I just want to throw out there, and I wonder how others who subscribe feel, that I think Tim Britton is the best writer on the Mets beat right now. Agreed. I'm a subscriber as a friend's son is a beat writer for the Nets. The Athletic is taking full advantage of the collapse of conventional newspapers to collect good writers, and Peter Gammons.

I have never read the Athletic, mostly on the principle that I can get most information for free on the web, so why pay for a subscription... however, nowadays, the NY News, the NY Times, Newsday and even ESPN Insider (which I doubt has much to offer) are subscription services...so if I have to subscribe to one of these, would the Athletic be more worthy than the others?

I was with ESPN Insider until a couple of years ago. I found it to be garbage and was only really reading Mel Kiper and the other NFL draft gurus the week before the NFL draft towards the end. I check The Athletic daily and am usually glad I did so.

I've often been tempted to become an Athletic Supporter but resisted. I figure if its really important the locals will have it, and I don't read anything free or otherwise about the NFL, NBA, College Sports, Olympics, pro soccer etc. I wonder if they'd give me the hockey-MLB package at a 60% discount

The Athletic usually has discounted subscriptions. I got mine for $36 a year. I've broken down and subscribed to a few things this year, given the fact that journalism is under attack from so many sides.

I took a chance on the Athletic at $1 per month for six months. I'm looking mostly for NFL coverage, but I'm looking forward to checking in on Tim Britton's work, too.
