IENT (In Election Night Thread) - Trump vs Biden

Frayed Knot

I'm going into radio silence for the next couple of hours, but I couldn't bear the thought of real time progress reports and comments getting lost in the never-ending Politics thread.

I'll join later tonight ... at least if I'm not under the couch sobbing.

Trump campaign officials concerned about Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin

From CNN's Jim Acosta

Trump campaign officials are concerned about the crucial battleground states of Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin — but are feeling better about Florida, a senior Trump adviser said.

"Georgia could be an issue," the adviser said, pointing to huge vote totals from urban voters in the state. Michigan may be gone, the adviser said. Wisconsin is "TBD," according to the adviser.

REASON TO BE OPTIMISTIC: Hardly any votes from Philadelphia and Milwaukee are in. And Biden will likely win the election if he holds on to Arizona and wins any two of the following states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Re: IENT (In Election Night Thread) - Trump vs Biden

One detail that can matter: with 96% of the vote counted, Biden is ahead in Douglas County, Nebraska by 11 points. In 2016, Clinton carried it by 2. This means things are looking good for picking up the swing congressional district electoral vote. That plus Michigan, Wisconsin, and no major upsets in other blue states gives Biden the election. Without Pennsylvania. And the totals in Michigan and Wisconsin aren't meaningful yet given the lag in counting the major metros.

Supposedly the mail in ballots in PA skew incredibly heavily blue. So even though Trump's ahead by quite a bit, it may not last.

But taking AZ, NV, WI and MI gets Biden to 270 even without Pennsylvania. (He won the NE-2 congressional EV)

What worries me is that after all of the lies, corruption, idiocy and incompetence, MORE people will have voted for Trump in 2020 than voted for him in 2016. There's something broken with America, and I don't know how we fix it. Biden may win (not a given) but he'll be totally hamstrung. There's a lot the executive can do (or undo). But not taking the Senate is a killer.

The county level results make me feel pretty good. Most of the uncounted votes in NV, WI, and MI are from urban areas. And Biden outperformed Hillary just about everywhere in Michigan. Add better turnout to the mix, and it should be a narrow but clear win for the good guys. Clear enough that not even Amy Boney Carrot can save him.

So you're essentially saying that Trump can campaign out of the White House because he's the President; that the Hatch Act doesn't apply to the president. That's evil genius brilliant! But those targeted GOP senators would probably see through the ploy and reject the offer. That's sort of what Trump did, or tried to do to Merrick Garland: Trump offered Garland the head of the FBI job. Re: IENT (In Election Night Thread) - Trump vs Biden

All per 538. Not pasting the less rosy reports regarding Georgia & NC.

Michigan: Biden currently leads here by just 37,350 votes, but it will be difficult for Trump to close that gap because most of the uncounted ballots are in very blue Wayne County (Detroit). At 2 p.m. Eastern, Wayne said it had only 16,000 ballots left to count, which it plans to complete by 6 p.m.

Pennsylvania: Trump currently leads Biden 53 percent to 45 percent in Pennsylvania, but this one is a long way from over — 19 percent of expected votes are still uncounted, most of them Democratic-leaning mail ballots. Counties are working around the clock to finish counting, but we're looking at Thursday or Friday before results are semi-final.

Arizona: Biden currently leads here by 93,518 votes, but there are around 600,000 left to count, according to the Arizona Republic. About 450,000 of those are in Maricopa County, which says it will release two batches of results tonight: one at 9 p.m. Eastern and one sometime after 12:30 a.m. Eastern. Some outlets, such as Fox News, have already projected Arizona for Biden, but our colleagues at ABC News have not yet done so.

Nevada: Biden leads here by only 7,647 votes, and an estimated 14 percent of the vote is still uncounted. However, those votes will all be either late-arriving mail ballots or provisional ballots, which should lean Democratic. We won't be getting another update here until noon Eastern on Thursday.

A few hundred thousand mail-in ballots that the Associated Press's data people missed. Spread across the state. According to fivethirtyeight, Trump would need to win those ballots by 21 percentage points, which isn't impossible, but is highly unlikely.

How they missed them is an interesting question. But if I understood correctly, it was the media that missed them, not the vote-counters.

Fivethirtyeight believes that among the not yet called states, Biden has an even chance or better at all but NC. That would give him 306 EV, or exactly the amount Trump won in 2016, though two switched their vote to other Republicans.

Back to the Senate for a minute. In the Georgia special election, everyone knew there was going to be a runoff. But after adding up all the minor candidate percentages, the Republicans only received 1.1 percentage points more than the Democrats. In the regular Georgia election, Perdue has fallen below 50% of the vote with Dem-leaning votes left to be counted.

So it looks like two Georgia runoffs, both of which are tough but winnable. A lot can happen between now and January. The Senate isn't lost yet.

I guess Maine is gone. But I don't get why Gideon conceded so quickly. Collins is just barely above 50%, and the instant runoff votes probably lean heavily towards Gideon.

OE - updated GA count has Perdue with about 3000 votes above 50% with about 250K left to count.

I don't think that "conceding" carries any legal or official consequences. Gideon doesnt forfeit any rights by conceding. If the remaining uncounted votes swing Gideon's way enough to change the status quo, then that's what'll happen. Maine will still count all the votes.

One thing these guys on tv don't know but I can tell you right now...all those rural counties that aren't counted are going to be republicans

They're mentioning it, the good ones are anyway. What the analysis is trying to do at this point is

- see how many ballots are uncounted in the various counties,

- project how those will go based on how that county/area has gone so far,

- and then guesstimate that similar percentages will hold for the not-yet counted votes.

So, yes, Trump will likely pick up votes via mail-in votes from the more rural counties but urban centers have more of them to the point where Biden could gain enough fast enough to catch up.

Then there's the line of thinking that Dems this year used mail-in/absentee at a greater clip than Republicans and therefore Biden might gain votes at rates above where the in-person figures were,

so for ex. if Biden won Philadelphia County by 80/20 on Tuesday he might win the uncounted votes at a clip closer to 85/15 or 90/10

And based on where the known uncounted votes still are (more urban than rural) it's almost certain that he'll close the gap. The question is can he close it all the way.

oe: and the networks all employ their own analysts in these matters, guys who could be either more or less aggressive in projecting how the uncounted votes will fall; it's why they don't all call states

at the same time or even agree that it should be called at a particular time. It also doesn't matter how they call states really since they're not the ones who decide. On the other hand, if they all see

things the same way then it's a pretty good indication that that's how things will end up.

Yeah I'm on CNN and right after I said that they went into that...

Cool that CNN is reading the CPF :)

My totally sketchy numbers say the vice president needs:
•
Approximately 79% of the remaining 87,492 uncounted votes to win Alaska.

  •
Approximately 42% of the remaining 402,436 uncounted votes to win Arizona.

  •
Approximately 55% of the remaining 97,396 uncounted votes to win Georgia.

  •
Approximately 46% of the remaining 131,677 uncounted votes to win Nevada.

  •
Approximately 64% of the remaining 269,375 uncounted votes to win North Carolina

  •
Approximately 60% of the remaining 448,355 uncounted votes to win Pennsylvania.
  •
That may not be based on the most recent reported numbers you may have, but outside of Alaska, each of those looks do-able on my spreadsheet.

This surprises me, at least to a degree.

Suburban LI used to be fairly reliable Republican (60-40 -ish) but even so it was a moderate version of Republicanism -- kind of a holdover from the Rockafeller wing -- and even that was waning in recent years and decades (4 of 5 Reps are D I believe). And, yeah, while these results don't say good things about either of the two counties, at some point some of this is the Dems for not offering more attractive alternatives.

Re: IENT (In Election Night Thread) - Trump vs Biden

I am sitting in a hotel room where I have been since Tuesday watching the results trickle in seemingly vote by vote. I am quarantining after working the polls in person on Election Day. My wife and child cannot afford to be sick and both my boomer aged parents and my in-laws are in town and helping with the virtual learning that my daughter is doing since schools are closed. I have the flexibility and means to lock myself up for a few days and keep myself isolated from the ones I love. I'm feeling no symptoms and took a COVID test this morning. I should get the results in a day or two.

Back in the before times, I used to travel quite a bit for work and for pleasure. I am just now realizing how much political coverage of the past four years I have watched on a hotel TV screen. In March of 2016, I watched coverage of a black protester being punched by Trump supporters at a rally while staying in Denver for work. In July of 2016, I watched parts of the dark Republican convention from a hotel room in Vegas. Later that month, I saw Obama give his speech at the Democratic convention while in Chicago for another work meeting. I believe during that same stay, I saw Trump's "Russia, if you're listening..." press conference live. Traveling by car through Nebraska and Colorado in 2018, the news was wall-to-wall with the reporting of migrant children being separated from their parents and placed in cages. Last November, I took a trip to Los Angeles and during downtime, watched impeachment testimony from Gordon Sondland and Alexander Vindman on the hotel screen. I guess it is only fitting that I am watching the 2020 results hopefully inch towards a Biden victory in a tiny room with a giant TV.

As for election day, our precinct is small (about 2150 registered voters) and we were able to rent two ballot counting machines when typically we would only have one. This allowed election staff to process absentee/mail ballots all day while in-person voting utilized the second machine. In the end, we had 2007 ballots cast. Approximately 1350 of the ballots were processed absentee. Much like the rest of the state and the country, the ~800 in person voting broke about 450 to 350 in favor of Trump, but the ~1350 absentees went about 1100 to 250 for Biden.

Overall, my county (which is heavily Democrat) cast more votes for Biden than Clinton in 2016 or Obama in 2012. Overall, Joe got 75.5% of the vote here. Trump actually got 9000 more votes in our county this year than four years ago, but still got a smaller percentage of the overall vote. In total, Democrats saw a net gain of 34,946 votes between 2016 and 2020. In a state where the winning margin is going to be so slight, I am glad our little movement here was able to contribute. The national media will point to Milwaukee turnout and Trump erosion in the WOW counties, but much like the 2018 gubernatorial race and the state Supreme Court race earlier this year, Madison did its part.

I'm proud to be living in what is once again a blue state. When Scott Walker and Ron Johnson got elected in 2010, I was embarrassed, but when the state went for Trump in 2020, I was pretty devastated. Since then, We have kicked Walker out and flipped the Presidential results blue - even if it is by the smallest of margins. Personally, I'm going to get invested in the GA Senate runoffs and have pledged to do all I can to flip Johnson's Senate seat and maintain control of the governorship in 2022. Our state legislature is still pretty ratfucked, but it will take some time to undo that atrocity.

I've got the makings for a stiff drink when this thing eventually gets called. It was not the repudiation I was hoping for and the country is still very far apart when it comes to the urban/rural divide. I've got my fingers crossed that we can begin taking baby steps in the right (left?) direction. There are so many immediate needs that are not being addressed. But even the slim margins in this likely eventual victory give me a glimmer of hope.

    2. biden will give a bland soothing non-confrontational acceptance speech

    3. so will trump (just checking to see if u're paying attention or if the turned on retarded folks with erections is still mortifying u)

    4. isolated clashes with idiots with guns (they had a guy on tv yesterday - who looked like toad from american graffiti - who was carrying what looked to me to be a semi-automatic rifle and was calling for civil war....somebody should take that gun away from toad before he hurts himself)...

    5. lawyers makes lots of money and lose every case cuz they are so small they don't matter anyway

    6. trump will eventually slither away

    7. somebody will eventually remember that alaska is a state and award their three votes

    8. and about january the election will be official (and the kids in philly can have a sex party)....

and about 2023, sleepy joe will announce that gridlock is overrated and that he is stepping down...and murica will have its first female prez

    or not

46K to count in AZ, so Trump would need 63% of the remaining vote to win. He's doing well with the absentee votes, but not that well. Also, many of the remaining votes come from Pima County (Tucson), which is much more Democratic than the Phoenix metro.

Not that it matters. The EC is meaningful only because the Constitution tells us it is. Now that Biden's cleared the hurdle, it doesn't matter much whether he gets 2000 more votes or 2000 less votes than Trump in AZ.

Trump loathing pranksters make Trump staffers cry. Good!

Trump campaign shuts down 'voter fraud' hotline after it's flooded with prank calls

    Excerpt:

President Donald Trump's campaign has shut down its “voter fraud” hotline as it struggles to put forward any shred of evidence to support its claims of wrongdoing during the election. After a week of receiving supposed tips from voters that could help prove their claims, it seems that the campaign did not think it was worth it to keep the phone lines open anymore and is instead directing people to fill out a form online. A main reason for shutting down the hotline was because it was flooded with prank calls.

Numerous reports over the past few days noted that a viral campaign on TikTok and Twitter encouraged people to flood the hotline with prank calls and many did just that. The Trump campaign blamed Democrats. “The DNC is spamming our voter fraud hotline to bog down the thousands of complaints we are receiving!” Eric Trump said in a tweet. “Wonder what they have to hide.”

It seems receiving those calls was traumatizing for some Trump staffers who were told to answer the phones in what one worker characterized as the “room from hell.” Low-level campaign workers were ordered to just sit there and listen to the calls that included lots of pranks such as people impersonating public figures and making fart noises, but also death threats. Amid all the prank calls and threats, staffers said they probably received one actual tip they could use every three to four hours. “It's misery. It's one of the worst ways to end a campaign that you could think of,” a staffer tells the Daily Beast. That staffer said the calls were so traumatizing that they had to go to the bathroom to cry.

The campaign shut down the hotline at a time when its legal strategy to contest votes also appears to be faltering. There have been so many lawsuits filed in swing states that no one really knows how many there are, but it does seem clear the vast majority of them are failing miserably as judges chastise lawyers for presenting cases based solely on speculation with nothing to back up their claims. “They're throwing the kitchen sink against the wall to see what sticks — a mixed metaphor that's deserving of this legal strategy. And ‘legal strategy' should be in quotes,” Ben Ginsberg, a veteran Republican election law attorney, told Politico.

Yes, he is still going to lose. He trails by 14k+ votes in Georgia - they just found 2600 votes from a Republican-leaning county that were never counted! This netted about 800 Trump votes - seems like a good enough reason to recount, but it wont help him.

Yeah, recounts rarely net more than a few hundred votes shifting one way or the other and he'd have to flip thousands in each state he's contesting. That simply ain't happenin'

And in the end it still won't shut him up because he'll complain, just as all conspiracy theorists do, that the lack of evidence just demonstrates how deeply the evidence is being hidden. After all, he still insists that he won the popular vote last time.

So the end game seems to be- throw as much shit at the wall as you can, complain that the election was stolen even though you lack any evidence, and refuse to concede. I have no idea what the Inauguration is going to look like, but I'm betting Trump won't be there. (no great loss)

The talk of him running in 2024 is just a way to grift and to stay in the conversation. It does lock down all the Trump 2.0 wannabes like Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley and Kristy Noem for the foreseeable future, though.

As far as actually doing the job of being president, Trump seems to have checked out. COVID cases are spiking all over the country and this administration is sitting on its hands, apparently wishing for complete disaster. Dangerous times.

Over the weekend, Giuliani and his own team of lawyers, which also includes Trump campaign legal adviser Jenna Ellis, attempted what was described to ABC News as an internal campaign "coup"— an attempt to wrestle power away from the current longstanding Trump campaign leadership by claiming the president had given them full control moving forward, multiple sources said.

Oh, that vague Constitution. It's not clear whether a US Senator qualifies as a civil officer who is thus, subject to impeachment. But under Art.1, Sec. 5, the Senate itself may remove or expel any of its members with a 2/3 vote.

Since 1789, 15 senators have been expelled by this method.

And all who have been expelled met their fate by 1862, and most because they were Confederate supporters.

Since then, in a foreshadowing of the fecklessness of the Senate as an enforcement body, dozens have faced expulsion hearings (poor Reed Smoot), but none of have been expelled, though some have pulled a Nixon and resigned rather than face the vote.

The silver lining in Brian Kemp's defeat of Stacey Abrams in Georgia's last gubernatorial election is that Kemp is no longer Georgia's Secretary of State. Otherwise, Biden would have never, ever, not even for a millisecond, have had a lead over Trump. Kemp would've carried out the GOP's worst instincts, as announced by the scumbag Georgia Republican US Senators and Graham, cheating and ratfucking the election to ensure that Trump carried Georgia.

I like the idea of California splitting into five states, four blue and one red. There are a few other similar changes that can help. And I'm sure the goal isn't so much the expectation of a different result, or even to engineer a different result, so much as it is to leave behind the impression that they were screwed, and so leave their supporters with the position that any Biden presidency is, by definition, illegitimate, and its authority need not be acknowledged.

That abstain vote was probably as vile as a no vote.

My understanding is that the Michigan election canvassers who voted today at the State level did not have discretionary authority to vote "no".They were obligated to certify the county election results. So abstaining was about the worst that an obstructionist Republican could have done. Which one did.

If the GOP followed the dirty Trump playbook, they'd steal the election. They'd raise challenges in every state that could swing the election, no matter how frivolous or absurd their grounds, without shame. The nicety nice Dems would do no such thing. Instead, the Dems would simply play defense. And the GOP would steal the election because it would only have to flip one state, while the Dems would have to successfully defend every single state under GOP attack. The GOP controlled courts and state legislatures would go along because unlike now, they wouldn't have to overturn the will of the voters in numerous states by disturbing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of votes.

So I'm guessing this is, you know, illegal.

President Trump called Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Saturday to pressure him into overturning Joe Biden's win in the state, according to The Washington Post. During the call, just hours before an upcoming Trump rally in Georgia, the president asked Kemp to convene the state legislature for a special session to appoint Electoral College electors who might be more friendly to him than the broader population, which elected Biden by a margin of more than 12,000 votes. Kemp rejected the president's plea, a source familiar with the conversation said.

Cody Hall, Kemp's spokesman, confirmed the conversation to the Post, while Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh declined to comment. The Post adds that Trump also urged Kemp to demand an audit of absentee ballots—which Kemp has said he lacks the authority to do, albeit not for lack of trying.

Denying the election results and calling them fraudulent is part of a plan to implement drastic voter suppression efforts starting next year (or starting this year, in Georgia). The cry will be that we need to restrict early voting and mail-in voting and demand the kind of ID's that poor black folk or students won't have, all in the name of preventing a tidal wave of fraud like we just had in the presidential election.

The fact that we actually had virtually no fraud in the presidential election is utterly and completely beside the point.

    From the academia.com website:
Treason is the violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or state, giving aid to enemies, or levying war against one's state. Sedition is encouraging one's fellow citizens to rebel against their state, whereas treason is actually betraying one's country by aiding and abetting another state.

Former Donald Trump adviser Michael Flynn has urged the president to use the military to force an election "rerun" in the swing states he lost to Joe Biden in November.

The former national security adviser said in an interview with Newsmax on Thursday that there is “no way" the US is going to be able to “move forward as a nation” unless Mr Biden's win is overturned and suggested Mr Trump seized voting machines, the subject of numerous right-wing conspiracy theories.
