We Make a Pretty Good Team: Biden's Cabinet (split from Politics 2020)

And Biden selects Tony Blinken, someone of competence and experience, as his secretary of state nominee. As a bonus, he's not an oil executive, party hack or family member.

Mr. Blinken has an enormous job ahead of him rebuilding world trust and the department itself, both of which have been gutted these past four years.

Connecticut Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona is your nominee for Secretary of Education.

The Secretary of Funk position is still open and I'm sitting by the phone.

I'm thinking this whole "Team of Rivals" thing that fellow progressives and I hoped for and seemed to talk ourselves into may have been... something of a stinky, brown bill of fare.

Re: We Make a Pretty Good Team: Biden's Cabinet (split from Politics 2020)

I'm beginning to wonder if he holds back on the Attorney General announcement until after the Georgia Senate races. If the Democrats win, there might be a different candidate than if the Democrats lose. Sally Yates if they win, Doug Jones if they lose. Yates is a better candidate but Republicans will never forgive her for crossing Trump on the Muslim ban. Jones, as a former senator, would probably have an easier ride.

Biden can't have a team of progressives even if it's a 50-50 Senate. It's the art of the possible.

If the Dems sweep Georgia and get a 50-50 +1 Senate majority, they should turn that into a 52-50 majority. DC's statehood should be among the very first orders of business.

It should be. Which means that Democrats aren't going to do it because "unity with a strong Republican Party" is top priority.

Which the Dems should also shitcan but are too cowardly. Because then they'd have no excuse for failing to pass legislation that benefits their constituents but angers their donors.

I don't know what's happening in the Senate, but Delagate Eleanor Holmes-Norton's DC statehood bill is going before the House Oversight and Reform Committee in a few weeks. It has the support of committee Chair Congressmwoman Carolyn Maloney and Majority Leader Congressman Steny Hoyer. The bill has 212 co-sponsors, so get out your support.

Now back to the cabinet.

WH official states the Neera Tanden nomination for OMB Director will be withdrawn.

Good. Tanden has dedicated her career to aiding corporate interests and trashing everyone who is even slightly to the left of the Clintons. Republicans should love her. The fact that she was appointed by a Democrat is a problem. Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to Biden that the era of reaching out to the right so far you fall on your face is over.

That their objection was nominally a matter of politesse is hilarious/infuriating. I'd LOVE to see Biden name a crazy-polite, CRAZY-progressive replacement.

He won't, of course, because he's more irritated by the left wing of the party than he is by, say, Joe Manchin or Susan Collins or John Kennedy.

Re: Politics 2021

The more I think about it, maybe Manchin wasn't the only Dem no on Tanden. Otherwise, I feel Biden should have made them vote to put Manchin on record (as well as Bernie, Murkowski, Sinema). I keep reading that Biden doesn't have any leverage on Manchin, but having him on record as opposition would be something tangible.
