Not only did they lose to Charlotte, but Spencer Dinwiddie partially tore his ACL in the second half.

I knew things looked too good.

Now Caris Levert will have to move up from sixth man leading the second team to first team.

I don't like giving up Allen and LeVert - it leaves the team with no center and no depth. (And no good young guys)

And 4 picks? Even though they are swaps, didn't they learn anything from the disasterous trade with the Celtics?

I'll buy the bright side outlook.

Superstars typically continue to play at a superstar level at age 31 and 32—the seasons that matter to Brooklyn now, as Harden is under contract for this season and next (plus a player option in 2022-23). They drop off at the ages the Nets called upon Garnett and Pierce.

Re: Brooklyn Nets 2020-21

The Nets, of course, are an experiment. This is true in the moment, in a roster with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, James Harden and now Blake Griffin, four men chasing rings and personal fulfillment; in the education of first-year coach in Steve Nash, the former MVP-turned-vibe master; in the quest to win a championship while playing minimal defense. They are a team of brilliant stars and iconoclastic charm, assembled in the media hothouse of New York, unleashed during a raging pandemic, performing on the fly in mostly empty arenas, the perfect encapsulation of the modern NBA: a super team with stars who bullied their way together, a front office that saw itself as a startup and acted accordingly, a brand that exists as compelling internet content despite questionable emotional investment, a team that could — despite it all — win a title in an era when rings are the only metric that matters.

Overall a little anthropological in tone and a bit condescending at base, but still a compelling Nets read.

A happy shout-out to ex-Net Caris LeVert for making it back from renal carcinoma.

https://www.aol.com/pacers-caris-levert-scores-13-144348160.html

Less than two months after having cancer surgery, Caris LeVert of the Indiana Pacers was back on the court Saturday night, and he even contributed to the Pacers' 122-111 win over the Phoenix Suns.

LeVert, 26, had surgery in January to remove a small cancerous mass on his left kidney, but made his miraculous return to basketball Saturday night with 13 points and six assists in 27 minutes. While LeVert admitted to ESPN that he struggled with "heavy legs," he was more focused on just being out there and playing again.

Re: Brooklyn Nets 2020-21

The appearance of a Dr. J Nets piece, like this one by Harvey Aragon, generally means things are going terribly or terrifically. Glad it's the latter for a change.

Kevin Loughery and Julius Erving share a city, Atlanta, a golf club and an emotional connection to a basketball allegory told inharmoniously in three distinct parts — what was, what might have been and what now has become.

In other words: the history of the Nets, from Long Island to New Jersey to Brooklyn.

Inevitably, wistfully, Loughery's conversation with Erving centers on Part 2, the potentially grand Nassau Coliseum stage that was dismantled just before the curtain was to rise on the N.B.A. debut of Erving and the Nets.

“I always talk to him about what we might have done,” Loughery, who coached the developing legend of Dr. J. to two A.B.A. titles and stayed on to guide the remains of the Nets after the financially troubled franchise sold the rights to Erving, the world's most electrifying player, to the Philadelphia 76ers on the eve of the 1976-77 season.

Loughery added in a telephone interview: “What haunts you is that when we had him in the A.B.A. he was the best he ever was. The last A.B.A. series against Denver, when we won that second title, that was the best series I've ever seen anyone play.”

Re: Brooklyn Nets 2020-21

Kristian Winfield breaks it down in the News.

Blake Griffin jokingly took credit for The Play. In his defense, it was his wild behind-the-back pass that set the tone for showtime in Brooklyn.

“Listen, I don't like to pat myself on the back, but I did get that thing started,” Griffin deadpanned, before conceding: “I don't want to take credit for it. Those guys did it. I was just kind of orchestrating from behind.”

The Cavaliers had an offensive breakdown to end the second quarter with the ball slipping out of Damyean Dotson's hands, off of former Net Jarrett Allen, almost out of bounds. Cavs forward Cedi Osman raced to save the ball, grabbed it with one hand, off-balance, and launched it out to the three-point line.

That's where Nets guard Mike James inserted himself into the play, knocking the live jump ball out of Cavs forward Dean Wade's hands, right to Griffin.

“You can see that play forming. It felt like it was laid up on a platter for us,” Durant said. “We got a good stop, good deflection, Blake was able to get it out quick … and then boom.”

Griffin caught the ball with one hand, spun, then with the same hand, threw a behind the back pass up the floor to start a Nets fast break.

“I tried to just get it out of my hands as fast as possible,” he recalled, “and those guys did the rest.”

Kyrie Irving cut across the middle of the floor and picked off Griffin's wild pass, then touch-passed it to Mike James who then made the decision of a lifetime. Instead of laying the ball up over one defender, or throwing a regular pass, or even a regular alley-oop to the trailing Durant, he threw a pass off the backboard. In a real game. With playoff implications. Only up nine points.

“My instinct was to throw it off the glass, but I think I was a little bit nervous,” he said. “If it would have been bad, I think my Nets career would have been over, but it worked out for me.

“Kev caught it, and it worked.”

Durant caught the pass and flushed it with two hands. Nets head coach Steve Nash said they couldn't have possibly practiced alley-oops off the backboard because there isn't enough time in-between games for teams to have real, active practice time, and when they do find it, off-the-glass alley-oops are not on the agenda.

Durant also said there was no real signal from James to know the ball was going off the glass.

“Mike is such a smart player. I think he saw me before he even caught the ball,” Durant said. “And I gave him a quick look and I saw him glance back at me. And that's all you really need.”

The whole thing felt like the old logic puzzle about the fox and the chicken and the grain, where you can ferry only two of them across the river at once, and if you pick the wrong pair one of them will be eaten — and somehow we were always picking the wrong pair of Nets. In a 72-game season, Brooklyn used 38 different starting lineups. It was chaos. By the end of the season, I had seen more rappers named “Lil” at Barclays Center (Lil' Kim, Lil Baby) than I had seen games featuring the Big 3.

Re: Brooklyn Nets 2020-21

Splendid article on the New York basketball vocal lineage that runs through Glickman, Albert and Eagle (with a nod to Breen).

In the 1950s, a lot of people wanted to talk like Marty Glickman. Glickman was the greatest basketball announcer in the world, which is to say New York City. Glickman started calling Knicks games in 1946, the first year of the franchise. He rolled his eyes when he heard a moonlighting baseball announcer butcher a layup. “There was no technique, no attempt to catch the rhythm and flow of a game,” Glickman wrote. “I determined that I would be the basketball announcer.”

As a teenager living in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, Albert was in the thrall of Glickman. Albert was working as a Knicks ball boy. He was so shy he surprised Glickman when he told him he wanted to be an announcer. Glickman gave him a job. “I was working for him when I was in high school,” says Albert. “I was actually his writer.” Sometimes, he sat next to Glickman during games, listening to his sound while he handed him commercials to read.

“When you first start doing play-by-play,” Eagle tells me, “you open with a blank canvas, and you're instinctually trying to figure out your process. Often, your default mode is, ‘OK, well, what have I heard a lot in my life?'”

The voice Albert had heard a lot was Glickman's. “I started to talk like Marty because I was around him so much,” says Albert. “I answered the phone like him.”

Since this is a Nets thread, I'll give it my Nets spin.

Funny that there's no mention that Albert stole one of his most famous lines from Nets announcer John Sterling. Sterling used the term "from Downtown" when describing a three point shot. Because the NBA didn't have it yet, Sterling, announcing ABA games, did. Albert started using it when the leagues merged and the NBA adopted the three point shot. Other announcers may have used the term to describe a long shot, but it was Sterling who first used it for a three point shot. Both announcers were in New York at the time, so it is not a stretch to think Albert got it from Sterling. But he has never acknowledged it.
