I got fired!

Well, not fired. I got three months notice at work today. If I'm still there on September 30, THEN I'll be fired. I've been actively searching for something else anyway, so this was kind of welcome news. Kind of liberating, actually. I'm currently working on several different things, so I fully expect to resign before then. The job had become miserable. Soul-draining, even, and I don't even believe in souls! I pity the fool who takes a job in the department I'm leaving!

Even so, it's never fun when they tell you to go before you're ready to tell them to fuck off. True dat. I did enjoy the "conversation." They told me they were terminating my position. I simply said, "Okay." They asked if I had any questions. I said, "No." So they never even got to explain their reasons. And the best part is, I didn't have to listen to their reasons.

Best of luck, Yancy. Way to remain cool under fire. The company probably doesn't know what to think when they tell you that they are going to terminate your position and you shrug it off with a calm reply of like it's no big deal. Must have messed with their minds. I hope you find a great position so that you can leave that lame duck position as quickly as possible.

I might. It's a little further than I want to drive, but not so far that I'd rule it out. I do have a connection or two at a company just outside of Trenton that may be hiring. If some of my closer options don't come through, that one may move up on my list.

I got laid off from a soul-draining job once. Other than it happening about 5 minutes before 9/11 (thereby f-ing up the job market for too long) it was one of the best days of my life. It was like getting out of jail. Congratulations! A handy piece of advice: Severance is negotiable! If they say X, you say X^3, then back up your claim with trumped-up statistics from the job market. Then settle for X^2. Good luck!

That's a good way to describe it. My specialty for the last seven years has been PeopleSoft, but I've done a variety of stuff.

Someone I work with's husband does a lot of Oracle stuff from home now. He bounced around for awhile, even with Oracle I think, and then starting picking up outsourced projects from companies and loves being able to work when he wants.

I'd enjoy that too. I've heard from a few who have done that kind of thing, and the main problem is collecting the money you've earned. One guy I know lost out on $20,000.

Getting stiffed five figures is something I hadn't even thought of. Yeah, when you work on your own there's a lot more hats to wear. The thought of the freedom is appealing but I don't think I could work from home. I'm too easily distracted and would miss the office even though the women here drive me nuts most days.

Thanks, everyone. I wish I had July off! Remember, I'm still employed by the soul-drainers until September 30, or until I resign, or until they decide "my duties have been completed," whichever comes first. I think the resign part will, but we'll see.

Well, the MOFO lead to Kase asking me to write to kcmets.com, which wound up leading to a gig at Mets Inside Pitch for a time. So yes, there are ways for this hobby to pay dividends.

I mentioned that my son's LL coach is the CEO of MLB Advanced Media which is the parent of mlb.com. I became very friendly with him and If any of you come up with something you think might appeal to the guy, I'd be happy to make an introduction. Even though I have no idea who anybody really is.

Getting out of bad jobs can be quite liberating. Best of luck to you Yance, I'm sure you'll land on your feet. It's good to hear you were thinking of leaving anyway...think of the severance as getting paid to do something you were willing to do for nothing.

Yancy, my husband lost his job when Corning shut down the local plant and offices and put 1200 people out of work. This happened less than a year after our daughter's bike accident, and I can honestly say that without his severance pay we would not have been able to pay her medical expenses, which have reached five figures (that's out of pocket) and are still not done. So I guess every cloud has a silver lining. Tough luck for the other 1199 people though...

Best of everytingg, Yancy. Same thing happened to me around 9/11. Finding something was very difficult. Took a while, but landed on my feet again. We're holding a place here for good news. Later

Thanks. I think I'll be all right. There's a company today that's hot to hire me, but I don't think I want to go there. Actually, I told them (through the recruiter who's trying to place me there) that I wanted to withdraw, but they're still after me. Hopefully it won't be too long before somebody more appealing falls in love with me.
