It's too late for the KTE thread now. I will turn in my assignment prior to tomorrow's game.

That's ok, Doc.
For now, your thread title will suffice.

The Mets are 8-2 playing with lots of confidence (sorry Fran fans), about open up a three game set with the Braves at home with Pedro on the mound. It’s hard not to be excited about this series and this start by the Mets.

Article in which the Braves make excuses for Mets hot start and focus on the past 14 seasons instead of the upcoming series. Todd Pratt runs his mouth, and Jeff Francoeur finds time to make comments after pulling his head above the Mendoza line this weekend.

Should be a fun series.

Braves-Mets Preview

A team might not be able to win a division title in April, but that doesn't mean the New York Mets can't send a message to their NL East rivals.

Pedro Martinez seeks his 200th career win and the Mets look to extend the best start in their history when they open a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Monday at Shea Stadium.

After taking two of three games from the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend, the Mets are 9-2 for the first time in franchise history. They also have won their first four series of the season for the first time ever.

It will all matter little, though, if New York can't finish ahead of Atlanta (6-7) come season's end. That has not happened since the Braves joined the NL East in 1994, and Atlanta has won a major league-record 14 consecutive division crowns in all.

''They're the division champions,'' Mets manager Willie Randolph said. ''Those are the guys we've got to go through to be where we want to be.

''We feel good going into the series. We want to feel good going out.''

Martinez looks to open a season 3-0 for the first time since 2002, when he started 7-0 for Boston and did not suffer his first loss until June 8.

With a win Monday, Martinez would become the seventh active pitcher with 200 victories. His 84 losses would also be the fewest all-time for any pitcher with at least 200 wins.

Martinez has pitched well in his career versus the Braves, posting a 3.05 ERA in 24 appearances, but has only an 8-8 record to show for it. Atlanta is one of only four teams against which Martinez does not own a winning lifetime mark.

The Mets put on an offensive show in Sunday's 9-3 victory over Milwaukee, led by Xavier Nady going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs. The first four hitters in Sunday's New York lineup - Jose Reyes, Paul Lo Duca, Carlos Delgado and David Wright - combined to go 6-for-15 with six runs scored and four driven in.

All four are batting .300 or higher for the season. Wright's 2-for-4 effort increased his league-leading average to .429.

Center fielder Carlos Beltran hopes to return to action after missing Sunday's contest with a tight right hamstring. Endy Chavez replaced him, going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

The Braves missed a chance to register their first series sweep of the season on Sunday, losing 4-3 to San Diego to finish a six-game homestand with a 3-3 record. Atlanta took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but the bullpen let it slip away by giving up three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth.

Andruw Jones went 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season for the Braves. Jones has five multihit efforts in 13 games.

Starter Jorge Sosa will try to avoid matching his loss total from all of 2005, when he went 13-3. The right-hander lasted a total of just 6 1-3 innings in his first two starts while allowing 10 runs and a .367 opponent batting average.

Sosa pitched four innings in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to Philadelphia as he gave up four runs, four hits and three walks.

''He threw the ball OK,'' Braves catcher Brian McCann said. ''In the second inning, he wasn't hitting his locations like he wanted to. But he should be fine.''

The Braves went 13-6 against the Mets in 2005, and have won the season series eight straight times.

I'm playing hooky on Wednesday to go to the day game against the Braves with one of my best buddies who has the unfortunate ailment of lifelong Braves fandom. We did the same thing last year - a Wednesday afternoon game against the Braves in April - and it was a lot of fun except that Tom Glavine got totally pasted by his ex-teammates. Glavine goes again this Wednesday afternoon. Unlike others here, I'm not sold on Glavine's good second-half and good starts against bottomfeeders this year as making up for his 21/2 years of sucking BHMC. I think the Wednesday game will be a test for Glavine. If he loses and loses bad as he's prone to do against the Braves, it will be pretty evident his recent success is a fluke and he's not the type of pitcher the Mets need if they wish to play postseason ball this season. If he can pitch like he did against Milwaukee though, then maybe, just maybe, I might be convinced otherwise.

Sorry for the tardiness of this thread KTE thread. Due to computer problems at home, I have had to rewrite and post this from my office. Will add in the final details later.

The perennial NL East champion Braves roll into Shea for a date with the red hot Mets. The Mets own the best record in baseball and are looking to send a message to the Braves and their fans that they are for real. The Braves starting pitching has been horrendous this season, while the Mets rotation has been better than expected so far. Despite early injuries to third baseman Chipper Jones and shortstop Edgar Renteria, the Braves offense has been quite productive. The Mets offense has been hitting on most cylinders. Cliff Floyd is struggling, but should regain the form that has made him a crowd favorite at Shea. Anderson Hernandez seems to be completely overmatched by major league pitching. As hard as it is to imagine, he has played bad enough to have many of the Mets faithful hoping for the return of Kaz Matsui.

Probable Pitching Matchups
Monday, 4/17/06 @ 7:10 PM - Righthander Jorge Sosa (0-2) will take the mound against the Mets ace, Pedro Martinez (2-0). The Mets right hander is seeking the 200th victory of his illustrious career. Sosa has struggled, as have most of the Atlanta rotation. Sosa is sporting an 11.37 ERA for the season and has averaged only 5.1 innings per start. Pedro has done enough to win, but hasn't been the dominant starter we have come to rely on. Have to like this match up for the Mets.

Tuesday, 4/18/06 @ 7:10 PM - The Braves will send righthander Kyle Davies (0-1) to the mound at Shea. The Mets will counter with the enigmatic Victor Zambrano (1-0). Sporting an ERA of 8.38, Davies is the hottest Braves starter that the Mets will face in the series. He gave up 9 hits and 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings during his last start against the Phillies. Zambrano, has pretty impressive stuff, but has never found a way to successfully harness it to his benefit. This should be an offensive game that goes to the bullpens early.

Wednesday, 4/19/06 @ 1:10 PM - Afternoon getaway game that will see righthander Tim Hudson (0-1) face off against the cagey lefty, Tom Glavine (2-0). You may have noticed that none of the Braves starters have collected a victory yet. Atlanta ace, John Smoltz succeeded at earning a victory in his last start in San Diego, but the rest of the rotation is collectively 0 for 2006. The talented Hudson has struggled in his 3 starts. He is carrying a 9.20 ERA and has amassed only 14.2 innings of work. Glavine has pitched beautifully this year. He has pitched 6 innings in each of his 3 starts and has a 1.50 ERA. Hers's hoping that Hudson doesn't find himself anytime soon. This game has the potential to turn into a pitcher's duel.

The bullpens will likely play a major role in this series since none of the starters are pitching deep into the games. Here are the guys that could decide the outcome of the games.
