Charitable Cranepoolers 2k20

Thanks, fman, for the reminder on this! We are close to 20 years running in this fine tradition (if only there were archives where I easily confirm this type of thing). Anywho, 2020 has been particularly crappy for a lot of people, some of us included, I'm sure. Would you like to do this again? As purse strings seem to be tighter than normal for most folks, please don't feel any obligation.

If there are any newbs who want to participate (there are no new people, I'm sure), just shout for the layout of the gift exchange.

I will double my donation if it's for an organization that gets four stars on Charity Navigator.

Thanks to the twists and turns that my life has taken in the last couple of years, I find myself happily in love with a woman with MS, so this charity is particularly meaningful to me.

I'll go local and give a lucky Cranepooler the opportunity to get more Cleveland in their lives. The May Dugan Center does a lot of great work in my not-quite-completely-gentrified neighborhood and in the city in general. Every Wednesday morning since COVID began shrinking the economy, I've been able to look out my living room window a quarter mile from the center and see cars backed up waiting to get to their weekly food bank. They can use some help. And they are indeed a 501(c)(3).

Thank you, again, for your support that will get us one step closer to a world free from cancer. We are proud to have you by our side as we look ahead to another 10 years of progress against this disease.

[BLOCKQUOTE]Dear ,

Thank you for your contribution ensuring that the ALS community will continue to receive our uninterrupted vital services, and for becoming a leader in the fight against ALS during this unprecedented time. Covid19 forced our organization to operate in many new ways, it also presented us with a unique opportunity to broaden our horizon and expand our operations and programs.

Your generous support will help us to provide comprehensive, quality care to people living with ALS. Our wide range of services include: multidisciplinary centers, equipment loan, transportation, support groups, educational programs, home visits, and respite care - all at no cost to the patient or their family. These services can help relieve the physical, emotional, and financial stress patients and families often endure.

Your gift is also a valuable investment in progressive research that brings us closer each and every day to finding a cure and effective treatment for this devastating disease.

Once again, thank you for your support and commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of people with ALS.

Re: Charitable Cranepoolers 2k20

My employer, as I mentioned, had a raffle for all employees. Each $25 donated to any 501(c)(3) charity earned the donor an entry to win one of three excellent prizes -- a new laptop valued at $1000, a 65" TV, or a $1000 AmEx gift card.

Their deadline to donate was Monday, December 21st.

Based on that, I picked the first 10 charities in this thread that has a fairly easy place that I could verify their 501c3 status, and donated $25 to each of them.

Because they're all good causes and because that raffle was a nice incentive, and I figured that way the name I drew would likely be one I had already donated to. (It was, email text below). My own family was fortunate this year - no one we are close to got sick or died from Covid, I saved money by working from home all year, my wife continued to work, and we were able to salt away a good amount of funds what with so many of our favorite leisure activities being closed or impractical.

I did not win any of the prizes in my company raffle. I also don't really care that I didn't win. It feels good to give, especially around the holidays.

The full list of charities I donated to:

Ronald McDonald House of Central PA

Partners in Health

May Dugan Center

Tisch MS Research Center of NY

Doctors Without Borders (somehow I signed up for a monthly donation, which I'll have to cancel at some point this week)

I think that too.

There wasn't any down side to me giving to a bunch of charities that are dear to my friends here.

I'll vouch for Cleveland, too -- despite running one of my slowest marathons ever there (a 4:39 in brutal 80+ degree heat in May 2019), I got a warm fuzzy vibe from the many spectators along the route. I hope to come back and run it again and have it not be a shitfest of a weather day, ideally.

Re: Charitable Cranepoolers 2k20

Mets fans are better people on average. Most cities have only one team, so the good people and the wankers all root for the same team. New York has one team that is a wanker magnet and one that isn't. So the MFYs serve the very important function of lowering the wanker quotient among Mets fans.

The marathon route used to go past my house, but it was rerouted a few years ago because some of the local yuppies (speaking of wankers) whinged about not being able to drive outside the neighborhood for a few hours on a Sunday morning.

On their way to big box stores to buy stuff they didn't need, no doubt

Ha! I hadn't checked in the the Pool in a few weeks so I didn't know I'd been assigned Dressember, but I did in fact donate to sponsor seawolf already!
