The election is here. Bring it on.

Probably won't have results tonight unless it's a blowout, which is unlikely either way.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

CNN cracks me up. They have a countdown to when their special coverage

begins even though that's all they've talked abou all morning. Guess it's better

than the perpetual death toll they've been running for three quarters of a year.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

CNN is mostly taking this opportunity to shit on the current White House resident. I won't refer to him by the title he was elected - he does not deserve even that much.

Right now with about a quarter of the votes in both Dems are up in the 52-53% to 47-48% range. So that's promising.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

42% of the vote in and both Democrats lead by around 55 to 44.

Once source said to expect the Democrats to jump to an early lead and another said that the Republican votes would probably be counted first. So who knows? But so far so good, anyway.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

Both Dems are exceeding Biden's November numbers percentage-wise everywhere the votes have been counted in Georgia - every county --blue and red.

The absentee vote is being counted earlier this time I believe. Back to the Nets game.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

65% in and Perdue needs someone to find him 9000 votes. NYT still forecasting Dems squeaking by. CBS seems to think the rural vote is coming in faster than the Atlanta metro.

And apparently DeKalb as in the Georgia county is pronounced duh-CAB, and not like DeKalb Avenue in downtown Brooklyn.

Ugh, now 2/3 in and Purdue has a slight lead. Both races super close.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

NYT and twitterbuzz seem fairly confident that Warnock will win, as a large chunk of the uncounted votes are Atlanta area.

Warnock and Ossoff both outperforming what they needed and with the Atlanta metro vote to come, they may just pull it off.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

170,000 votes to come in from Dekalb County. With the Dem margin there at about 85-15, the Dekalb votes should put both Dems over the top.

The NYT live election tracker is calling Warnock the likely winner of his race and is leaning towards Ossoff.

I hate to get ahead of myself, but will Dems have enough votes in a 50-50 +1 senate (not a single defection) to kill the filibuster? Because otherwise, don't expect much other than perhaps a covid-related stimulus bill that can go through reconciliation and circumvent the filibuster.

The NYT just "upped" Warnock to "pretty likely".

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

Ossoff is down by 116K. There are 170K votes left in DeKalb that should skew roughly 80-20 Ossoff, which is about 140K-30K, leaving 6ish thousand to be picked up from the few votes remaining in the other large urban counties. It looks good, but not a done deal.

Warnock is indeed looking pretty likely.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

And as I was typing that, a whole mess of votes came in. Warnock is now ahead and I bet the AP calls the race soon. Ossoff now down by only 3,121.

Cue the conspiracy theorists.

Because with margins this thin, almost anything could make the difference.

I have to think that recounts are inevitable, no? Even if it doesn't change the outcome, it could keep the Senate in GOP control for a bit longer if the recounts drag past January 20.

Re: IET GA senate 1/5/2021

Recounts are automatic if the margin is within 0.5%. Warnock is up by 1.2%, Ossoff is up 0.4%.

Republicans no longer concede. But everyone (including Fox) have called it for Warnock, and Ossoff himself declared victory at 8 AM, probably a little too early, but the trends look very good for him.

https://georgia.gov/election-recount-rules-georgia

State law does not require an automatic recount of votes. However, based on Georgia H.B. 316 (2019), a candidate can request a recount if the margin is less than or equal to 0.5%. That request has to be made within two business days of the results being certified.

Other common situations where a recount may be requested include:
• If there is a suspected error or discrepancy in the returns, an election official can ask for a recount.
  •

• If a candidate for federal or state office petitions the Secretary of State regarding a suspected error or discrepancy, the Secretary of State can ask for a recount.
  •
Can anybody fumble the ball more decisively than Senator Loeffler has? To be running as incumbent, but with only a two-year legacy to defend, with that much money, and that incredible head of hair, it's hard to be in a more advantageous situation.

I stand corrected on automatic recounts. But expect both Republicans to file lawsuits to stretch the process out a la The Orange Satan.

Loeffler ran a scumbag campaign. No real issues. Just GOP alternate reality fantasy: that the Dems are communist , Marxist socialists. That the Dems are baby-killers who drink the blood of the babies they murder and that Biden really stole the presidential election.

And on top of that, she ran a racist campaign. She had ads which showed her opponent's face darker than it really is.

Let's see if the Dems can muster the support to kill the filibuster and pass some ambitious legislation . Like two new Dem senators from the state of Washington DC, for starters. At least Biden can now pick the cabinet he really wants to have - first choices. And the Dems'll be able to fill vacancies on the judiciary with fellow Dems for the first time in six years.

But let's see what kind of diabolical scumbaggerry the GOP comes up with with Senate control down to just a single race with a narrow margin of victory. And let's see what the GOP controlled courts do with such a small margin of victory to overcome in order to deliver the Senate to the GOP.

This is, in the words of Joe Biden himself, a big f'n deal. It also means the end of stupid Republican investigations. Manchin is against getting rid of the filibuster, but Joe Biden should promise he'll pave the streets of West Virginia with gold if he relents.

Trump is already inventing false allegations of fraud in Georgia

    Excerpt:

So early Wednesday morning, there was Trump, asserting on Twitter that some 50,000 votes in Georgia had appeared out of the ether — intimating that they'd been produced illegally to aid Democratic [Senate run-off] candidates.

In the most anti-climactic news of the day, the other race has been called for Ossoff, meaning that the Democrats will take back the Senate figuratively, assuming that we can first take back the Senate literally.
