Welcome right-handed RP Trevor May!

From Fangraphs:

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2021-top-50-free-agents/

[BLOCKQUOTE]Most of May's numbers aren't eye-popping, but his 40% strikeout rate in 2020 really jumps out. His velocity has steadily increased over the years, now sitting in the upper-90s. Even at 31 years old, there's a sense that his best seasons might still be ahead of him. The home runs are a bit frustrating, but if he can keep hitters missing and stay healthy, he's the second-best reliever in this free agent class.

Player Notes

At a glance, May's 1.9 HR/9 ratio looks far more alarming than his strikeout surge looks encouraging. Small samples often have a distortive effect though, and that's the case here as well. While May's cartoonishly high 21.7% HR/FB ratio will undoubtedly regress in short order, the substantial increase in whiffs he generated looks legitimate. He reared back and found an extra tick on his fastball last season, and hitters missed the pitch more than 20% of the time. Life gets a whole lot easier when your fastball can carry the profile.

Three consecutive seasons of good-if-not-quite-great relief work should put May in line for a multi-year deal worth around $10 million per, give or take how excited front offices are about his four-seamer. The pandemic will likely eat into that figure though, and so it'll be interesting to see if May values the stability of a longer contract or would rather roll the dice and hit free agency after 2021. As the valedictorian in Kelso High School's class of 2008, I trust him to arrive at the right answer.[/BLOCKQUOTE]

Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

Looks like a good enough get.

I've been to Kelso, Washington. Unfortunately, that doesn't give me much inside information about Trevor May.

That happened quickly.

Seems a good get, though-- and I'm probably being silly here-- I'd feel a wee bit more comfortable we took care of our engine issues before spending on luxe spare tires.

He will be reunited with new Mets pitching coach Jeremy Heffner, who coached him when they were both with the Twins.

Ha. Some of his fastballs had that Gingergaard-y look to them, IIRC.

Scratch that. That's old-regime, stinking thinking. Good get, no equivocation.

He seems to have that deGrom disease, where he has TJ, then gains velocity progressively into his early 30s. I almost feel like we could use a screwballer or two to top off this pen, given all the fastball-slider flameboys we're featuring these days.

I thought the same thing, thinking it was Dustin May.

Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

It looks like a pretty good pickup. Usually set-up guys aren't the first players off the board, so I get the feeling the Heffner connection mattered and he wanted to come here.

Gave up more homers than you might like for a relief guy but over the last 3 years pretty good

I think the question is ... Will Trevor succeed?

And the answer, of course, is ... Trevor may!

Now that horseshit is out of the way, this really adds to the pile of roster commitments in the pen, and could be a strong indicator of the end of the line for Matzenberg.

Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

May wears #65 (I guess because he's 6'5") but he'll have to ask Gsellman for the number (if Gsellman is a Met next season).

Wait, so is this guy like, good?

Yes. And, unlike the previous administration, the Mets didn't wait until all the good ones were gone before taking a leftover at a reduced price.

He is .. at least he is to the extent that you can know anything about relievers.

If signing Trevor May is enough for an erection we had all better keep our distance when Realmuto or Springer signs...

I don't know if the Mets return with Gselly in 2021, but he's got #65 for a cool and unique reason, and I hope he keeps it.

How he became a strikeout star (from mlb.com):

By the numbers.

Did his (Zoom) introduction conference today, after a physical in Queens yesterday.

Getting a little seasonally-apropos Frank Costanza: this guy... this IS [URL=https://twitter.com/_beewilly/status/1334558638162194438?s=19]my kinda guy.

[BLOCKQUOTE]when Trevor May was in New York getting his physical, he stopped by a sandwich shop in Queens. he bit into a chicken cutlet sandwich and said he realized "this is where I was meant to be."[/BLOCKQUOTE]

Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

I'm wondering if the Mets regret signing May. His $8M could come in handy right now with a lot of holes to fill. And of all of our needs, I'm not sure RH relief pitcher was all that high. Too late now, but just thinking out loud.

Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

$10M for Familia, $7M (among other things) for Diaz, $6M for Betances because somebody thought offering a player option in what should have been a "prove it" contract was a good idea, $2m for Brach for the same reason, plus arbitration for Lugo, Gsellman, Castro, and even Jacob Barnes, that's already 3 more righty relievers than you even want. If May is a better investment than anything Brodie concocted, I'm not going to complain about his signing so much. But the possibility exists that Brodie's tenure is continuing, and will continue, to hold the team back.

Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

I've read that the Mets have a couple of deals in place that would divest them of Familia and Betances if they want to shed some additional salary. They can also trade or release Matz. I have no idea how long a shelf life those Familia and Betances deals might have.

Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

The guy on the ABC-TV NY station just said the Mets are reportedly still in on Trevor Bauer AND Chris Bryant!

But he mentioned "sources" say that, without any other info.

So , grain of salt, etc., etc.

Fair point... but point of order: we don't need lefty relievers; we need relievers who are effective against left-handers. (To wit: May is more effective-- if marginally-- against lefties over his career, as are available righty relievers Trevor Rosenthal and Alex Colome.)

Edgy MD
Jan 25 2021 08:21 PM
Re: May I Interest You In Trevor?

Also more effective against lefties (to different extents): Edwin Diaz, Smeth Lugo, Dellin Betances.
