Quality first inning for Zambrano, whiffing Abreu looking and Thome swinging. It's time for Tejada's magic to end. This is a Big Game in my estimation.

Nice first two plate appearances by Reyes. On the first one he got Tejeda to chuck 12-13 pitches before flying out. On the second he walks, got Tejeda to pay him so much mind that he stepped off a bunch of times and threw over too. Cameron doubled him in from first and went to third on the throw.

That turned out to be an awful inning. 1 more baserunner was the knockout punch for Tejada but he stayed on his feet to the bell. Two disappointing ABs for Wright so far. He did a nice job of working Tejada this time but whiffed. His first AB was poor -- a first pitch groundout to SS with a runner on 2nd and 1 out. That let them iBB Dauber and retire Zamby for the 3rd out. We've got to turn the screws when we have the chance.

Hernandez, after that RBI single makes two excellent points that Frannie seemingly would've missed: (1) Zambrano shook Piazza off twice before that RBI change; (2) Utley had no business not going to third.

Why'd they take Tejada out after only 4 innings? Not that I'm complaining now that Geary's given up 4 runs.

He'd thrown about 200 pitches in the first 4 innings. Jose Offerman is Met #765 by my count but first in your hearts. I coulda sworn he was a righty only and not a switchy. But I never saw him play much anywhoo. Welcome Abordick!

Offerman (career .361 OBP) should be in the lineup as often as possible. and probably leading off if he still has the decent speed i remember from a few years ago. Victor Houdini made me cringe tonight, but hey 1 run is 1 run.

I guess if Ring is going to be an effective lefty specialist by the end of this season, Willie wants to get him as many chances in the role now, particularly with a margin for era which encourages Ring to throw strikes -- which has been his main problem. He got Abreu's and Thome's butts to fly out and now he'll have cahnfidence that he can do that in September. That's my thinking about Randolph's thinking, anyhow.

Sure. I just don't think you buy that there is anything to the idea that Piazza's clutch ability is failing relative to his general batting ability. More importantly, whose neck did they tape Graves' head onto?

Nah, you still have a few in the bat. For instance, Dae-Sung Koo is warning in the pen for the ninth. Do the Mets run the risk of burning all their lefties pitching mopup? (Looks like nope, Graves returns for the ninth.)

I think that's why Graves flipped the Reds fan, he insulted his Mom who is Vietnamese, has to be a strange trip for him ,you go from 41 saves last season to mop up duty with the Mets.

This turned out to be a good opportunity to play around with the pen -- the Phils looked totally defeated. There's hardly any argument that Abreu is a great player, but I swear I've caught him lollygaging and essentially taking some nights off in the past and I think we did tonight too. His ugly grey-colored glove didn't help him eitger of Beltran's "triple."

When a pop like that is in the air - and all other conditions apply - the ump yells; "infield fly, IF FAIR". Think about it, the entire rationale for having the I.F.R. doesn't exist when the ball is foul. ]... Abreu is a great player, but I swear I've caught him lollygaging and essentially taking some nights off in the past and I think we did tonight too It's not your imagination; Abreu is frequently indifferent in his outfield play.

Well the ball did come down in fair territory, Daubach made the play. The ump certainly might have called it an "Out if.." but Frannie and Keith sure didn't mention it.

Then we're talking about different plays. I was thinking of a 1st & 2nd situation where a foul pop was gloved by Wright. In that case the ump indicated the IFR but then didn't call it when the ball came down foul. Didn't see the one you're talking about - I was in and out of the game after a while.

Bell had just driven in the first Philly run, with Utley going to second but inexplicably not going to third. While Keith is ripping him for this, Lieberthal hit one straight up the silo. Piazza camped under it, but while he was building a campfire, Daubach called him off and made the play. Never mind, Gameday says it was an infield fly out. The booth just missed it, is all.
