Beltran, hitting .138 this month, whiffs with a man on 2nd and 1 out.

I'd say our struggles and his are related.

Dammit.

KC
Jun 24 2005 07:21 PM

And Piazza leaves two men on in the first.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 07:22 PM

Fuckedy fuck shit piss cock dick.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 07:25 PM

I'm kinda stupidly OK with Jeter homering there.

Gives Martinez an early reason to bear down, or something.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 07:27 PM

Uhhh, hasn't gotten much better since.

That's OK. Pedro's had bad 1st innings before.

KC
Jun 24 2005 07:33 PM

The fading Bernie leaves two on as well in the bottom of the first.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 07:41 PM

Right, Reorge

Nice play by Gayrod to set that run up.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 07:42 PM

Ooops!

abogdan
Jun 24 2005 07:43 PM

Two hands Bernie, two hands.

Williams drops a routine fly ball turning a sac fly into an error. Good guys take the lead 2-1.

abogdan
Jun 24 2005 07:45 PM

Mientkiewicz is running wild on the Yanks. First a bunt single, then he advances to third when a pickoff attempt on him at second rolls into short CF and he beats a throw from Jeter.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 24 2005 07:47 PM

Terrible throw from Jeter, very un-Yankee-monument-park like.

abogdan
Jun 24 2005 07:47 PM

And Doug scores on a sac fly - 3-1 Mets.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 07:49 PM

3 sac flies in 1 inning! That's hard to do.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 07:54 PM

Three con-sec-utive sac flies.

Call Elias. Sounds like a record.

duan
Jun 24 2005 07:54 PM

never been done by an NL team before according to ESPN!
Pedro's starting to SMOKE'm

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 07:55 PM

Tony Womack, man, what were they thinking?

Hacking a Pedro's cheese. Looked like a Little Leaguer there.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 07:57 PM

Pedro's back.

I think there's something about Pedro where his game inspires others to greater heights, and vice versa. Seems to me he suddenly became less of a world beater when it seemed the Mets weren't able to go there with him. That's one reason I worried so about the O.

We're set for a good inning: 8 whoile batters before Beltran.

abogdan
Jun 24 2005 07:58 PM

Cliff Kaboom

4-1 Mets.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 07:58 PM

bang. POW!

duan
Jun 24 2005 07:58 PM

Kaboom: Cliff Floyd!

KC
Jun 24 2005 07:58 PM

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 07:59 PM

You know that outfielding technique of chasing an obvious homerun ball to the fence just to show respect for your pitcher.

Yeah, Gary Sheffield wasn't playing that.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 08:06 PM

I'm watching me some baseball on the OUI Network.

Craptastic!

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 08:12 PM

Cano 0-2. Trade value plummeting.

duan
Jun 24 2005 08:14 PM

not only that, but the ESPN guys were squarely blaming him for not getting Reyes either back to 1st or out @ 2nd on Mussina's thrown into the outfield

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 08:14 PM

FU, Gayrod.

End it here, Petey.

duan
Jun 24 2005 08:15 PM

I can't dislike A-Rod; we share a birthdate.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 08:16 PM

Pedro should've had that.

Anderson should've knocked it down. Seeing eye sucker.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 08:18 PM

OK, now let's get some more.

abogdan
Jun 24 2005 08:36 PM

Pedro's pitching so Carlos goes deep. 5-2

Spacemans Bong
Jun 24 2005 08:37 PM

Obligatory Beltran home run here.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 08:37 PM

Back to homering in Martinez starts, huh, Carlos.

Another winning effort by Sheffield.

KC
Jun 24 2005 08:41 PM

Piazza just misses one too, they're teeing off on Muss.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 08:42 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 24 2005 08:44 PM

As I was saying, a lot of Piazza's homerun power has turned to double power this season.

Close play at first for Anderson, and YES doesn't show the replay.

KC
Jun 24 2005 08:44 PM

I saw his decline coming years ago. No one listened to me. No one listens
to me now. Rinse. Repeat.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 08:47 PM

Cameron 1, Cano 0

I'm hearing more Metly cheers than usual at quote The Stadium unquote.

Cool.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 08:51 PM

Nice hustle by Sheff on his fly to right which landed fair and a good RF might not have caught.

If I'm the MFYs, I offer Sheff straight up for Cameron NOW!!!! and after rejected, offer to throw in Tom Gordon and two minor leaguers.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 08:57 PM

Dammit. We should have KOed Mussina in that inning.

KC
Jun 24 2005 08:58 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 25 2005 09:27 AM

Mets go quietly in the sixth. I'd like a few more runs, not sure where Petey's
pitch (oe: count) is approaching.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 09:03 PM

I have a dream.

If Pedro can do this while rarely being able to top 92 (rarely able to reach it, in fact), maybe he can like keep doing it through his contract.

abogdan
Jun 24 2005 09:04 PM

Pedro's thrown 84 pitches through 6. He should be able to make it through the seventh at least. Unless it's a quick inning, though, the pen will be taking things over in the 8th.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 09:07 PM

Sturtze is one those utterly unremarkable Yankee relievers that Heyman and Company have argued would make a really indespensible Met.

Let's dispense with that mindset here and now.

Let's go, Metsos.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 09:11 PM

Now they're continuing the fiction that Yankee Stadium is the same building that Jacob Rupert built.

This sounds like a Metfan's ballpark right now.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 09:28 PM

Marlon Anderson and Blue are not complaisant right now.

Spacemans Bong
Jun 24 2005 09:33 PM

fantastic play by Beltran to rob Matsui of a double.

Jun 24 2005 09:38 PM

note to willie:

KC
Jun 24 2005 09:42 PM

That was pretty funny. I wonder what they were saying.

KC

I got an idea, let's sac-fly these bitches to death. 6-2

The New York sac Exchange.

Edgy DC
Jun 24 2005 09:50 PM

The Mets sent the Yankees Stanton for Heredia.

Don't make this a long inning Braden. We've got a gay dame tomorrow.

Stop whining - you're out!

who says he can't play third base! wow, nice play by wright!

KC
Jun 24 2005 09:56 PM

Tino is a true Yankee.

Womack drops down a killer bunt and Wright GUNS him down. We need
one more out.

Jeter up, a quick 0-2 and ....

holychicken
Jun 24 2005 09:56 PM

Wright is de freakin man! That play was awesome.

Bad defense screwed us in the last series. . .and (at least) three good plays this game really helped us out.

I hate bad defense and love good defense. :)

Frayed Knot
Jun 24 2005 10:03 PM

The key to the game was DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!

(sorry, I was having a metsonline flashback)

Who the heck is Lolita?

ScarletKnight41
Jun 24 2005 10:17 PM

Lolita Lopez. The Channel 11 sports ditz who insists on pronouncing everything in a Spanish way, even when it's not supposed to be pronounced that way (when she referred to Villanova as Villa-nueva this winter, D-Dad was almost homocidal!).

She reminds me of the Hispanic newswoman character spoof on 'Married With Children"

Also, the woman who does the locker room interviews on YES has to be the least knowledgeable "baseball" reporter ever - she makes Suzy Q Waldman sound like Whitey Herzog

Jun 24 2005 10:41 PM

great IGT guys, had a laugh reading it.....I watched a few innings on Al-Yankzeera and Kay said this about Pedro after I thihk he retired 9 in a row.." umm , I don't like using the word genius talking about an athlete but that folks is the Einstein of pitching"....nice one Mike..

anywho, great situational hitting by the Mets tonight...

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 24 2005 10:45 PM

I had 3 consecutive heart attacks in the 9th inning.

Jun 24 2005 10:48 PM

Yeah I hear ya, Looper gives up hits but gets his 16th save, I was squeezing my lucky baseball hard as hell in the 9th..

ScarletKnight41
Jun 24 2005 10:57 PM

That wasn't a save situation, was it?

Johnny Dickshot

Jun 24 2005 11:35 PM

Nice IGT, guya! A fine read. And a fine game!

I was out with relatives of the girlfriend and a dude in a Mets uniform passed by, saying something like "Pedro shut the Yankees DOWN!" whereupon my girlfriend remembered it was the Subway Series. We went to a bar for the final inning, which made me quite happy.

Got a keeper, there.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 25 2005 01:18 AM

What was incredible was that Pedro was at 58 pitches after 3 innings and still made it thru 8.

He's a keeper too.

SI Metman
Jun 25 2005 03:21 AM

It was just like the last time when he faced the MFY and had that 27 pitch 1st and still managed to make it 7.

Pedro owns innings 4-7 this season.

Edgy DC
Jun 25 2005 09:16 AM

Something that belongs in the UMDB: Billy Graham, preaching last night as part of a New York revival meeting that appears to mark the end of his public ministry, asked the gathered to pray for both the Yankees and the Mets.

duan
Jun 25 2005 01:09 PM

tell you something, whatever Sal may say about the cheapness of Wilpon and that the mets aren't really competitive, they're a fucking fun team to watch when they're playing well like they did last night. It was 3 am when the game finished and I didn't feel anything other then 100% completely awake.

-

holychicken
Jun 25 2005 07:49 PM

In that game the mets set or tied the record for most sac flies in an inning (3). Obviously, this is impossible without an error. Now, if Bernie had made the error on what would have been the third out, would it still have been ruled a sac fly? If not, how would it be ruled?

Frayed Knot
Jun 25 2005 08:42 PM

]Now, if Bernie had made the error on what would have been the third out, would it still have been ruled a sac fly?

No. The Sac Fly was concocted (in the '40s I believe) with the thought that a hitter "settling for" a Fly Ball in those run-scoring situations (man on 3rd/less than 2 outs) can be somewhat intentional* and so is rewarded w/a non-AB plus an RBI even when the ball turns out to be dropped as in the Bernie debacle. The batter "did his job", it wasn't HIS fault that the klutz dropped the rock.
With 2 outs, however, there can be no such intent and therefore no such reward.

*(indeed, ML batters tend to hit OF flies in those situations more often than can be accounted for by chance)

]If not, how would it be ruled?

As a time at bat, an error against the hitter's BA, and no RBI -- just like it was a muffed grounder or infield pop.

holychicken
Jun 26 2005 10:30 AM

The explanation as to why they did it, becuase of intent, made it all come together for me.

Thanks. . . . KNOT!

heheheh (reminds me of middleschool)
