Re: Guess who died in 2021

My memory is hazy but back in college we road tripped to Bucknell for some party, stayed in a dorm or frat house floor overnight. One of the students we partied with was one of Dick Thornburg's sons--the 2nd biggest party animal I ever met. (No 1 is a different story I will never be able to explain if you weren't there). I believe Thorny was AG at the time, would have been late in Reagan 2nd term

We have less than 20 active members and, like, three of you have reliable, first- or second-hand knowledge of Thorny, Jr.'s partying habits at a small school in central PA in the late eighties?

So much so that when Thorny, Sr. died 30 years later, you're all willing to step up, put your hand on the Bible and say, "Yeah, that guy's son was a monster. He totally drank from the volcano."

I knew nothing of his partying habits. All I knew about him was that he was there. Bucknell had more than enough scions of Pennsylvania political or corporate muckety-mucks to go around, so having the governor's kid there wasn't that big of a deal.

We visited there when our oldest daughter was looking at colleges. She had been accepted there and we wanted to check it out before she made a decision.

It was perfect - the buildings were perfect. The lawns were perfect. The students we saw, including our tour guide, looked perfect. There was not a single scrap of paper in the trashcans along the paths- perfect.

And we got scared out of our minds- we heard screaming from one of the dorms that sounded like someone was being tortured.

As we ran back to our car, we all mentioned something about Stepford Wives.

We never went back.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Actress Tanya Roberts is still alive, her representative said Monday, saying the information that she had died Sunday was not correct.

Roberts, 65, has been hospitalized since Dec. 24 after collapsing while walking her dogs, according to her publicist, Mike Pingel.

On Sunday, he passed word that he received through her distraught boyfriend, who had visited her in the hospital, that she had passed.

However, Pingel now says that information was not correct and that Roberts remains hospitalized. It was not immediately clear how the mistake occurred.

Helen Viola Jackson, the last known Civil War veteran widow, has died at 101.

Though she kept details of her life mostly private, Jackson recently disclosed to her minister while working out the details of her funeral that she had married James Bolin, a 93-year-old Civil War veteran, when she was 17 years old, the statement read.

At the time, Jackson had been providing daily care for Bolin, a widower who served as a private in the 14th Missouri Cavalry through the Civil War.

Because the war veteran "did not believe in accepting charity," he asked Jackson "for her hand in marriage as a way to provide for her future," according to the statement.

"I never wanted to share my story with the public," Jackson reportedly said during an oral history recording in 2018. "I didn't feel that it was that important and I didn't want a bunch of gossip about it."

That's very sad. She was a terrifically relatable young presence, whose career clearly fizzled out in adulthood. Playing adolescents trying to find a gender identity they didn't have to hide from in a gender-norming world may not be the broadest of niches, but it was hers and she owned it.

Phil Spector, the music producer responsible for some of the biggest hits in music and the architect of The Wall of Sound has died ... sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ.

We're told he died from COVID-related complications, after being transferred from his prison cell to a hospital. We're told he was diagnosed 4 weeks ago and went to the hospital but recovered well enough to return to prison, where he is serving a 19-to-life sentence for the murder of Lana Clarkson.

Our sources say he relapsed, had trouble breathing and was rushed back to the hospital, where he died Saturday.

I got to see Christopher Plummer on stage. It was in Macbeth, in Toronto in 1988, before it went to Broadway. Glenda Jackson was Lady Macbeth. I wish I could say something about his performance, but all I remember is that his Macbeth seemed scared to death of her Lady Macbeth, with some reason. She was fierce. It's a little like how I can say I saw Willie Mays play, but all I remember is that he got thrown out going first to third and the Mets lost.

He may have spent his career trying to escape that role, but if I got to defiantly rip up a Nazi flag ... in Nazi-occupied territory ... in a film that was a hit the world over, still resonating today, I'd consider that a career peak seven days a week.

Rush Limbaugh Was a Blight on America

The talk-radio titan was responsible more than any other non-politician for the spread of the prion disease from movement conservatism to the Republican Party. He ranks with Father Coughlin and Joe McCarthy among the country's most destructive demagogues.

By Charles P. Pierce

Feb 17, 2021

Excerpt:

I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction.

—Clarence Darrow

The doctrine of nil nisi bonum is not often subjected to the kind of stress test that it now will undergo with the death of Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday. I have gone all around Robin Hood's barn trying to find anything to say about him that is simply neutral, let alone complimentary. I have given up and decided to stand with Voltaire: "to the living we owe respect, but to the dead we owe only the truth."

The truth is that Limbaugh was a titan of American broadcasting who saw the potential of deregulated talk-radio as a profit center and conservative vandalism as a hyper-sellable product. That's it. That's all of it. Outside of those things, he was a blight, responsible more than any other non-politician for the spread of the prion disease from movement conservatism to the Republican Party, and the index patient for Trumpism before any of us even knew what it was. He ranks with Father Coughlin, Joe McCarthy, and very few others among the country's most destructive demagogues. American politics would have been infinitely better off if he'd stuck to promoting baseball.

Way to bring back Fr. Charles Coughlin who was, in many ways, worse than Limbaugh, largely because he had a younger base, and the authority of the Church.

And he was just simply a worse guy.

I kind of think it's useful to distinguish the demagogues in politics like McCarthy and Benjamin Tillman from the ones who use the media for their platforms, like Rush and Coughlin and so many others.

I think the latter are more dangerous, if only because they spawn more offspring.

Re: Guess who died in 2021

There's a lotta great detail in that story, the guy whose band was "into satin" made me laugh.

I know people from Cleveland swear by this guy, and that he never broke though is a mystery to them.

This is just me talking here but a guy aiming at the big time behind an accessible sound but not necessarily a unique one, and the idea they were a band and not a guy, shouldn't be allowed to give themselves a name that comes off like it represents an artiste or a known quantity. He badly needed the ampersand as in "& the Heartbreakers" "& the Destroyers" "& the E Street" and "& the Silver Bullet Band."

They just needed a band name that represented they were a gang you shouldn't fuck with, not some vehicle for a guy we never heard of. Then maybe we'd be open to learning what if any points of difference they represented.

Like Seger had that element of rock-meets-Motown soul and the smoky voice, Thorogood the steeped-in-tradition booze guitar, the Heartbreakers had Campbell's sound and the organ going, Springsteen had the band and the grand ambitions that were obvious to the lister. Even Johnny Cougar eventually got taken seriously once he found a brand pocket.

Re: Guess who died in 2021

You have something there about the branding. It took a lot of focus to figure out which one of these guys were Stanley.

That's OK. I love bands with rotating singers. But if it's your name on the band, and you're not the singer on the breakthrough song, but you are the guy front and center, that's a head-scratcher.

And yes, that track may be the Rick Springfieldiest thing in existence that's not done by Rick. And that's saying something, since Springfield himself was so shamelessly derivative.

Run a mile for Dick Hoyt, who first ran a marathon in Boston in 1980, while pushing his paraplegic son Rick in a wheelchair. They subsequently competed together as "Team Hoyt" in hundreds of marathons, ultramarathons, and triathalons, when he'd draw his son behind him in a boat during the swimming portion and in a trailer during the biking portion. They had run shorter races together (and come in last) before his son's condition ended his running years, but they enjoyed training together and didn't quit.

He developed heart troubles late in life, and meant to retire after the 2013 Boston race, but they didn't finish because of the terrorist bombing, so they went back and ran Boston in 2014, because they were badasses.

A gravely-voiced, pipe-smoking, hard-nosed coach, Schnellenberger coached his final game in 2011. He has a football complex and a field named in his honor at Louisville and FAU, and is responsible for a national championship banner hanging at UM.

Schnellenberger was a master salesman and his product was football. He was as adept at winning over potential donors as he was cooing babies. His act was part Lombardi and part Barnum & Bailey.

“Howard is one of the best coaches I've seen,” Bowden, a rival and friend of Schnellenberger's, once said. “Lou (Holtz), Joe (Paterno), Barry Switzer, Howard would have been right up there with any of them. He's so smart. He's not a guy to beat himself.”

Watergate villain G.Gordon Liddy, 90.

A theatrical personality whose event-filled career included more twists and turns than a fictional potboiler, Mr. Liddy was at various times an FBI agent, jailbird, radio talk-show host, best-selling author, candidate for Congress, actor and promoter of gold investments.

The role for which he is best remembered was in the plot to bug the Democratic Party headquarters in the Watergate complex in June 1972.

Mr. Liddy's combination of can-do ruthlessness, loyalty to Nixon and ends-justify-the-means philosophy made him a natural fit in a White House determined to get even with its political enemies.

At the same time, he was viewed by his superiors as “a little nuts,” in Nixon's phrase. “I mean, he just isn't well screwed on, is he?” the president complained to chief of staff H.R. Haldeman a week after the break-in.

With his intense stare, cannonball head, bristling mustache and machine-gun style of speaking, Mr. Liddy looked like the archetypal bad guys he later depicted in television shows including “Miami Vice.” His friend and fellow Watergate conspirator, the late E. Howard Hunt, described him as “a wired, wisecracking extrovert who seemed as if he might be a candidate for decaffeinated coffee.”

Mr. Liddy often boasted of his transformation “from a puny, fearful boy to a strong, fearless man” through a regime of intense exercise and physical bravado such as eating rats and holding his hand over a candle until the flesh burned.

“The trick is not minding,” he once explained of the pain, echoing a line used by Peter O'Toole in the 1962 movie “Lawrence of Arabia.”

He also developed a fascination early on with Nazi Germany, saying that he felt an “electric current” surge through his body when he listened to Hitler on the radio. To the young Liddy, the führer embodied the “power of will.”

In one of the few SNL skits she actually appeared in, Beatts did a great routine where she was an overly-amphetamine'd housewife talking a mile a minute

version of the show which tends to hit you over the head with stuff) but also quite funny.

I saw her last not too long ago when she was tapped as one of the talking heads for a TV retrospective of the early days of National Lampoon magazine

which was running on one of the cable movie channels a year or so back.

Dad would occasionally win coolness points from his kids when he'd walk by one of us watching a VHS tape of SNL or say Spinal Tap and, despite having no

The late DJ Pete Fornatale was as big a Poco fan (and several of their country-rock kin) as perhaps existed and his late in life legacy show, MIXED BAG, was created largely to catch artists like them who were FM radio staples but later fell through the cracks when more restrictive playlists became the norm.

That show, through his successor, still exists and still plays its fair share from the Poco/Springfield/BurritoBros catalog. He played some Rusty Young solo just last week in fact and I'm sure the upcoming show will acknowledge his passing with even more.

I met Pete Fornatale at a small record store in the early '80s. He was selling and promoting a book he had written and I had chatted him up. I was the only customer in the whole store and kinda felt bad for him and the low or no-turnout. So I bought his book, out of guilt, I think.

WFUV.org carries it live (4:00 - 8:00 Saturdays) and also keeps the two most recent shows in their 'Weekend Archive' section so you can listen on demand. That's almost always how I catch it and in fact am listening to last week's show NOW!!!!

It also plays via old fashioned terrestrial radio on 90.7, at least whenever it's not being pre-empted by Universty sports and/or religious services.

Is there a name in drama for the character archetype embodied by Frank's and Fred Willard's characters? It feels like there are parallels in Shakespeare if not in the Greeks. The vainglorious, unselfaware, scheming half-wit. Baritone-voiced and practiced in his manner but so gloriously innocent of what a jerk he comes across as that it's almost sweet. Shameless suck-up to authority, and un-deterred by his massive romantic strikeout record.

Anyhow, happy trails to Herb.

Donner was a machine. Very formulaic but knew what he was out for. Also a big fan of classic soul and helped give Darlene Love's career new life when he cast her as Trish Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon.

Also directed the Danger Island segments in The Banana Splits Show, which were insane but should nonetheless be used in flim schools, because they packed about two hours of narrative into about eight minutes.

Banana Splits!

He also directed Scrooged, one of my favorite movies. But apparently he and Bill Murray didn't get along. Wonder what the Murray version would have been like.

Bill Murray and director Richard Donner reportedly did not enjoy working together, creating a lot of tension on-set. When asked by film critic Roger Ebert if he had any disagreements with Donner, Murray replied: "Only a few. Every single minute of the day. That could have been a really, really great movie. The script was so good. There's maybe one take in the final cut movie that is mine. We made it so fast, it was like doing a movie live. He kept telling me to do things louder, louder, louder. I think he was deaf."

Re: Guess who died in 2021

I'm not sure Bill Murray plays well with others all that often. The other person who didn't like how SCROOGED turned out was lead writer Michael O'Donoghue.

Apparently O'Donoghue's version of the script was considerably darker (as was O'Donoghue himself often) than what wound up as the final edit and he wasn't

happy how it was, in his view anyway, toned-down, dumb-downed, cleaned-up, etc.

Re: Guess who died in 2021

Well, getting fired three quarters of the way through Superman II suggests Donner had some playing-with-others problems too. But Murray's estrangement from Harold Ramis is probably pretty indicting to the former. They were great creative partners but they were, like, the saddest and happiest guys in Hollywood, respectively.

Also, the whole saga behind the making the Superman franchise is fascinating. All the producers were no-talent weirdos, borderline mobsters, backstabbers, and shady money men. They made two good, memorable films out of five, and that's amazing in itself, and probably as much a testament to Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman as anybody.

Good points!

I remember some talk about "Caddyshack," too, where he wasn't getting along with Ted Knight and others. I get a sense that Murray looks at the script as a suggestion or a starting point and just adlibs away. We see the version that works, and I suspect there are a lot of adlib takes in the trash.

I do like the toned-down version of Scrooged. There's a lot of classic stuff in there. Some good songs on the soundtrack, too!

Oh I liked SCROOGED too.

It's just that O'Donohue, a man whose philosophy was summarized by the phrase, 'Comedy is No Laughing Matter', had a darker view of things and wasn't happy about his concept being rejiggered for the masses.

Oh, man.

Met him at the Sunrise Multiplex in Massapequa. He was just hanging out outside a theater going un-noticed, even though he was wearing a great big nightshirt ... and he was Biz Markie! We were heading into see (I think) Jungle Fever, and my brother had an eye for spotting folks, and we introduced ourselves.

The funny thing was that we had met his brother a few months earlier in the Hamptons. Seems the brother was a cop. And he couldn't stand calling his mother on the phone, because all she wanted to talk about was "Your brother won't get off the couch!" and "You've got to come over here and do something about your brother!" and a few weeks later, his brother was suddenly a national star, and the cop brother was feeling like a sucker and a half.

We didn't mention any of this to Biz.

Biz passes into eternity alongside my beloved aunt and godmother Patsy today. Patsy is the third of four sisters to die in the last year, following my mother and my Aunt Kathleen. She had a massive heart but was foolish enough to fall for President Trump's bullshit in 2016, gave him her vote and quickly regretted it.

She caught the official Trump-branded virus and went through a horrible cascade of health failures — her lungs weakened her heart and they went in there and fixed her heart up, but the heart medication did damage to her guts and her digestive tract just died on her.

They were exactly the sort of act you can look down on, and suddenly realize that the joke was on you.

I have a friend who worked for a theater that booked them. It was part of the rider that they have a portable john available to them right behind their set. Apparently, for somebody in the band, when he had to go, he had to go, and didn't need the Spinal Tappian stress of wandering around the stage wings looking for relief.

Aging rockers needing a portajohn would be awful easy to make fun of, but they would be exactly the kind of band that would turn that tale back on you by writing a terrific song called "When You Gotta Go."

The band promises to continue, with their guitar tech Elwood Francis taking over as bassist, with Dustuh's blessing. Elwood better get started on his beard.

Goalies often are among the better skaters on their team as the stereotype of the kid too fat to skate getting pressed into the pads doesn't really hold beyond maybe the youth level.

Maurice & Henri Richard are the only ones I can think of for sure although, yeah, I'm betting there are others.

Then there are the Hulls, father and son, which I don't think exists in baseball either, at least not until you get into executives and the like.

I found a couple of old-timey brother combos in the H HoF plus some other matching names which might have been but I was too lazy to look up.

It appears that the Swedish born identical Sedin twins played through 2017 so may not yet be eligible but each had over 1,000 career points so I

assume they'd be locks and would likely go in together in the near future.

He'd rail against one injustice or another and then, when getting called out for inaccuracies in his statements,

Re: Guess who died in 2021

George Meyer (not the Simpsons writer), just shy of 75. He taught journalism to many, including me. Now and then I remember some nugget or pearl he passed along and apply it to my writing, editing or thinking. It was good stuff. He was a mensch, as you might glean from his self-penned obit, which sounds like a class assignment, but wasn't.

George Herbert Meyer, 74, died August 17, 2021. I was born on August 23, 1946, in Bloomington, Indiana, and reared in Gainesville, Florida, the youngest and only son of three children by a mathematician (H.A. Meyer) and a linguist (Margaret Bloom MacGregor). After P.K. Yonge I earned two journalism degrees (Florida BSJ '67; Iowa MA '69); Sigma Delta Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Army 2LT.

Started as a Jacksonville sportswriter. Writer-producer for PBS; wrote for The Associated Press in Miami; and gave advice to Gannett in Ithaca, NY. Taught newspapering at four universities (9 years at USF); reviewed books and movies for dailies in Sarasota and Tampa until both papers sold; wrote two novels; began the USF Meyer Writing Award for nonfiction; and helped start the neighborhood rejuvenations of Hyde Park in the 70's-80's and Palmetto Beach after 2000.

I snorkeled the Bay of Pigs, sipped Moet with starlets at Cannes and shared raindrops with penguins in South Australia. After "retiring" I helped Boy Scouts and led tours at the Henry Plant Museum. Three-term president of the Hyde Park Men's Club. Co-founder Florida Film Critics Circle. Life-long liberal Democrat. Loyal Florida Gator alumnus, along with my two children.

I visited capitals on three continents and married three times (thanks, Sheila and Betty). Made and almost spent two fortunes and died poolside in Palma Ceia of congestive heart failure, predeceased by my sisters Marilyn Freeman, of Gulf Breeze, and Carol Keener, of Cincinnati.

I am survived by my gracious widow Mary Frances Meyer, her daughter Maggie Nguyen and son Jim Ellwanger (of Los Angeles); my stepson Jerry Hixon (of Jacksonville); son H. MacGregor Meyer (Kristen) and his two children Lane Meyer and Bloom Meyer; daughter Laura Meyer; and my almost-granddaughter Avery Nguyen, all of Tampa.

Given a choice between success in a job, a career, or a life, I chose life. It was a hell of a good time. If you show up at the Press Box, first drinks are on me till my tab runs out. Try the wings. I have asked my family to scatter my ashes in my favorite place – the Gulf of Mexico.

I'll forgive the Gators part.

It had a nice run on the Aspire network five years ago. I tuned in to enjoy the theme song one morning and got rehooked, eventually watching the entire series. Major outlets falling short of the desired clarity in their coverage of vaccine efficacy is hardly a new phenomenon. Neither is major outlets airbrushing the flaws of dead politicians, and we saw plenty of that yesterday, too. Progressive outlets and journalists, in particular, did grapple centrally with Powell's complicity in the Iraq war, the deceitful case for which he questioned internally then endorsed publicly, including in a hugely consequential speech at the United Nations. In his newsletter, Forever Wars, Spencer Ackerman made the case that if anyone could have stopped the war (and that's a big if), it was Powell, and yet he chose not to; writing for The Intercept, Peter Maass made a similar point in an article that referred to Powell as “a nice man who helped destroy Iraq,” and led in with a quote from Muntadher Alzaidi, the Iraqi journalist who once threw his shoes at George W. Bush and tweeted yesterday that he was “saddened by the death of Colin Powell without being tried for his crimes.” Numerous journalists from outlets across the board attempted, with nuance, to weigh Powell's war legacy against his achievements, including his status as the first Black person to serve as secretary of state. “For me as a teenager, Colin Powell represented black excellence in public service,” Karen Attiah, a Washington Post columnist, wrote. “But his selling of ‘evidence' of WMDs in Iraq and the decisions to invade was my first awakening to American imperialism and my introduction to the word ‘hegemony.'”

Many other journalists and outlets, however, eschewed nuance in favor of hagiography, pushing Iraqi voices to the margins, at best, and centering themes of bipartisanship, patriotism, civility, and meritocracy that are catnip to the American media establishment. Much topline framing prominently noted Powell's role in Iraq, only to put a passive gloss on it: the first paragraph of Powell's AP obituary said that his “sterling reputation of service” was “stained by his faulty claims” about Iraq, conjuring images of wine on the couch and a broken TV remote more than a murderous war; the Post's topline framing said that Powell “struggled” over the invasion as a “beleaguered secretary of state.” Speaking on MSNBC, Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent at the New York Times, called it a “great tragedy” and a “bitter pill” for Powell that he became “what he saw as the frontman for what turned out to be false intelligence.” Much of the coverage emphasized Powell's regret for his Iraq advocacy; a Time headline spoke of the “transformative power of owning your mistakes.” (Powell also once said that he “didn't have any choice” but to support the war, since the president wanted him to.) Even Carlson gushed that “when the supposedly brilliant Harvard neocons in the Bush administration assured us that the occupation of Iraq would be quick and simple, Colin Powell knew better.”

Moody Blues drummer and co-founder Graeme Edge, 80.

Graeme Edge, drummer and co-founding member of the Moody Blues, has died at the age of 80. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted British prog band announced Edge's death Thursday. No cause of death was revealed.

“It's a very sad day. Graeme's sound and personality is present in everything we did together and thankfully that will live on,” Moody Blues singer Justin Hayward wrote on Facebook. “When Graeme told me he was retiring, I knew that without him it couldn't be the Moody Blues anymore. And that's what happened. It's true to say that he kept the group together throughout all the years, because he loved it.”

    Joan Didion, 87.

Joan Didion, whose mordant dispatches on California culture and the chaos of the 1960s established her as a leading exponent of the New Journalism, and whose novels “Play It as It Lays” and “The Book of Common Prayer” proclaimed the arrival of a tough, terse, distinctive voice in American fiction, died on Thursday at her home in Manhattan. She was 87.

The cause was Parkinson's disease, according to an email sent by Paul Bogaards, an executive at Knopf, Ms. Didion's publisher.

Ms. Didion came to prominence with a series of incisive, searching feature articles in Life magazine and The Saturday Evening Post that explored the fraying edges of postwar American life. California, her native state, provided her with her richest material. In sharp, knowing vignettes, she captured its harshness and beauty, its role as a magnet for restless settlers, its golden promise and rapidly vanishing past, and its power as a cultural laboratory.

“We believed in fresh starts,” she wrote in “Where I Was From” (2003), a psychic portrait of the state. “We believed in good luck. We believed in the miner who scratched together one last stake and struck the Comstock Lode.”

My salute to Joan Didion goes to her for taking down Woody Allen's work in The New York Review of Books back in 1979 when the guy seemed so unimpeachable that nobody would even think of such a thing. It took 15 years for the zeitgeist or critical consensus to even consider she might have a point, and 30 or more for them to finally acknowledge that, yeah, she probably had a point.

I kinda like the fact that Madden didn't overstay his time in either coaching or in the booth even as there was shirley buckets of more money to be made in each.

He exited coaching in his early 40's citing burnout and time away from his family. He tells a story about questioning why his wife was preparing their son for his driving test

despite being only 14. 'No John, he's 16'. ... Oh!

And then as long as he stayed in the booth he still left there on his own timing too despite the idea that one of more of the networks would have offered him as many years

as he wanted. Perhaps he sensed that he'd start to become a parody of himself by hanging on longer.

Most guys leave fingernail scratches on the floor from being physically dragged out of either job. I think it helped his legacy in both that he didn't.

Of course attaching his name to that video game probably made up (x10) for all the money and recognition he walked away from elsewhere.
