The notorious thing about black chows is that it's really hard to capture their features on film. We have dozens of pictures that say, "There's Edgy, there's Cha, and there's the inky darkness that hovers around them at all times. Thanks, both. Chows aren't famed for their tolerance of home invasions. Rather the opposite largely. But time and our insistence slowly taught her to accept our friends. Truly a remarkable dog. I'll spare you any long biographical essays, but she's worthy of a mighty memorial and we're talking to the peeps at Mt. Rushmore tomorrow. She's already given us today's victory.

Thanks to Cooby for the tip, and today's Game Notes confirm it: SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 is DOG DAY AT THE PARK sponsored by Snausages. For the first time, dogs will be allowed to cheer on their favorite team... Dogs and their owners, who both must have Picnic Area tickets, will receive Doggie Bags, including a bandana and Snausages. Dog refreshments will be on hand, and all proceeds are donated to the North Shore Animal League. Peanut is very excited.

Haven't looked through this thread in a while - I was sorry to hear of your dog's demise Edgy - My condolences. I'll reload a picture of Mookie when I get a chance. He was at the vet the other day for kidney stones, poor guy. He was in so much pain that he fainted when he was trying to pee. Can you imagine that? Ever seen a dog faint? I'ts pretty disturbing. $500.00 for a sonogram and some other proceedures, some pain meds, and a prescribed diet later - he seems to be back to his old, spotted self. I keep thinking to myself - does Mookie have a ceiling? I mean what's the most I'd pay a vet for medical care for my dog before I'd go the youth in Asia route? If the vet said that my dog had a condition that if not treated would cause him suffering and death but if treated would allow him to live a normal healthy life but cost me upwards of $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 I'm not sure what I would do. Anybody want to field this one? Edgy did Ursa incur any large medical bills ? Was this a question you wrestled with?

I honestly didn't look. These were terrible end-of-life decisions under any circumstances, so nothing extraordinary was necessary, or even optional. The baby was 15 and a half. Obvious fact one: it's tragic to spend good money on doggie necessities when so much of the world is without basics like food and health care. Obvious fact two: you adopt someone, you have a responsibility to it, dog or no. So if it's life can be realistically saved, you do it. Expensive end-of-life options for animals like hospice care and pain-killing drips aren't availalbe for dogs --- fortunately for me because I'd've paid it --- because it doesn't really help very often. Basically, I say that anything I'm willing to spend on my pets -- food and health care and such -- I should be willing to go double and spend the equal part in donating through a good organization to otherwise deprived humans. That's what we try to do. If I'm unwilling or unable to do that, I reason, I shouldn't be getting involved with a doggie. A suit salesman will tell you that if a suit looks good on you, how much you paid will soon be forgotten. But there's some truth in that. If the dog's life can be meaningfully saved, I'll forget about the price as soon as I have my dog back (and I still want her back). Having lost my dog (as bitchy as she was), no savings of $500 or $5000 is going to comfort me. That's what reasoning I work with. Of course, I don't have any kids to whom my wallet and debt also has to answer. Basically, if a guy offered me $5,000 to allow him to kill my dog, I'd quickly reject it. I don't know why I'd make a different deal with the Grim Reaper. Depends on how much I needed the five Gs, I guess. Next time, I guess I'll investigate pet insurance (the number one advertising sector for Animal Planet!), and I suggest you do also.

Pet insurance isn't cost effective after age 7 - the premiums will kill you (take this from someone who insured a pet for a while).

When my grandson Arick was born, Alberta (Golden retriever - Aussie Shepherd mix), who had always slept in my office, absolutely refused to go there any more. You couldn't shove her into my office. She would bolt down the hall to the baby's room, and sleep by his crib to protect him. This lasted about a year, and then she willingly went back to the office.

Every night, he would run up the stairs and turn right, toward the empty room, and lie down in there, chewing his bone, before running down the hall into our room. But I digress. Fatty the cat is not really fat any more. He's had a lot of health problems over the past year or so -- last night he stayed at the vets at what are Hilton Hotel rates. His sister has never had any health problems but as far as my daughter goes he is the much-favored cat.

Fatty is back, he's ok for now. His breath was godawful til on one of his too-frequent trips to the vet they ended up pulling a bunch of his teeth. His breath stopped stinking and he seemed happier since he wasn't being bothered by toothaches anymore.

This is Gavin, she is about 8 years old. She is named after Gavin Rossdale, of the band Bush, though she is a girl cat, as all calicos are. She is very soft and sweet and pretty, and I wish I weren't allergic to her, so I could pet her more. She always runs to the door when I get home from anywhere, which is a pretty nice thing to come home to. Nah, the "corral" is a neat feature. It's like a favorites list; you can save all the animals you really like. He better be. He had what seems to be a burst abcess on his ear. We've pretty much covered him head to toe, inside and out, with antibiotics. He's not liking us very much, but it seems to have gone down.
