Here's something for the "Did you know?" files: Did you know that the top seven batters on the Mets, in terms of fWAR, were all lefthanded batters? I suspect you knew something like that was true-ish, but you probably didn't know that the lefthanded rule went all the way down to the #7 guy — Luis Guillorme. But perhaps you did. I've always known you were particularly inquisitive, so who am I to say?

Did you know that Luis Guillorme out fWAR-ed J.D. Davis and Pete Alonso? Well, you might well have known it by the time you got to this paragraph, because the previous paragraph implied it pretty clearly. But it's still pretty stark to read it like that. You saw Davis' and Alonso's seasons, and as frustrating as they were, you know they each played almost every day, and they each got some licks in here and there. But fWAR doesn't give a shit. fWAR isn't the last word on anything, but clearly they value Guillorme's premium defense as well as his surprisingly hot bat.

Did you know that the division between lefties and righties on the team is near perfect? EVERY LEFTY hitter contributed more than EVERY RIGHTY hitter. So sez fWAR, anyhow. The only thing futzing up the perfect distinction between the two camps is the presence of Billy Hamilton, belonging to both camps, and the theoretical presence of Jed Lowrie, a theoretical switch hitter as well. Though who really knows with Jed Lowrie?

Here's one: Did you know that fully 1/3 (33.3%) of all fWAR earned by Mets righthanded hitters were earned by Tomás Nido in his brief seven-game season. Tomás' 0.3 fWAR isn't one third of the positive 1.9 fWAR earned by righty hitters, but it is after the -1.0 fWAR of the real sluggards is included. You know who you are, guys!

All of this adds up to the simply amazing distinction that the Mets had one of their best hitting teams ever if you only looked at the lefties, and one of their worst if you only looked at the righties. You'd probably have agreed that the Mets were stronger from the left side going into this season, but it's unlikely that you looked at Alonso, Davis, Céspedes, Ramos, Rosario, etc. before the season and said that the dextral Mets were going to be a Titanic-level disaster. It's unlikely that you'd believe it if someone told you that the Mets would reacquire Todd Frazier at the deadline, and that he'd mostly kind of stink, but he'd still outplay some other options that were floating around.

Maybe it was something to do with the angle at which the iPad was held when feeding video of batting sessions to Chili Davis. I can't really say, but between injuries and regressions, it was remarkable. Only good news is the off-chance that Nido's performance is a good indicator, despite everything we know about sample size.

Re: Rightmare

You're making a good argument for the Mets pursuing of Connecticut's own George Springer.

Re: Rightmare

I hear Yoenis Cespedes is a free agent too.

No, seriously, Springer is a guy. Realmuto is a guy.

I always say this but remember Ozuna best as an overmatched young guy who now looks like a good but rapidly fattening old guy now. Plus he can't field.

We should seriously see if Rosie can play center field this winter.

Re: Rightmare

Springie would certainly look to help the righthanded batsmithing, but I'm not sure how much centerfield he still has in him.

Rosario looks to have the skills for center, but would have to hit his way back into the lineup.

Unspoken in both scenarios is that Nimmo, though seemingly not hopeless in center, was consistently bad there in 2020.

Re: Rightmare

Something I read, and I can't remember who wrote it, (maybe DiComo?) said that the likely scenario is Nimmo and Conforto playing the corner spots next year and the Mets importing a centerfielder.

If there's no DH in 2021 that makes things complicated, because you don't want to bench Dominic Smith. Would J.D. Davis be traded? Or McNeil? It will be an interesting offseason. (I think all offseasons are interesting, but this one will be particularly interesting, what with new ownership and a new front office and uncertainly of whether or not 2021 will be as abnormal as 2020 was.)

Re: Rightmare

One other biproduct of a lot of lefties is that it makes moving folks around a summat harder.

I mostly credit the way Rojas moved folks around, but it was kind of weird the way people didn't rotate in and out of the DH spot, but got stuck there for a stretch before being sprung back into the defense. One week, Canó was the DH. The next week it was Davis, and then it was Alfonso.

And man, it was torture watching Alonso beat himself up at the plate and then beat himself up in the dugout for two innings.

Re: Rightmare

My guess is that the DH will remain, and that for the Mets it will be a lot of Alonso and Cano, with Smith getting most of the starts at first base.

If there's no DH, I think Smith has to be an outfielder, right? Does that mean Nimmo gets dealt?

Like I said, interesting offseason. I have to think that the DH decision will be made soon. Teams have to make plans.

Re: Rightmare

Nimmo is a LF'er. He doesn't have the instincts for CF and not nearly the arm for RF

Then the problem with that becomes whether he's a big enough bat that you usually want in LF.

Springer is at least an average defensive CF. The problem is he's already 31 y/o (as of a few weeks ago) so how long will he be an asset in CF

and how long a contract are you willing to go? Things change a lot of course so just because you sign him for, say 5 years, doesn't mean he's

locked in to the middle of the field for that long. So as long as they figure he can handle CF for '21-'22 he should be a consideration.

Re: Rightmare

This is one reason why they ought to be developing the hell out of Rosie as a CF. You need a lot of faith to believe he'll hit well enough, consistently enough, but at least he showed he's capable of hitting like a CF.

Defense all morning, hitting all afternoon. That's Dr. Lunchensteins prescription

Re: Rightmare

I certainly think they should consider it and try it in ST ... let's just not talk ourselves into believing that making it work is simply a matter of deciding it will.

As far as we know, he's never played any position but SS.

Three innings of left field in the majors, and sixty innings of third base in the minors.

It may be time for J.D. Davis to shuffle on out of our offseason planning.
