...you permanently moved out of your parents' house? I don't mean to go live at college (unless that turned out to be permanent) but when you got your own place for the first time, with or without roommates?

Also, those of you with grown kids, I'd love to hear their ages as well. (I mean the ages at which they moved out, not their current ages, unless they're over 19 and still with you. Thanks!)

This is prompted, by the way, by my 19-year-old daughter wearing out her welcome.

I wore out my welcome at 17 but managed five years of additional wear until 22.

Re: How old were you when...

I lived on campus during college, but came home on the off-semesters. After I graduated college, lived in an apartment with roommates for a year, then moved back home for about a year, then moved out for good. I think I was 22.

My last stretch at home as a resident of my parents' house was the summer after my senior year of college, when I was 22. I went back that fall to student teach and subletted apartments in Geneseo until I got my first full time "grown up" job.

Re: How old were you when...

I was 25. Returned home after college and stuck around for three years. Longer than I intended but I guess I enjoyed how much money I was socking away. When I moved out I was single and unattached and got a place of my own, with no roommate. One of my sisters was 24 when she moved out, when she got married. My other sister was 27, also single and unattached but married later.

Now I'm divorced and have both my kids with me, 24 and 19. The older one returned from college a little over a year ago, and the younger decided not to go.

I started staying in my college town summers when I was 22 got a real apartment, job etc at 23.

I think there's a real chance it'll be "normal" for us regular people to be living in 3-generation homes soon. Young folk can't find jobs or affordable places to live anymore

21 for me. I had no idea where I was going to sleep the night I graduated college; I decided to crash with some friends in Rochester and it turned out to be permanent.

My kids were, i believe, both 20 when they moved out for good. At least, I think it's for good.

My daughter left for Philadelphia after college so at about 22? She and her husband to be moved back in with us later for about a year

My son and his girlfriend left our house to move closer to college in his sophomore year so I guess he was around 19 or 20

Re: How old were you when...

Went from college (I lived at home) to the Army, so that "moving out" doesn't count. But I got married six weeks after I got out out of the Army. I answered 24, but it really was 23 (by one month). I'd correct my answer if I had the option.

My daughters were in their early 20's (after college) but i don't remember their specific ages.

I guess you were renting an apartment? How far from your parents' home was it? Did you have roommates?

Re: How old were you when...

22. After college, I got a job and a small apartment on my own. Not too far from home so I mooched a lot of meals. Parents retired to Florida 3 years later cutting off my return route if I'd ever considered it.

Lefty Jr. at 22 was on his own (but subsidized) while getting his masters and now is single, self-sufficient with an apartment in DC just when the whole dating scene has collapsed.

Yup. Rental in a complex about 10 miles from my parents. I had one roommate who was two years older than me but went to my high school.

I had nothing against my parents. I had a job and it was just my time to go.
