Met Life(rs)

I started thinking about players who had played out their entire careers playing only for the Mets. My first thought was that I would put together a starting team of Met Lifers. But excluding current players I had a hard time coming up with players other than Ed Kranepool. Using the rankings forum I started going down the list and couldn't find another til Bruce Boisclair. Then a bit further down I found Ron Hodges (though Craig Swan and John Stearns hardly played for anyone else). Then I got depressed and stopped. If anyone else wants to go ahead and make a starting team, please do so. I give you C- Hodges, 1b- Kranepool, RF - Boisclair. Then I give up.

Yup.

An alternative criterion that would bring you a lot of other fine players -- Jones, Swan, Stearns -- is that he would be a guy who didn't play usefully for anyone else. Nothing above replacement level. Jim McAndrew was barely above rep level for the 1974 Padres over 41 innings.

After Kranepool, the next highest profile absolute Met Lifer is...

...Jeff Innis!

I think such a category is likely to have more pitchers than batters. Batters' careers tend to end with falling out of a team's plans and trying another team or two before they all give up on you. Pitchers' careers tend to end with protracted rehabilitation and packing it in.

Thanks, Seawolf. Don't know how I managed to skip right over Jeff Innis.

If Kaz Matsui goes back to Japan he stands a chance of hitting right in the middle of this lineup.

(on edit): You need to take Jason Phillips offa that list.

Kanehl beats Billy Murphy out for that third outfield slot.

Not fair to include active players like Matsui.

That list is only good through 2004: I'll go back and took off all the guys who play for different teams in '05.

We still need a third baseman and, well, an entire pitching staff.

edit: For now, you have to leave Reyes, Wright, Bell, et al, off this team. Retired guys only.

Plenty of pitchers who did alright in brief careers. At least faked it for twenty innings.

You want more starters? I've got no hate for Randy Tate.

Plus I don't see how we can not pick Joe Moock to play third.
