Re: Cano Suspended for 2021

There's now a permanent home for Jeff McNeil (unless they want to go after D.J. LeMahieu) and J.D. Davis becomes more important (and less of a trade piece). Steve doesn't need the $ but they save $24M in salary, too.

Thanks so much, Brodie. Kelenick + Dunn for a RP that killed the Mets in '19 and Cano (2 more years beyond '20) looks better and better.

Can they double-fire Brodie?

The whole thing was a harebrained scheme motivated by desperation -- the Wilpons' desperation to make a last "win now" stand, knowing their days as owners were numbered. That's probably how BVW got the job, by playing to the Wilpons hopes that the Mets were no more than that season away from a title.

They should tattoo that trade on his forehead, so any prospective employer will know what they're getting. (A tattoo like that would most likely get him kicked out of his country club, too. Oh, the shame!)

Or do they fill the position internally with McNeil or Gimenez?

I wish they had a GM (I assume Sandy is acting in the role for now) and a decision on whether or not there will be a DH.

McNeil moves back to 2B full time. The lineup becomes less left-handed. Steve/Sandy have an extra $20 million to play with. One of the candidates for DH is off the table for 2021.

Sign Springer. Trade Davis/Gimenez for Lindor. Trade a low-level prospect to Colorado and take the Arenado contract off their hands.

1. Lindor - SS

2. Springer - CF

3. Smith - 1B

4. Arenado - 3B

5. Conforto - RF

6. Alonso - DH

7. McNeil - 2B

8. Nimmo - LF

9. Who Cares - C

Don't think there's ever been a case of this happening. The Yanx made noise about trying to do that when Giambi "apologized" (without ever saying what he was

apologizing for) and was coming off a suck/injured season with a whole lotta money still due. They got nowhere with it and then never brought it up again after

his hitting returned to form.

The whole testing/punishment rules were collectively bargained and I can't believe that the union would ever agree to even the possibility of allowing teams to

use a positive test as a way to negate contracts and earnings beyond the stipulated length of suspension. IIRC, Cano will even continue to accumulate ML service

time during his suspension. Not that service time will matter in his case but punishment on top of the punishment isn't something at the club's discretion.

I don't understand why a guy in his position takes this chance.

I can't condone, but understand the temptation, for the guys who are on the cusp of getting that one huge contract and being set financially for life. But Cano already had the contract and borderline Hall of Fame numbers. Now he's out $24 mill, loses a season to add to the counting stats and pretty much kills any Hall chances he had anyway.

Plus, he already got popped once. Did he think he wouldn't get caught a second time?

That's what Steinbrenner used to try and pull. He'd trade for some guy, not like his first outing or two, claim the other team withheld injury information from him, petition the

commish's office to void the deal, and then denounce the commish as "Anti-Yanqui" when he wouldn't listen.

btw, Trump & Steiny are so much alike it's almost surprising they weren't biological twins. They were pals to a certain extent and there's no doubt that if ol' George were still around

he'd be the Trump-iest supporter out there and would probably (again) pressure his employees to donate their money and then force them to lie about it if an investigation came up.

That (in the closing days of the Nixon era) was what got him his first suspension from the game.

I'm not aware of the history regarding such a potential move. And if this scenario was specifically contemplated and then prohibited in the CBA, then that's that -- the issue's settled. (I don't actually know what''s in the CBA about this, either). But beyond these possible obstacles, I think that, win or lose, the argument to void the entire remainder of the contract would be a valid one and not frivolous.

Addition by subtraction. In this market, that $20M goes a lot farther than a guy who hasn't produced an .800 OPS over more than 400 ABs since 2015 and is a defensive liability.

I wasn't even thinking about LeMahieu, but I am now.
