The thingie (the new thingie) is that warming up a guy and not using him has come to be seen as really bad form by a manager, and interpreted almost as an insult by the reliever in question. And the manager is setting himself up for If I suck tomorrow, I'll be blamed, and the data will show I'm well-rested, but you had me throw 30 pitches in the bullpen for NOTHING. But there's got to be some nuance. OK, he threw 30 pitches in the pen and he's probably no good for tomorrow and maybe the day after. But now he's thrown 30 more, under duress, and is probably down for a longer stretch. Acknowledge that the situation you got him up for no longer exists, and cut your losses.
