourth.

shell comes in fifth, because they were the lego gas station of my youth. knocked down a smidge from octan because, well, octan doesn't pollute. but shell is my usual fueling spot.

quickchek is my next, because they (usually) have free air at their fuel-featuring locations, and i tend to always have leaky damned tires.

hess would be seventh, because trucks, if i knew where a hess station still was.

exxon needs to bring back the tiger tails. the memory of which keeps them on the list at eighth.

gulf makes for a pretty race car livery, so they make the list at nine.

since i need a tenth, i'll go 76. a decent logo.

Re: Let's Talk About Gas

Exxon's tiger was too similar to Tony. Even as a kid with no particular personal stake, I felt like suing somebody.

BP used to feel like I was shopping upscale. Now it feels like the opposite, but I'm not sure why. And they also market under alternative names with the same green sun logo. Confusing!

Hess stations got gobbled up by Marathon, right? Do they still maintain the Leon Hess code of cleanliness?

We have a lot of offbrand filling stations in Baltimore. Can I interest you in some Osprey?

Re: Let's Talk About Gas

Speedway took over the Hesses near us, but it may be a Marathon-associated brand. They totally mail it in, logo-wise. HESS to me always came off really German, especially with the holiday toy thing.

Kelloggs and Exxon have squared in court off over using a tiger as a mascot where they intersect.

Getty Gas -- major 1970s Mets sponsor:

Getty was the descendent of 'FLYING A' brand, which was the MFY main TV sponsor during my early days of baseball viewing.

This topic partially references one we had a week or so back about how baseball games (and other sports) were strictly seen as the province of males (and mostly

blue collar one at that, save for golf) and as such were almost exclusively sponsored by a beer brand [Rheingold for the Mets, Ballantine for the Yanx] a cigarette

brand (or two), a gasoline (you wouldn't let your wife choose where to go for things like that) or maybe tires and razor blades although those last ones those seemed

to be more for nationally televised network games as opposed to local ones.

Re: Let's Talk About Gas

Also, each team had an exclusive official bank sponsor, a forerunner of 1 in 3 or so of the ballparks being named for banks.

The Mets, of course, were Manufacturers Hanover.

Plenty of ballparks named for beer sponsors too, but no parks named for filling stations, interestingly.

Re: Let's Talk About Gas

Seemingly overnight this week my local-around-the-corner Citgomart became a Dino.Mart!

I guess Sinclair is making a No Westchester move. Fresh coat of paint, new signage and fancy

gas pumps and the dingy place got a much needed face lift. Home of the emergency 12-pack.
