1. Derek Jeter

2. Joe Torre

3. Jason Giambi

4. Randy Johnson

5. Bernie Williams

OK, what did I do wrong? It didn't come out as a poll.

Start a new topic.

Before you type anything into the big blue rectangular field, scroll down and see the smaller fields marked "Poll question" and "Poll Option." That's where your poll stuff goes.

If you get the poll up, I'll delete this threadie.

TheOldMole
Jun 25 2005 10:32 AM

I must be the world's biggest idiot. When I go down there, I can only enter one line, not the whole poll. I realize everyone else can figure this out with no trouble.

Edgy DC

The world's biggest idiot is a former poster known as BaLlOoN kNoT.

Two fields should be down there plus a button. Something like:

Poll question:

Poll option:
Add poll option

Add your question in field one, then your first option in field two, then click the "Add poll option" button and another field should appear.

Poll question:Who's the biggest...

Poll option:Derek JeterAdd poll option

Then you click that button and get another field to add another Yankee.

Poll option:Derek Jeter
Poll option:Brian DoyleAdd poll option

Whenever you want to add another answer option, click that button.

Derek Jeter.

I appreciate his talent (no, really I do) and the fact that he's a great ballplayer that I would like to have on my team. Well actually I would rather have a ballplayer LIKE him, just not HIM.

I just hate the fucker. There's a slight chance that it might have something to do with the team he plays for.

Derek "Mr. Clutch" Jeter
St. Joe Torre
Jorge "Dumbo" Posada
A-Hole
The Big Douchebag
Gary "Mr. Sunshine" Sheffield
Donnie (the Yanks have never won anything with me in uniform) Matttingly
Tino (I quit on the Cardinals) Martinez
Parasite/Steroid Boy - who's become so pathetic he's barely relevant.

And let us not forget: George (the blubbering, crying shell of his former self) Steingrabber

Jeter hands down. I hate the MF so much and on so many levels I'm almost
ashamed of myself as an otherwise generally good human being.

I hope he has to endure many many years of 200 million dollar mediocrity.
The look of disappointment and frustration on his slappably silly puss is
worth the price of cable.

Any poll on this subject neeeds to have Rodriguez..

Well, I guess it works OK as a regular thread. I'll try again next time.

Jeter is my choice. There's something about him that says MFY.

A rod, for sure.

I have nothing against jeter. . . he plays with heart, he is a team player (well, except for the whole not offering to move to put the better SS at SS) and, on top of that, he is good player. The only thing I don't like about jeter is the way his fans and sports writers kiss his ass. . .that bugs me to no end. . . no matter what he does, it was a great thing to do.

A-rod is the biggest MF because of that slap. . .that really sold me on his MFYiness. And, after he hits his 400th homerun, how he said he was so glad to do it in "this uniform." Give me a break you greedy bastard who has managed to bring three teams down. . . one of them, thankfully, being the yankees.

He was always a jerk, but at least his old self comported himself emotionally in a manner worthy of an overbearing, tyrannical jerk, rather than on a par with Sally Field accepting an academy award.

I left George off because then there's no contest.

In Buster Olney's book, he does a nice job drilling down into what made many of last century's greatest MFYs tick, and is deep and on the whole, admiring.

Bernie was a shy guy who really needed the support and nuturing the team offered him early in his career and wanted badly to show he loved them back; O'Neill was a baby, but a guy whose intense focus on himself was accepted by teammates because they fed off his passion. Knoblauch was a proud guy horrified and eventually incapacitated by his own struggles and troubled personal life; Posada was driven by doubts about his own ability and fear that he would lose his job; Rivera is mature and spiritual; Wells was an unreliable alcoholic but a great talent when he wanted to be...

Now Jeter. Olney's take seems to be: From a good home, very good player, but awfully conceited, easily dissatisfied and rather uncaring toward others. Without coming out and saying it, Olney suggests Jeter is a MF.

At least that's how I read it. Anyone else who read that book get the same impression?

(PS -- It's a very good book IMO. LAST NIGHT OF THE YANKEE DYNASTY. You don't have to buy the overriding premise to enjoy it, even if/when/though it turns out to be boldly prescient).

Edgy DC
Jun 25 2005 09:45 PM

It took a lot of cajones for them to release the book under that title while the Yanks were still competing for another championship.

Great photo Kase :)

I'd have to vote for Captain Intangibles as well. There's something smarmy and insincere about him that really bothers me.

Jeter, hands down. Jeter and I share the same first name, same spelling too. I hate it when people hear my name and say "Oh, like Derek Jeter?"

I don't know who it is , but I can tell you what they did.
I tunewd in late to hear a radio interview on WFAN yesterday. A Yankee beat reporter was being interviewed about Friday night's game.
He said that during the post game Yank manager group interview, another reporter asked Torre why he didn't have Sierra or someone else hit for Cano in the ninth inning.
Torre gave his usual "I'm not going to answer that" kind of response and the press conference went on.

After it was over, someone pulled aside the reporter who had asked that question, and told him 'You don't ask questions like that".

The MFY is the guy from the "Ministry of Truth"who gave the order to try to stifle valid questions. My guess that came from the highest of levels.

If Torre's job really is in trouble, then they would have wanted questions like that asked, so as his tactical skills are in question.
If he is secure, they want to stiffle questions like that, to show that the Boss has confidence in a "perfect" manager.

My wife accompanied me to a baseball card show a few years ago. She wandered off, letting me do my thing, and she was checking out one case, when the guy behind the counter said "So, you lookin' for Jeter, honey?" She flipped him the bird and walked away.

I'd vote Jeter too; I've read Olney's book, and I agree.

This is off-topic but I've had encounters lilke that at baseball card shows and it's a major reason why I stopped going to those shows. Even as a Yankee fan if I heard some version of "Jeter's your favorite player right?" (not even close) "You must love Jeter because he's hot!" (I don't find him attractive in the least) or "Are you buying that for your father/brother/boyfriend?" (my father hates sports, I have no siblings and my significant other at the time wasn't a sports fan) and proceed to treat me like an idiot one more time I might have lost my mind.

Back on topic, I happen to think Gary Sheffield is a pretty big MF'er but putting myself in Mets or Red Sox fans shoes I would have to choose Jeter as the biggest MF in MFY because he's generally viewed as the face of the Yankees, thus one of the most easily hated players.

Disclaimer: I am playing the Devil's Advocate here.

After a couple of days, Jeter is obvously everyone's least favorite Yankee. But what about that ever present smile? Doesn't that make him a good guy?

ScarletKnight41
Jun 26 2005 09:51 PM

The fact that it's an insincere smile prevents it from making him a good guy.

TheOldMole
Jun 26 2005 11:52 PM

Remember, this is the Evil Empire. They're all evil!!!!! (Well, Bernie maybe less evil than some.) We don't have to find good in any of them, certainly not Jeter.

How does re-Eviled Mike Stanton fit into the pecking order?

I vote Jeter. He's overrated (a very fine player, but not nearly as good as MFY fans and the media think), and he just oozes insincerity.

Rotblatt
Jun 27 2005 02:42 PM

Jeter smirks a lot. I rather like the fact that he became the tragic figure on the New Yankees last year, though--the one guy still giving it his all as the season collapses around him.

I just saw the clips this morning, but did anyone else get the impression that peeps were avoiding A-Rod after he crossed home plate? He was so jazzed and it seemed like no one really wanted him nearby.

The clip was pretty short, though, so I may have missed the tounging and dry humping favored by the Yankees.

Oh, and my official answer: Jeter.
