Occurs to me that if the Mets Network debuts as advertised next year, the station will need appoximately 21 hours a day of non-live-game programming for 162 days of the year, and 24 hours a day for the other 203 days of the year. That's more than 8,000 hours of programming. Now, I don't much about how to make TV but that sounds like a lot of work. Before these guys buy up the rights for another 10 seasons of Fran Healey's "Halls of Fame" we need a solution. That solution is obvious. We have to conceive a Mets-related television program that can be made quickly and cheaply. Suggestions?

I suppose Mets TV would likely look alot like the YES Network, lots of features about Mets palyers form ther past, classic Mets games run all day, not sure if Fran Healy would figure, I read before that Fran is a Dolan fave and not a Wilpon fave. I say they should have a Reality type show where Spring Training invitees live together in Port St. Lucie and we can watch as they try to make the team and head North, say about 16 players, a Real World MLB style...

Joe and Sid have been campaigning to have their midday show simulcasted on the network just like Mike and the Mad Dog have the YES simulcast.

Now you're getting it. Joe & Sid can bite me. Their show is awful, and adding it to the lineup would only underscore the lack of any real imagination & investment for this thing. But considering we haven't heard a word about this channel, from the name to any programming except, we presume, a certain number of Met games, I'm afraid they're going to take the Yes route and basically, suck but for the games if you happen to be into them. This is an opportunity. I'm thinking a Mystery Science Theater ripoff where steely but witty Met fans are forced to sit through replays of old games that turned out badly. An offseason series which replays an entire season game-by-game would be cool. Tuesdays: 1984. Wednesdays: 1967, etc etc. Edgy's indy league reality show has some promise. Anything but Fran Healey's Mets Hot Stove Report has to be an improvement.

OOH! I love the MST3K idea. I'm not a fan of the show, but I love the concept. Actually, doesn't ESPN Classic air something like that right now? It can be a spinoff of that.

The bigger question is winter-time programming. The YES Network has the Nets...obviously the Mets network can't get the Knicks. How do they fill this void?

Arizona Fall League. Winter Ball. Know Your Prospects - Getting Down With The Kids On The Farm. Remember ABC's Wide World of Sports, where each week they would feature something different? Ski Jumping. Curling. Luge. Etc. Bring that back - let's make it cool to learn about other sports again.

I'm picturing a Keith Olberman/Tucker Carlson kind of format, where there's a rotating group of four or five of us doing 60-second discussions on a series of topics. The list of topics would be stacked on the side of the screen, and as they pop to the top the group would have a free-wheeling irreverent discussion. For example, we'd talk about Beltran's mole for about 60 seconds, then discuss whether the Mets should have traded Piazza after the 2001 season, then why Bruce Boisclair is fondly remembered, then a look at Mets whose last names can be scrambled to form palindromes.

I don't like those. Too bite-y. Too self-consciously clever. Too scripted. Too selectively informed. Irreverence works best when it's applied judiciously. Like reverence. I'm in the gym watching Tony Kornheiser trying to work his standup routine on me, and I get angry. It has the same negative cultural impact as late-night monologues, building a false consensus on public issues small and large based on little or no information -- just enough information to get a lame punchline out.

How about a show called "Meet the Mets". Follow a Met throughout a typical day from cereal with the kids, to batting practice, etc. Interview his family, his friends...it would be light-hearted, and focus more on the individual than the player. I think it would be a great way to get fans to connect with their team. We could also do some trivia-type game show.

I guess that means the Islanders. I started this thread fully expecting Frayed Knot's response and in order to compete with it I began thinking of a way to score those same points using retro shows (Three's Company: Bud Harrelson hosts a talk show, etc.). But really, some *threads* here could be a show: "Met Fact & Opinion" & "Calling All Colliers" to name two. I'm tellin ya.
