All-purpose Hitler and the Nazis Play Baseball Thread

This thread is so over.

KC

I don't get it.

Edgy DC

Instant Godwin's gonna get ya.

KC
Jun 27 2005 06:16 PM

Is it a joke, or was Godwin's law invoked (I had to look up Godwin).

soupcan
Jun 27 2005 07:54 PM

Okay here's the plan -

We wait until we get a new poster, welcome them abordick, blah, blah, blah...

Then one or all of us baits them into a flame war (all of us - how much fun would that be?) or some other such nonsense and starts using words or phrases like 'stalag' or 'German engineering'.

When they finally write 'Hitler' or 'Nazi' we all pipe in with 'Godwin's Law - thread over!' The admins close the thread and we go on about our business like nothing happened.

How freaked would you be if that happened to you? They'll think we're a bunch of wack jobs.

I nominate cooby.

I'd just like an explanation.

We ARE a bunch of whack jobs.

It reminds me of a Blizzard of '78 inspired practical joke (after being snowed in for a week, one's boredom takes on all sorts of forms). My soon-to-be-boyfriend and I were on the phone for a few hours, and a topic of conversation was an especially annoying freshman. We decided that when school resumed the following week, we would get as many people as possible to say, "Hi Ivan" to him (not his real name, of course). When he asked why, the uniform response was, "You look like an Ivan." We even got at least one teacher involved in this (I'm telling you, he was REALLY annoying!).

But back to this thread - weren't there more posts this afternoon? What happened to them?

Kase, halfway down the front page here is the source thread.

KC
Jun 27 2005 08:09 PM

And if someone made a faux pa, a flawed try at humor, or was just being
an assclown (which is allowed and encouraged from time to time) why wasn't
the thread just nuked altogether instead of confusing people?

KC
Jun 27 2005 08:13 PM

>>>halfway down the front page here is the source thread.<<<

I obviously didn't read this before my last post.

Fucking assclowns, the whole lot of you ....

Hey!

Were there deleted posts? I really don't get the whole thing. Do we really
need a Nazi humor thread?

This has to be one of the most bizarre threads I have ever encountered at the pool.

I just wish I had a clue what the hell it meant.

Edgy DC
Jun 27 2005 09:43 PM

Did you read the thread "How about Godwin's Law?"

If you had, you'd realize that WP was trying to trigger the law, and so amuse himself and countless others.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 27 2005 09:46 PM

If I've cobbled this together properly, it all started with this (which is what I assume is mean by the term source thread) - http://cybermessageboard.ehost.com/getalife/viewtopic.php?t=366.

Then Willet started this thread, which is kind of esoteric taken out of context.

A bunch of us got confused about which Hitler related thread we were reading, and thus whether posts we remembered but didn't see had been deleted.

It's much ado about very little, I think.

KC
Jun 27 2005 09:49 PM

No duh, Ed. I was busy today and hadn't (and often don't) read every single
thread within hours of them being posted. Then I get a cryptic Godwin instant
karma answer that sends me on a google goose chase to find out what the
hell you're talking about while still wondering why Willet is making Hitler and
Nazi threads. This whole thread was a grand waste of time and not funny.

No, we don't.

Oh, for...

This isn't a Nazi humor thread.

Read first. Post later.

>>>Read first. Post later.<<<

I see no reason to be a smart ass here. I already said I was busy today and
wanted to get to the root of why there was a hitler thread on the forum. In-
stead I get instant karma godwin and more unanswered emails.

On edit I think it's a little dismissive on your part to give me an answer
like "read first, post later" too. I'm suppose to read the entire forum and know
what threads refer to other threads and then be able to decode cryptic an-
swers as clues to these referenced threads? On a work day?

I realize Willet's your boy, but c'mon ....

Edgy DC
Jun 27 2005 10:32 PM

Well, the "Instant Karma" was a direct response to WP.

I thought I answered any e-mails.

I think WP can answer more for the nature of this thread. But he seemed to direct it at me. I have a thread below, which speaks of Godwin's Law.

The idea was the notion that, in debate -- particularly online debate -- Nazi comparisons are made much too lightly. While agreeing with that notion, I also had to acknowledge that I had played that card in debate. I tend to answer "What's wrong with Steinbrenner? The guy wants to win, that's all."

with

"Who doesn't want to win? Hitler wanted to win. Wanting to win is hardly a virtue in itself."

So I suggested an adoption of the noted tradition that whenever Godwin's Law comes into play, a thread ends, making the person who makes the Nazi analogy the loser.

WP, and again he can speak for himelf better here, seemingly started this thread clearly not as a Nazi humor thread, but as an Edgy humor thread, by starting a thread that triggered the rule instantaneously.

I certainly didn't mean to be obscure, nor (speaking again for myself), invoke Nazism lightly. Quite the opposite.

Where and how control or my intent was lost and miscontrued, I don't know. But I certainly didn't mean to be a smart ass. My initial response was an acknowledgment of the joke which appeared to be on me.

It was funny. It is funny.

Nazis are/were not funny and neither was their boss but Edgy and Willet's threads are.

This wasn't directed at you either, but at MFS62, who was responding to a question that had long been cleared up. Nonetheless, I shouldn't use the imperative tense. Very sorry.

When I got to this thread, many of the links and things dealing with the original story had been deleted or modified. So I was just responding that I didn't think this was a funny topic. Do you think Nazis were funny? Then maybe you didn't grow up in a neighborhood where people had numbers tattooed on their arms.

Please forgive me in that I don't rush to read everything as soon as its posted here and respond immediately. I can only read what is available at the point in time I'm reading it.

There is at times copious quantities of caca posted on this board. Why do you choose to single out my meager two or three line post to make a point about posting less?

Darwin was right.

Mel Brooks certainly thought that being able to make fun of Hitler was an empowering strategy.

Edgy DC
Jun 28 2005 09:43 AM

This grows more ridiculous:

]When I got to this thread, many of the links and things dealing with the original story had been deleted or modified.

As far as I know nothing at all was deleted. Does anybody else know of other things deleted?

]So I was just responding that I didn't think this was a funny topic. Do you think Nazis were funny? Then maybe you didn't grow up in a neighborhood where people had numbers tattooed on their arms.

This is particularly ridiculous. Is there anything at all to suggest I think this way before I get grilled?

]Please forgive me in that I don't rush to read everything as soon as its posted here and respond immediately. I can only read what is available at the point in time I'm reading it.

I do not need or deserve sarcasm. Nothing was deleted. You missed a joke. KC missed a joke. It wasn't my joke, but a joke at my expense. Apparently not a winning one, but so what.

I'm not asking you to rush to read anything. But you're deliberately taking insult at something you clearly don't understand. Had you read more, you'd probably still not understand, as so much of this misunderstanding remains obscure. But you'd realize, I assure you, there was no insult intended, nor attempt to make light of Nazism.

]There is at times copious quantities of caca posted on this board. Why do you choose to single out my meager two or three line post to make a point about posting less?

I didn't say to post less.

About what?

ScarletKnight41

]As far as I know nothing at all was deleted. Does anybody else know of other things deleted?

Here's where that confusion was - because there were two threads involved, but those of us skimming things didn't realize that we were reading the second thread, we remembered certain things having been said that weren't in the thread, so it seemed as if they had been deleted.

My personal theory was that someone posted something, and upon reflection decided that he/she looked like an assclown, so that poster deleted the post, and that by deleting the post he/she also wound up deleting the subsequent posts in the thread.

By this point, I think that most people realize that we've succeeded in creating much ado over nothing.

Hitler would have nuked this thread ages ago ;)

Jun 28 2005 09:58 AM

Oh sure, after you get the last word in.

Edgy DC
Jun 28 2005 10:03 AM

By the way, I agree.

The notion of Godwin's law is that a thread should end upon an invocation of the Nazis or Hitler. Willets tried to make a thread that would be instantly over under those circumstances. Let's let that happen.

Anybody have any non-Hiter clarifications they need to make regarading what anybody else is talking about, please start another thread.
