Job Titles

Is anyone clear on the division of responsibilities between a Director of Baseball Operations and a General Manager?

My guess is that the GM reports to the DBO and is responsible for trades, signings, drafts, and roster moves.

So what does the DBO do? Does he manager the trainers, the stadium staff, the farm system, transportation?

And Sandy, as the boss of both of them, would also manage those who are responsible for public relations, ticket sales, advertising?

I'm just guessing here. If I'm right, it sounds like I should care more about who the GM is than the DBO, but I have no idea.

Also... I want to add Steve Cohen to the UMDB, but I haven't any confirmation anywhere of what his official title is with the Mets. Is it simply "Majority Owner"? Or is he a CEO?

Re: Job Titles

My guess:

Sandy Alderson, Team President: He is the CEO of the Mets, and all things Mets-related. The new Jeff, if you will. That includes vendors, issues with Citifield, licensing, etc. And, overseeing baseball operations.

President of Baseball Operations: Is in charge of the baseball side. Analytics reports to him, scouting reports to him. Is the guy that reports to Sandy, and with Sandy, will make the call on who to sign/trade etc.

GM: The guy that picks up the phone and talks to other GMs. The one that negotiates with agents. Does press-conferences, watches the waiver wire, Rule 5, etc.

Assistant GM: Not really sure, but as I posted a few years ago, if John Ricco is any indication, the job entails looking like you are perpetually caught off guard and trying to think of the right thing to say.

You want me to answer? Sure, I mean, Sandy's like right here, but yeah, I can totally answer this question.

Re: Job Titles

Before there were names there, the numbers on the back of uniforms originally represented the position they played.

How about the front office people get a number representing their titles and job responsibilities on the back of their shirts?
