Wait what are we counting?

It would appear to be the last 50 days of this presidency by marking each day by a state in the reverse order that they joined the union — or the day corresponding to their joining order.

So the 50 days left gets a salute for the Aloha State, Benny Agayani, Sid Fernandez, Tyler Yates, Ron Darling, Steve McGarrett, Thomas Magnum, The USS Arizona, Don Ho, etc.

Given Redford's long association with Utah, I assumed that Butch & Sundance or especially Jerimiah Johnson were shot at least partially in the Beehive state.

But no, California and Arizona according to UMDB. I guess both movies were prior to him getting super rich and buying up large swaths of that state.

So anyway, onward we march.

#40 [FIMG=400]https://gisgeography.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/South-Dakota-Map.jpg[/FIMG]

North Dakota is just like South Dakota only with worse weather. The alternative name for it is South Saskatchewan.

In fact it's so anonymous that most of you probably didn't even notice that I posted a map of South Dakota here.

It's also the Trumpiest state of today's trio: 65.4% which was up from a mere 62.9%

Between him starring at USC and coming up with the Giants, I guess I just always associated him with being a Californian and

had no idea that not only was he born in Oregon but went to HS in Illinois where I'm betting he cratered a few lakes back in

the day.

So why is Iowa being represented by a bunch of bicycles? Because the biggest (approx 10,000 riders) and oldest (every year from 1972 until Covid-canceled in 2020) annual

cross-state bike ride is in, of all places, Iowa. Plus a whole buncha years ago I did that ride and if the chips fall right I just may do it again in Summer 2021.

And those guys are riding past cornfields.

Hal Trosky, who of course hit from the left side, is the Hawkeye state's leading HR hitter (228).

Trosky is from the small town of Norway, Iowa (yes, named by an immigrant for his home country ... lots of Scandinavians in Iowa) but the really odd thing about Norway, Iowa

is that it's a really small town -- posting a population of 545 in the 2010 census -- but Trosky is just one of Three major leagues who sprung from Norway High School a list

which also includes Mike Boddicker [1980-93, mostly for Balt & BoSox] and Bruce Kimm [1970s catcher and later managed the Cubs for part of 2002].

And remember it's not the HS that has 500-some people in it, it's the whole town that has that many.

You ever notice not just how proud Texans are of being from Texas but how quickly and how often they'll remind you that they're from Texas?

I mean, where else but in Texas (and in Irving, Texas no less, home of them Cowboyyyys!!) would someone build a golf course with the green

in the shape of Texas next to a water hazard playing the part of the Gulf of Mexico and an Oklahoma-shaped sand trap. I suspect a sand trap

is what Texans tend to think of Oklahoma in general only here it's just more literal.

I imagine the locals who play that course have a good time talking about how the pin placement is near Houston today, or how tough it was

last week to nab a birdie when you land on the green near Galveston on a day when the flag was all the way over near El Paso.

So without further ado, I give you #28 on our countdown. Just four weeks to go now ... even if he still doesn't think so.

When I was a kid I once tried to 're-draw' the states so as to make them more logical and in doing so I ceded the Upper Peninsula to Wisconsin because it didn't make sense

to me that one state would be in two pieces especially when one of those pieces was attached to a different state.

But maybe there is some logic in the two-part state having a tie in their all-time HR race. Native sons Kirk Gibson and John Mayberry both clocked 255 round trippers.

I know we're supposed to be focusing on the state here, although the state was named for the river rather than the other way around

and just check out the chunk of the country that's part of the river drainage area. Toss your rubber duckie into not just one of the

major tributaries shown but any stream, crick, or drainage ditch which feeds into them and, given enough time, your duckie will be

floating past the port of New Orleans at some point.

I remember being in the stands for Piazza's post-9/11 HR and telling people afterward, 'Hell no I didn't know for sure it was

going out ... with Andruw Jones out there I don't even consider a base hit to be safe until I see the ball bounce at least twice.'

I had similar reservations at the end of WS Game 7 2001: I had to see the winning run score, watch the celebration, witness

the trophy presentation, and even then I waited until after I woke up the following morning and read it in the papers before

    finally accepting it.

There's a saying about Tennessee actually being three individual states separated by music. The western part, dominated by Memphis, is the

home of the blues; mainstream Country is king in the central part in and around Nashville; the eastern mountains is where Bluegrass was born

    and still lives.

It's really too small (and funny shaped) to be a state all by itself so I'm not sure why a military strike wasn't launched at some point in order to make this state into

eastern Connecticut; y'know, like a Russia/Crimea type of thing. I think the Nutmeggers could have totally kicked the Rhodies collective ass although maybe they

figured they already had enough political corruption and didn't need to import any more.

Paul Konerko and his 439 !! is that state's leading HR hitter although he grew up in Arizona because I don't think R.I. is big enough to host any baseball fields.

I've always associated Willie Horton with Detroit even prior to his playing career. And by the time he went to HS he did live there, part of the great migration no doubt, but it turns out

he was born the youngest of 21 children in a little dot of a coal mining town in the very southwest corner of Virginia near where VA and Tennessee and Kentucky all meet and thus

holds the state record for career HRs w/325

The problem with using a natural feature as your state's symbol is that natural features change over the years. In the case of New Hampshire the boulders making up the ‘Old Man of the Mountain'

just came crashing down one day back in 2003, despite years of preventive maintenance designed to keep them up, and so it doesn't exist anymore despite NH's continued use of it on coins, road

signs, and various other state decals.

Phil Plantier (91) holds the native HR record making him one of four record holders from the six NE states who have Red Sox connections.

I would have guessed Mike Bordick to be Maine's all-time HR record holder. Turns out that he went to school and college there, but was born in Michigan.

It also turns out that, even if he had been born in Maine, he still would have only shared the lead with Plantier, at 91.

Some girl named Ruth from Baltimore holds the MLB record for HRs by Maryland natives.

Jimmie Foxx, I just discover, was also from Maryland (a little speck of a town of Sudlersville on the Eastern shore)

so for several decades the two leading HR hitters in the whole sport hailed from the same state.

Mo Vaughn, born in Norwalk, is the state's all-time leading HR hitter with 328, 29 as a NYM

Big Mo joins Phil Plantier (NH), Carlton Fisk (VT), and Jeff Bagwell (MA) as leaders from the six NE states to have Boston Red Sox connections.

Fittingly, today's countdown hits the state of Joe Biden's birthplace (Scranton). In fact, Joe is so old that I think he and Billy Penn were classmates in school.

And speaking of bros from the same hood, Ken Griffey Jr. not only keeps Stan Musial out of the top spot in HRs by a Pennsylvanian, he puts Stan the Man in second

place when it comes to HRs in his own hometown. Both Griffey (Jr. & Sr.) and Musial were born in the western PA town of Donora. That's 1,257 HRs from just

three guys!! Must be something in the water.

Pennsylvania, btw, is still in 2nd place when it comes to the number of major leaguers produced. When my dad got a copy of the very first Baseball Encyclopedia, I

learned that Pennsylvania had produced the most major leaguers. It has long since been passed by California but, surprisingly to me anyway, not yet by either Texas

or Florida. And it still boasts an impressive array of HR leaders: 1) Griff Jr (630); 2) Reggie Jackson (563); 3) Musial (475); 4) Mike Piazza (427) ; 5) Dick Allen (351)

If you want to post a YouTube video, simply paste the entire link to the video and it should play. That's it. No more need to format or use those bracketed YouTube boxes.

Those links you tried, unsuccessfully, don't appear to be YouTube links.

That's not a YouTube link. That's a Yahoo search link. You have to go to the YouTube web site and pull up the video from there. That should give you the YouTube link.

The iconic Cannonball Run race across the US begins at New York City's Red Ball Garage and ends at the Portofino Hotel in Los Angeles ... speeding on regular interstates, defying legal speed limits.

For years, the record hovered around 31 hours. In the last decade, people brought real tech innovation to the effort and brought it down in the 26 hour range. At the beginning of the pandemic, however, a lapse in traffic allowed several teams to make real assaults on the record and it fell three times in the Spring. In May 2020, Arne Toman and Doug Tabbut raced a modified Audi A6 across the country in 25 hours and 39 minutes, an average of 110 miles per hour.

If they took off right now, by the time they arrived in Los Angeles, Joe Biden would be President.
