WATP - Are You Sitting Down?

Thought I'd make the first one on the new board something interesting. As opposed to the Buyer (trade kids for a needed vet)/ Seller (sell a vet for kids) thread, I offer the following vet for vet deal for your consideration: Many are lamenting the Mets need for a middle of the order power hitter , preferably a first baseman. There is one reportedly available. He was injured most of last year, but recently seems to have regained his health, confidence and stroke. His team is reportedly in the market for a centerfielder. Their current one is getting old, and they have no suitable replacement on the 40 man roster or in the minors. And stories have surfaced recently saying that team is interested in a centerfielder currently in the employ of the Mets. So, I present for your consideration/ comments: Mike Cameron for Jason Giambi. And the Yanks throw in a substantial portion of the cash difference in their salaries. I think Giambi will regain most of his pre-juice form and be a productive hitter again. Real soon. If he does, this would be a steal for the Mets. Discuss among yourselves. Later

If we wanted Giambi we could take him for a whole lot less than Mike Cameron. If we pay the freight the MFYs might throw in a prospect too.

No to anything that brings Giambalco to the Mets, from what I have seen of him he's over matched on fast balls, guys pitch to him now instead of walking him in tight spots, sure he'll get a big hit now and then but he's not half the hitter he was 4 years ago.

Giambi is owed some $70+mil for the remainder of his contract. If the Mets picked up as much as $10mil of that - meaning we'd get Jason for essentially about $2.5mil/year - the Yanx would take Kirk Cameron in that swap and kiss your feet while they're at it.

Seriously, Kirk Cameron for Michael J. Fox. Fox gets that Parkinson's under control and we're looking at a real rebound for Growing Pains. They'd have to resign DiCaprio, of course. That won't be easy, but if they're going to make that deal it would be with the intention to win now.

But, if Piazza is no longer with the team next year, who is going to assume the position of Mets Italian Player? Cameron should be worth more. Better to trade Diaz, but probably can't get as much for him. Plus for remainder of this year you have a log-jam at first base. No, Giambi's time has passed

Sorry MFS you're not getting off that easy. You posed that trade as a valid option and now rather than defend it in the face of ridicule you provide us with a list of Eye-talian players as if to say that your WATP was tongue-in-cheek. Nope. Defend your trade or admit that it is/was a ludicrous idea and you had accidentally over-medicated 30 minutes before you posted.. tick, tick, tick....

Sorry, Soupy, my trade proposal was a true WATP (with the accent on the Wild Assed). And I gave the reasons for it in my original post. While we wait for Giambi to get back his power stroke, he still has an OBP of well over .400 this year, and isn't that something the Mets are lacking? I posted the trade because it was wild assed, and I just wanted to rekindle the WATP tradition on this new board. I probably expected disagreement, but I took the "ridicule" in the same spirit in which I proposed the trade - with a sense of humor. The list and the premise were indeed tongue in cheek. And I'm surprised nobody has noticed that I missed Yogi Berra, a Met player in 1965. And, I watch my medication very closely, thank you. Later

So you are saying that you would NOT approve a Giambi for Cameron trade and you just posted it to see reactions? That you recognize it for the insanity that it is and that you in fact are medicating?

Why don't we look into getting Chris Cannizarro back? He's got as many HRs left as Giambi does, I think.

Why throw acusations like that around unless you are certain of someone's circumstances? I was taught that you don't make fun of someone else's afflictions. I considered it to be out on the edge (the definition of a WATP) ,but certainly not insane (that is such a harsh word). The case may have been weak, but it was a case. I really don't know whether I would go for the trade or not. I posted it because I wanted to see what others felt about it. And I got their input. :( Later

Oh please. Don't get all victim-like on me. How the hell was I to know you're diabetic? And even if I did I wouldn't make fun of it. I was kidding with you and everybody (except you it seems) knew it. And if you are going to take everything everybody says here literally then I would suggest that Mr. Sabremetric add some Kleenex stock to his sad portfolio. ]I really don't know whether I would go for the trade or not. Unfortunately now I can't comment on that. If I offended you I apologize but c'mon man.

Ok I guess this answers my question on the non baseball page about why we like to know the new/ old identity of posters. I missed the intended humor. I felt I had a handle on the "personalities" of many of the posters, but I misread yours. Dang, I wish we could use those emoticons so we could signal when we're kidding. No harm no foul. While I don't agree with the trade, we can get FAR more for Cameron than Giambi, I don't think Giambi is necessarily done. While I doubt he will ever be an MVP candidate again, is it out of the question to think he'd be capable of .280, 25, 95 RBI? And as someone mentioned, he still draws walks and gets on base. I think he'll turn it around, and if you can live with atrocious defense, the steroid-ridden baggage, and Yankee excrement on your team, he might not be so bad an option if the Yanks were to eat a significant portion of his contract. I however, would rather not live with such excrement, so I pass on him.

Well there are different types of diabetes, so maybe people with one type favor the trade while other diabetics do not.

His turnaround was relatively predictable. Not quite as predictable as the long-term load his salary looks to be, though.

In fairness to JG, he is hitting better, but it would still take the Yankees eating 75% of his payroll and asking for something less than Cameron before I took that kind of chance on him. Plus some reassurance he'd field the position better than Mo Vaughn. Not a ringing endorsement, MFS, but notice I didn't say no out of hand...

Never noted here is that Giambi went on to win the Comeback Player of the Year in 2005 and had a decent 2006 as well.
