Has anyone ever...

...bought tickets from a scalper? I'm going to Boston this weekend and I've been dying to see a game at Fenway (I've never been). Problem is, the games are sold out. Has anyone ever bought tickets from a scalper? How much should I pay? What should I watch out for?

I did once several years ago outside the Garden for a Rangers game and ended up with duds, first and last time, I even naively complained to a Cop who gave me a lecture.

We've never done it; too risky for my tastes. From what friends have said, it might be good to wait until the first inning or so, when they start to get desperate and will dump them for face value. Either way, Irish's warning is a good one, probably even moreso at Fenway, where tickets are hard to come by, and therefore a lot pricier. Have you tried StubHub? I've never tried that either, but they certainly run a lot of radio ads.

They get three - four times face and Sawx tickets are expensive to begin with. Doesn't mean you won't find some regular guy just wanting to unload a couple of seats for an extra $20 though. It's fun down there on game day/night, I'd just give it a shot and wing it. Worst that can happen is you'll land in one of the many fine establishments and watch the game there.

We have sold Jets tickets through Stub Hub several times, and the deals have worked out smoothly. BTW, don't even think about driving to Fenway. There is no parking. I'm not kidding. And they tow. Take the T to Kenmore Square (Green Line)

Bought tix to the 49er-Cowboy playoff game in '89 (and was in the endzone with "the catch" happening about 50 feet away). Got in after kickoff but ended up spending face value 'cause of the dumping. My neighbor buys from Stub Hub all the time, swears by it.

Yeah, it's a risky trick, but sometimes it's useful to wait until after an event starts and watch the parking lot turn into a buyer's market. Better yet, never give scalpers a red cent.

BTW, even though I'm into seeing as many ballparks as possible, don't expect much from Fenway. Yes, it's historic, but it's also decrepit.

Where else can you still go to pee in a trough? That's not decrepit, that's nostalgic.

Bah on all of youse. Scalp the tickets. I used to do it all the time whenever I went anywhere and didn't have a ducat. Expect to pay more but don't pay more than you want to. Stand firm, the pros NEED to unload their tix, the longer they hang on to them the lower the price goes. If you get lucky you will find John Q. looking to unload a pair for face value or maybe a few bucks more. Despite what Ms. Knight says, Fenway's great. A must experience for any baseball fan. Yes the concourses are dank, narrow, dreary and you might see the occasional rat, but from your narrow, uncomfortable seat, the view of the game is the best in baseball because of where you are. Squint your eyes and it's 1940 all over again. Enjoy and go sawx!

I'll take a standard urinal, thank you very much. I concur with IP/SK's assessment of Fenway. Been there twice; hated it the first time, enjoyed it the second. Make sure your seats face the field.

I bought same day tickets outside Yankee stadium at $5 over face value. That's the most over face I've ever paid. If you wait until just before game time, you'd be amazed hwo rapidly the price drops. The best approach to this is at OPACY. The have a "scalping free zone" at one of the gates where buyers match up with sellers who have extra tickets and you pay face value only. The thing is run by the park staff, and tickets are bought/ sold on a first come/ first sold basis/ Too bad other ballparks don't have something like that. Later

I lived in the Fenway area for three years in the 80s. Believe me, they tow. And the lots are no bargain. Take the T, baby!

In our case, one member of our party is pregnant, so I think we may drive (allowing pick up and drop-off if need be) and suck it up and pay for parking. There is plenty of parking if we are willing to pay I'm assuming... Oh, and the Carrier Dome has troughs, but they are actually very nice troughs.

Fenway has been spiffed up a lot the past few seasons. The concourse has been opened up, rusty posts have been painted over, and generally it's a more amiable experience. There aren't any troughs there anymore either (although there are troughs at Wrigley) and they've actually installed new, large restrooms for women too. The seats are still uncomfortable, Right Field Grandstand still faces the bleachers instead of the field, and your fellow spectators are no longer knowledgable baseball fans, but instead yuppies and suburbanites who are there to see and be seen and will get up and make you get up and then stand in front of you in the aisle EVERY FUCKING HALF-INNING.

No, I have no objection to the King and Queen reproducing - I'm just used to Kase referring to me as Mrs. Fields. Three kids later, I had a knee jerk reaction to the thought of being pregnant again.

Congratulations on the future roster addition, CF. I hope you and the Mrs. have a great trip to Boston. Our family really enjoyed our trip to Fenway a few years ago. The fans were great and we got to see one of those slugfest games where virtually every hitter for both teams was knocking the hell out of the pitches. Even saw 2 grand slams.
