Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

The Induction show is on November 7, 2020 on HBO.

The nominating process will change some as the 25 year bar shifts a few months.

Pretty much will only matter to shoo-ins Foo-Fighters and Eminem. Good read below.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

The Foo Fighters pretty much close the door, don't they?

There have been other good bands since them, but I think they're pretty much the last rock 'n' roll band that was BIG + RELEVANT + GOOD.

I mean, I'm willing to hear an argument for the Killers or The White Stripes or something, but damn.

Any other credible inductees, at this point, would have to be pre-Foo. Everybody is sending their kids to rock school, but there ain't been no rockers conquering the zeitgeist in the 21st century.

T Rex is inducted largely on one song and influence. Here is Blondie and Mr Johnny Thunders doing Bang a Gong. JT won't be in the Hall but his iconic guitar and outfits are there. Debbie is terrific and JT on one of his very best nights. Quite a romp and bomp. Boy Howdy!

I agree with most of this. I'm not a huge fan, but (and I'm sure I have said this before) Dave Grohl is the biggest and best ambassador rock and roll has. He has punk bonafides and commercial success while being multi-talented musically. Most of all, he always looks like he is having fun without injecting sex or substance excess that other rock bands have sometimes had to lean on to add to their image.

The hall could evolve (I probably could - and would - make the case for Jack White), but the Foos are the last great "traditional" arena-type rock band in my mind.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

There have been bands who have felt like they're *going* to pick up the mantle, but none of them have any longevity yet.

Could you make a case for Coldplay? Weezer? Fall Out Boy or Panic at the Disco? Maybe.

And there *are* plenty of Juan Soto-style bands who are just fucking amazing right now but they've only been doing it for a short time -- The Struts are at the top of that list for me.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

Coldplay will likely garner support, but they've always struck me as derivative and cynical.

Weezer, I would consider to be pre-Foo, if only just. They're certainly a candidate, but they don't top my list.

And I agree that there are terrific bands out there, but I just want to see something that's music and not product blow up the charts again. I'm not sure it'll happen until Congress gets involved in the horrifically low rates streaming services pay artists. Until that happens, the only way to get rich is selling backpacks and other merch, and the recordings are just commercials for the larger brand.

I've come to loathe these yearly discussions. Not here, really just in general. A

better list/debate would be who to kick out of The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

You could start with Jay-Z who likely gets in next year. I kinda feel the same about baseball hall discussions.

Weezer feels like a nineties version of The Cars but without the sales.

There are still lotsa overlooked guys from the over-represented era I could make a case for (Midnight Oil--important, southern hemisphere's U2, worldwide 80s hit record, critical success, still holds up), Nick Lowe (multi-band performer and producer, practically invented new wave by himself, success across genres including country, roots-rock, and jazz in a distinguished late career, other musicians love him), Squeeze (critical darlings, hits that hold up, unique style, longevity), Rundgren (case made), Joe Jackson (talent, versatility, iconoclasm, hits and critical praise)

Many guys who got overlooked when the Hall reviewed their era have a tough time getting a second look. I'd like to see Lowe go in with Rockpile. Like Booker T. and the MGs, they made a lot of albums that didn't have their name on the cover. But I'd certainly take Lowe alone.

There are at least three bands that held the title of "Biggest Band in the World," if only briefly, but are nonetheless on the outside: Grand Funk, Wings, and B-52s. I'd be happy to honor any of them, although Wings is the only one I have a bee in my bonnet about. Along with many Bucket named, I'd advocate for Jonathan Richman, The Replacements, The Del Vikings, and The Monkees, and others.

I'm glad they are putting a few non-performers in this year, although it seems to be more about folks who are connected. I put up a list a year or two ago of about 50 non-performers who deserve serious consideration.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

Warren Zevon -- wrote terrific stuff,, sang, great live, was covered by many folks from different genres, played with and for others, and got his start as band leader for the freaking Everly Brothers fer crissakes.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

Warren Zevon started off as a writer for the "White Whale" label. He wrote for the "Turtles" and has a tune on the "Midnight Cowboy" soundtrack.

His first break was writing for Linda Ronstadt on "Hasten Down the Wind." and sending her off to stardom.

Truly the band savant for the "Everlys."

Warren gets bored without his own hit song and goes to Spain for a couple of years to "reflect".

He returns to LA and is produced by Jackson Brown & Waddy Wachtel

In his own right Wachtel is a band leader. He managed the Expensive Wino band for Keith Richards.

Well, "Excitable Boy" charts well, money is made and I wish it had a happier ending for Warren gone so young.

I miss live music so much. I felt like Jack White was the last musician on earth on SNL. Wasn't he terrific. Yabba!

How about the Pixies? Should they be considered a canonical band?

Pretty close, right? Not as seminal as, say, Sonic Youth, but a lot more good traxx, I think.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

I would take the Pixies over Sonic Youth. The Pixies are 34 years young and still going. Started in a college lounge basically. I can't stomach early Sonic Youth as I could not early no wave ala James Chance and the Contortions etc. I understand it's noise, but ugh.

Common theme of artists that have been considered snubbed, including many that are sacrosanct at least to me.

It is what happens when you open up induction for many genres that weren't thought of at inception.

Picture Jay-Z in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He has a terrific shot next go round. Better than Jeff Kent.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

(Almost) all worthy performers on the performer list. Jay-Z has always seemed like a phony to me, but what do I know. He had a lot of output and was Elvis big. His records were all different with creative production and sources. I was just underwhelmed with him at the center of them.

The "Musical Excellence Award" has too often been a way to get in guys we think we want in politically but can't seem to win on the ballot. At least this time two (or one and a half) of the three have a legacy built on being sidemen. I can't possibly apply that definition to L.L. Cool J, though. I mean, yeah, he guested on a terrible Brad Paisley record, but he's pretty much the definition of a frontman. If he can't get in under his own brand, then tough nuggies.

Play hardball, Hall.

Re: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Show & 2021

"Early influencers" should be limited to pre-1960 performers. Charlie Patton, sure but Gil-Scott Heron and Kraftwerk should be in or out on their ouevre not just on their influencing.

Tina Turner in for the second time (first time with Ike) and Carole King is already in for her songwriting.

Todd Rundgren is really the only one of the newbies that I think, yes he should be there.

Kraftwerk and GSH WERE early influencers, genre- and sound-wise. You could argue they've got farther reaching impact on today's popular music than Charley Patton-- or hell, Chuck Berry. Hell, you'd be right.

Sure, but you can honor them as performers with a wide influence without pretending they're "early."

If you're going to have a balloting system, alternative categories shouldn't be used to sidestep that system.

Imagine how proud Charley Patton must be, knowing he was paving the way for John Cougar, Bon Jovi, and Whitney Houston.

There are a lot of wonderful artists in the Hall, but seeing the place, and the list of inductees, just convinces me that there's no such thing as rock and roll.

Neither is Benatar. She had as many hit records, or more, than Joan Jett (with or without the blackhearts) and was one of the early MTV pioneers. What did she do/ not do to piss the voters off?
