I was actually surprised that everyone assumed he'd reject it. He didn't pitch in 2020 and there's expected to be a depressed market for free agents. Taking the guaranteed $18.9 million and trying again next year (he can never be QO'ed again) seems like the wise move.

Agreed. Wants to pitch in NY, ended his tenure on a sour note, wants to redeem himself with fans. Also getting nearly $19m coming off an injury so it's a good move for him. I like it. One piece filled in with others on the horizon.

He was unlikely to get that as a free agent. I thought it made sense for him to accept. $18M in the hand is much better than taking his chances in a year when teams are going to be conservative about money.

Fun Thought Experiment: Does this transaction get credited (or debited if it's a loser) to the account of the outgoing regime, under which the Q.O. was made, or the new regime, under which it was accepted? I guess I think Stroman should be treated as the runner on second who is still Brodie's responsibility, even after he's been pulled from the game.

Under the previous owners, this plus a Vargas-type would have been it for the rotation. For the new owner, it's only the beginning.

I suspect that Brodie extended the QO based on back-channel communications from Sandy Alderson. Sandy has pretty much confirmed that such messaging had been taking place.

Brodie will get none of the credit if Stroman works out and all of the blame if he doesn't. They key to this is that so far this offseason, the Mets have committed $27M to three pitchers who combined for -0.2 WAR last season. Now if Cohen's wallet is as bottomless as we hope, that's completely irrelevant. But if that were true, we also could have claimed Brad Hand and his $10M option and already be pretty close to set in the pen. We may want to revisit this if we get to spring training and don't feel the Mets got enough bang for their bucks.

I figured one of these woe-is-me billionaires would find 3 years, $50M (or MLBTR predicted 4 years, $68M). The Mets pitching was so gross last year, I hope they aren't content with just Stroman, but I'm happy he's back.

Well if we learned anything from last season, being content with just Stroman is a losing strategy. I figured two quality starting pitchers are a necessity, and Stroman is one.

It means he's replacing Matz at this time. Matz, unless and until the Mets non-tender him, heads back to the bullpen to replace Corey Oswalt.

Stroman is no where near a controversial, but pretty outspoken and sensitive himself. A lot of personality for someone who is a middle of the rotation guy. I can see a lot of fans turning on him if he doesn't have an ace-type year. (Which is not anything we should expect really).

A nice start to the off season. He should be a nice, solid #3 (o4 #4 starter) in the rotation. Now the Mets need to add another good , solid, proven starter and the rotation should be greatly improved. At least this off season, there is hope for Mets fans that the team will make serious attempts to address the roster needs .

Yeah to the extent he's a local guy and had success in the past I sorta like his outspokenness and CAHNfidence, but wish he'd earn some of that for us. I nearly let myself get tricked into buying he was going to have a good 2020 just based on the volume of his twittermouth. But this time it's really up to him to earn a future living
