Free Agents--Catchers

You need a catcher or the ball won't stop, or something like that. Who will be the Opening Day catcher for the Mets in 2021?

Wilson Ramos had a terrible season. The Mets have an option on retaining his services but I doubt that will happen.

Tomas Nido is then the next option.

Here are the Free Agents:

Obviously, J.T. Realmuto is the best choice and might be the best FA at any position. If Steve Cohen is confirmed as the owner the Mets will have the money to sign him but what if he wants 7 or 8 years and Sandy advises Mr. Cohen that Realmuto will be 30 in March, 2021 so that's not a good investment? What if Realmuto simply doesn't want the honor and glory of being a New York Met or he gets a better offer?

None of those are great choices. Russell Martin was a FA for 2020 but didn't play anywhere so perhaps he's an option.

Was Martin not signed? I'd want to know why

Investing in a catcher is always a gamble. Piazza was already 30 when we gave him 7 years, and the first four of those seven years were worth the price, so you do have to consider that when making an offer. But you also have to consider how limited the alternatives are. I'd start at 6 and 150, and see where that goes.

Re: Free Agents--Catchers

I always find it funny how these FA evaluation pages (see above mlbtraderumors link) for catchers almost always focus more on the offensive aspect of the catcher more than the defensive aspect of the catcher. Too much offensive focus while overlooking defense, is what brought us to Ramos...with how poorly our pitching staff (other than deGrom/Peterson) have done, I think that a little more attention to the catcher's and center fielder's defense might be helpful in the future.

besides the obvious Realmuto, what are some of the backup ideas?

James McCann?

Salvador Perez? (walk year in KC) is he fully recovered from Tommy John surgery, and would KC rather not pay him $11 mil in 2021?
