metirish Apr 21 2006 09:40 PM |
Yeah get online now, it'll be hard to top last nights game but any win will do, it will be interesting to see how Bannister is tonight...
Nymr83 Apr 21 2006 09:41 PM |
I was at his last start and he was pulling rabbits out of his hat for 5 innings, if he allows that many baserunners tonight he won't be so lucky again.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 21 2006 09:50 PM |
I'll try and be around. LGM, YGB, bbb, yyy
metirish Apr 21 2006 09:57 PM |
Like us Keith is very interested to see what Bannister has tonight....
TransMonk Apr 21 2006 09:58 PM |
Should be a telling start for Bannister. No more cold weather excuses. If he throws strikes he should be fine.
Centerfield Apr 21 2006 10:05 PM |
Any update on Beltran?
TransMonk Apr 21 2006 10:12 PM |
Doctors are looking at the MRI as we post. Gary says they should have an uodate during the game.

On the pre-game Chris Cotter said Beltran was day to day, meaning they no squat till the doctors phone Gary and Keith in the booth.

Poor guys, Gay-Rod has been very hard on himself lately, taking the blame for the MFYs so so start, he's such a leader, time Torre sat Matsui for a game.

Rockin' Doc Apr 21 2006 10:43 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Apr 21 2006 10:44 PM |
That was a promising start to an inning that you could see wasn't likely to lead to much. Once Matsui flied out, it was up to Chavez and Bannister to drive in the the runs. I figured the odds were against that happening. I just wish we could have at least cleared the pitchers spot, but the GIDP killed that.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 21 2006 10:43 PM |
Before Matsui whiffed w/ the bases loaded, Gayrod whiffed with 2 on.
Rockin' Doc Apr 21 2006 10:46 PM |
If only Captain Intangibles had also struck out with runners in scoring position, we might have had an alternate definition of Triple Happiness.

Gwreck, Gary just gave some very interesting info on Brian..including this game and counting his last start Brian has pitched 9 innings and thrown 184 pitches yet only gave up one run while stranding 17 on base....that's just nuts..
Gwreck Apr 21 2006 11:31 PM |
Brian Bannister...graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Al Leiter school of pitching, circa 2003-2004.

Gwreck Apr 21 2006 11:33 PM |
So much for stealing off Piazza....Lo Duca's been even worse.
Nymr83 Apr 21 2006 11:33 PM |
Bannister just walked his 5th batter of this game, 2-on, 0-out for Mike Piazza.
metirish Apr 21 2006 11:34 PM |
Yeah really, Keith mentioned how many walks were in that 9 innings, I forget what the count was though, but it was a lot.

95 pitches, Oliver warming up. I think Bannister either gets out of the inning...or gets taken out.
metirish Apr 21 2006 11:43 PM |
This guy is just freaky....another big out pitch.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 21 2006 11:43 PM |
If I were a Padres fan I'd have killed myself four or five times tonight already.
Rockin' Doc Apr 21 2006 11:44 PM |
The strange thing is that last season , both at Binghamton and Norfolk, Bannister displayed great contol. His walks per nine innings were low and his K's/wlaks was good as well. Maybe he's afraid to challenge the ML hitters (as he K's Castillo to end the inning).
Nymr83 Apr 21 2006 11:47 PM |
Harry Houdini promised his fans that he'd return from the other side one day, what he didn't say is that he'd be named Brian Bannister... it's amazing how this guy gets into and out of trouble.

9 in a row retired by Williams. Offense, paging offense, please pick up the nearest red courtesy phone...
Hillbilly Apr 21 2006 11:51 PM |
No win for the BB tonight.
Rockin' Doc Apr 21 2006 11:52 PM |
In his 8 starts for the Tides last season, Bannister compiled a 4-1 record with a 3.18 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. He ammassed 48 K's against only 13 walks in his 48.1 innings of work.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 21 2006 11:53 PM |
I think he's just mechanically a wreck right now and unbelieveably fortunate. Meantime, our offense is dead for the 4th straight game. Take away the big 8th last night, and we've scored 4 runs on 15 hits in the last 31 innings.
Gwreck Apr 21 2006 11:53 PM |
Howie Rose was speculating that he can't throw his curveball for strikes, and if he gets control of it he'd be a lot better pitcher.
Nymr83 Apr 21 2006 11:55 PM |
2 on for Oliver, can he pull a Bannister?
metirish Apr 21 2006 11:57 PM |

2 quick outs for Heilman, too bad he cant pitch another inning...

Wright's BA has dropped about 150 points the last week or so. Beltran's hammy, sure. Reyes isn't right either. But the offense seemed to tank when David did.

HillBilly is now "Leroy Stanton", which i think would be a great name for a hollywood hillbilly.

you can't. if he gets caught you lose franco and then Feliciano would lead off the next inning unless you pulled him after 1 (which you might not want to do if he gets a quick inning.)

and you know Willie didnt want to go to him earlier-what with him bein on a tad of an upswing after that awful start. but now would be a could time for him to get in and do it and earn the cheers of the fans when he returns to Shea. Reyes in every inning. i like. Tho 0 for 6 kinda hurts

C'mon Carlos, let's get one across here.

Johnny Dickshot Apr 22 2006 01:44 AM |
Twelve innings, we score 1 run, and you guys are worried about the bullpen.

Gwreck Apr 22 2006 01:45 AM |
Why not? The bullpen is the only thing keeping us in this game.... :)

what? me worry?
Nymr83 Apr 22 2006 01:46 AM |
I'm not worried about the bullpen in the long-run, i have a reasonable amount of trust in 3 guys (Wagner, Sanchez, and Heilman) and I'm not adverse to 3 more (Oliver, Bradford, and Feliciano.) thats ALOT better than i feel about the pen most years.
Gwreck Apr 22 2006 01:50 AM |
Is it still a golden sombrero if it takes 13 innings to happen?
Nymr83 Apr 22 2006 01:50 AM |
in the preseason predictions thread i had 4:23 for the longest game of the year, that would mean a 2:28 AM ending tonight, right?

Nymr83 Apr 22 2006 01:50 AM |

i always thought it needed to be all your ABs for the day but i guess not. Bradford has 3 k's.

ahhh, sure. *Z swigs down another bud ice.
Gwreck Apr 22 2006 01:52 AM |
Hmm, not sure. WTF is the etymology of "golden sombrero" anyway?
Johnny Dickshot Apr 22 2006 01:52 AM |
I think the pitchers have pretty much done all they can to deserve a win tonight and though you can dicker with WWSB's management of it, the fact is the bullpen has thrown 8 scoreless innings on the road as I type, and there's games to win tomorrow nite and Sunday too. At some point you have to have faith that the O gives you a lead to protect, or you take your chances with the Julios and Zambranos. You can't have both.
Nymr83 Apr 22 2006 01:53 AM |
Bradford k's the side!!!!

abogdan Apr 22 2006 07:34 AM |
How do you use a pitcher for only two batters in the 12th? If you're going to use Bradford, you have to bring him in to start that inning. Why waste a lefty on Eric Young and Adrian Gonzalez when the only hitter in that lineup you should be scared of - Brian Giles - is a lefty?
TransMonk Apr 22 2006 08:06 AM |
I fell asleep at the comp during the 12th.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 22 2006 11:26 AM |
I can't believe there's more harping on bullpen usage when it gave you 8 scoreless innings on the road. When should Willie plan for the Mets to have given them a lead? The 36th inning?
Nymr83 Apr 22 2006 11:39 AM |
the point is that once you're past the 8th inning and tied you need to not use any pitchers for less than a full inning or two. the bullpen did perform well but Willie didn't.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 22 2006 11:52 AM |
I completely disagree. You play for the win on the road, and when you're in xtras, that means every moment of the game.
Bret Sabermetric Apr 22 2006 12:09 PM |
But in the larger sense shouldn't your overwhelming principle be "I have a finite number of innings I can get out of my pen, and a theoretically infinite number of innings I can work them in, so using a man for far fewer innings than he's capable of pitching tonight gets me into deep doo-doo eventually"?
Johnny Dickshot Apr 22 2006 12:16 PM |
Well, we are talking about this game, and nymr, zvon and abogdan are basically sore because Willie didn't try and lose it sooner than he did. Why not use Julio in the 9th if that's the attitude? In a general sense I think WWSB has been OK with his his use this year (amazing how better pitchers make you look like a better manager).
Bret Sabermetric Apr 22 2006 12:28 PM |
I'd say better pitching, not necessarily better pitchers. The jury's still out on the Mets maintaining a 3.08 ERA over the season.
abogdan Apr 22 2006 01:21 PM |
I have no idea what you're talking about. Randolph's bullpen usage last night decreased the Mets' chances of winning the game. He was left with the options of leaving in a tired Chad Bradford to pitch to lefty Brian Giles with the winning run on base, or bringing in Jorge Julio, who shouldn't be brought into a tie game until it gets to the 20th inning. Randolph should have used his best available reliever, Bradford, to start the 12th. Three of the next four hitters were right handed. Had he done that, Randolph would have had the added option of going to Feliciano against Giles the next inning.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 22 2006 04:52 PM |
And when Gonzalez ends the game with a home run in the 12th you expect Willie to say, "Well, I know Bradford's splits vs. lefties are terrible, but I put him in there because I was expecting us not to score for two more innings even though the top of the order was due up so I could use my specialist on Brian Giles in the 14th."
