What will be your Election Night viewing option?

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 01 2020 11:35 AM

I don't have a favorite TV news source. In fact, I don't watch TV news.

So I don't know what channel I'll turn to on Tuesday night. In 2016 my wife selected MSNBC. She's no longer in the picture, and I feel like switching it up anyway especially given the way it turned out last time. Thanks a lot, MSNBC!

Where to go then? CNN? PBS? ABC? NBC? CBS? Certainly not FOX. The only broadcast news team I'm really familiar with is NPR, but I'm not going to sit in front of the TV listening to the radio.

I never had a steady 'go-to' choice either.

When I watch that sort of I tend to flip around and could wind up anywhere, at least for a short time anyway.

My wife has been DVRing Hallmark Christmas movies and will be watching them for as long as it takes.

I will be flipping back and forth between MSNBC and CNN. And I have lots of beer. We're not going to know who truly wins on election night, but we should have some leading indicators. And did I mention I have lots of beer?

I'm drinking Tuesday night too.

The only questions yet to be answered are how early I start and the reason why I start.

I think I may also have a 6-pack on Tuesday.

Re: What will be your Election Night viewing option?

I will probably let my wife pick - assuming it will be one of the major networks, based on that. And yes, there will be beers.

Re: What will be your Election Night viewing option?

Oh, it may END with beers. It'll likely start with highfalutin' tequila or midshelf bourbon, or some other such thing that makes me wince a little with each sip-- all the better to go with the squint/scowl-hybrid rictus I've been nursing for a few weeks.

Honestly, I might try my damnedest to program something else entirely (something stupid and giggly, most likely), and not crack a peek until the fam goes to bed around midnight. Even then... how the hell are networks going to work their exit-poll voodoo, given the proliferation of early voters and mail-in variants?

I can't watch election night telecasts, it's worse than eight hours of super bowl pregame.

I also don't think a clear winner will be available until like Wednesday afternoon sometimes.

Twitter. It provides all the highs and lows. All the freak outs and overconfidence. I follow a lot of Election Twitter which often dives down to what they see on a county by county level.

I'll probably have CNN/MSNBC on in the background.

You should definitely watch FOX - because once THEY call it for Biden you'll feel like its safe and you can go to bed.

Yeah, I will also be watching a glass of bourbon empty and be filled again, over and over.

Feel free to include Zoom among your viewing options. I've invited my real life friends as well, and both of them might show up.

I actually did this in 2008. For the schadenfreude, yes, but also for outside-the-bubble confirmation.

I read that several of their prime hosts are self quarantining because of the virus, so there may not be the group schadenfreude we would hope to see.

This. We're not going to learn anything tonight, one way or the other. I know my wife wants to watch, but I'll be in the other room playing OOTP or something instead.

I'm not so sure about that. If Texas or Florida or Ohio go for Biden (and we may find that out tonight) we'll definitely have learned something significant.

Same is true, to a lesser degree, of Arizona or North Carolina.

I've decided I'm going to check in about 8 (Jeopardy still takes preference) and see how things stand. Then I'll pick up my current book while keeping the tube on (doesn't really matter which channel) with the sound down just so I can see if anything blows up.

By 9 or 10 or so we should have a better idea of how things are going so I'll turn my attention to the TV and will have a better idea what I'm drinking to.

I'm nervous too, but there's no alcohol in my house, so I'll be relying on caffeinated beverages to get me through this.

This... seems unwise. Like, even hydrating yourself from the toilet seems better than amping yourself up and wearing circles in the floor.
