Dave Magadan question

Check out this admittedly tiny photo of Dave Magadan:

Note that he appears to have a left earflap. But Mags was strictly a left-handed hitter, which means he'd normally have a right earflap. So that means either (a) he was hitting right-handed, or (b) he was wearing a double-earflap helmet.

I'm certain he never hit right-handed, so I think we can dismiss that possibility straight away. I'm more interested in the possibility that he was wearing a double-flap helmet. I don't remember him ever doing this, and he's wearing a single-flap helmet in every other photo of him that I can find.

So my question is: Does anyone remember him wearing a double-flap helmet, and/or photographic evidence of same?

My guess is that the photo came from shortly after he came up, and the equipment manager provide him with a generic double flap helmet that fit. Despite being a September callup, he had a card rushed into production, to meet the demands of playing for a championship team.

Magadan always wore the double ear-flap helmets.
"I'm more aerodynamic that way" was his explanation.

Just imagine how slow he would have been without it!
